It's Not Rocket Science

As far as I am concerned the "right" way to do something quilt related is whatever way works for you!
Machine quilting is somewhat tedious, especially when I'm doing cross hatching. It is really effective on some quilts but really boring! My patches are 2" finished and that was just a bit too big not to mark for quilting. I basted my quilt first and mark a little as I quilt. I really cannot imagine marking a whole quilt top first.

Not all my patches are perfect, but I'm pretty sure I've never made a perfect quilt. (Or even near perfect!)

I just put my 24" ruler down and start marking across the squares. I do not necessarily go in any orderly fashion. Mark a few lines, sew a few lines...

Hmmm, some of those markings don't look very square. Once I get it quilted nobody will be able to tell.

The cross hatching in this quilt was tedious, but easy. The squares finished at 1" so no marking!

I do recommend giving yourself more than a 1/2" of backing and batting! I was cutting this a bit too close for comfort.

  1. I love this post, Lori. I'm wanting to do some crosshatching. I've never done it and wondered how to get started.

  2. I'm working on the same thing right now. It really is pretty boring.

  3. "Quilting is not rocket science" is my favorite thing to tell new quilters. You will find no "quilt police" at my house!

Cross-hatching is a very effective way to quilt some quilts.
