Gettin' Ready for the Holidays

I was inspired by Virginia Cole at Galloping Pony Studio for this top piece. As usual, mine is humble, but I'm positive my recipient will enjoy it anyway.

When I first laid out the striped fabric on this quilt top I liked the way the stripes ran lengthwise with the quilt. I started looking around online at striped borders and realized very few put them on this way, so I thought I would run the stripes away from the center of the quilt. Then I went and looked at a few older quilts and the fabric ran either way. Brandie commented that she liked it the way it was laid out and that was my first confirmation that maybe I would attach the border the way I wanted to attach it and not the way it was "normally" done.

Anyway, I did a quick mock up in EQ and sent the photo off to a few close friends for a vote. Hands down was lengthwise. (click on photo for a larger view)

That seemed like a long explanation....the point being, go with what will make you happy.

There is still time to get your name in the pot for the patriotic panels. I'll draw tomorrow at noon PST.

I may have to borrow your idea with the little quilts and buttons framed for some Christmas gifts. Very cool!!!

  3. I visit Galloping Pony Studio blog and find her pieces very interesting. I don't think yours is "humble" at all. You did a very nice job.

I like the way your stripe border looks. Whatever makes you happy is the way it should be.

  4. That framed piece is really great. Hope you don't mind if I "borrow" the idea. I've got a couple frames that don't fit anything I've made, so I can make something to fit the frame. And I like the way your laid the stipes in this. It's wonderful.

  5. I must admit to thinking 'what stripes' but upon enlargement I see them behind the flowers. While I think vertical stripes are more pleasing to the eye - it's your quilt and you get to do whatever you want. I love using stripes to add movement and interest - and I love striped binding! I really enjoy your blog but just wish I had more time to visit...

  6. PS I love the framed piece - so many possibilities. I've seen vintage blocks framed, but never thought frame one I've made - although that lace certainly looks vintage...

  7. I can't believe it, I just used that same fabric, for borders and sashing for a strippy quilt that I was sewing. Great use of fabric in your project, but who can go wrong with beautiful fabric.
