Little Quilts and a Giveaway!!

I've been getting my patriotic decorating done this week and was surprised to find I didn't have a little quilt to display. As long as I was making one I thought I might as well make two and give one away in honor of Independence Day. I promise I'll have it done before I send it to its new home.

My love for little quilts started with this book. Mine is falling apart as I think I have made almost every quilt in here over the years....more than once. For a new quilter I could find a little project that I could actually finish. I made many for little gifts and most of the recipients loved their little quilts.

This was one of the first ones I made and the only one I have at home. It's faded and worn and has some funny little calico fabrics but I still like it.

This book is one of my latest purchases. I loved it and this many years later I'm still enamoured by little quilts!! The book talks about doll quilts made for children, and doll quilts made by children. There are many wonderful photos of children and their dolls. I highly recommend this book if you love doll quilts!!

Here's a couple of teaser pages.

So, if you'd like your very own patriotic Little Quilt leave a comment and I'll draw a winner next week. Now, I better go get some binding sewn!!

  10. I love both of those books. The Little Quilts is one of my first quilt book purchases. I honestly think I like the doll quilt book better but it's a close call. I've made several of the quilts shown (from the pictures. For those who don't have it, there are no instructions). Both books are wonderful!!!

  13. I love little quilts & I have been in many swaps on-line. The funny thing is -- I don't have any little quilts that I have made for myself!!

So, I would love to add another little quilt to my collection & thought I better not end my "streak" by making on for myself.

    Your quilts are beautiful.

  22. After quilting for a few years now - I really appreciate the little quilts. Coming from a rural background where quilting was utilitarian, lap and wall hangings seemed unnecessary at first. Now that my quilt life has evolved, I LOVE these small projects for the instant gratification but also for the opportunity to try something new, including free motion quilting, on a small scale.

  26. That was my first one, too and first quilt out of it. It's very faded and I actually just replaced it with another quilt. I still love that pattern, though. I miss July 4th celebrations... Canada Day just isn't the same. :-(

  27. Oh, what a darling 4th of July quilt. I'm starting to make small quilts for the reasons you laid out....you can make & complete them for gifts in a reasonable amount of time :)

  29. those are some cute little patriotic quilts Lori but i would feel greedy if you put me into the drawing this time. ;-) so i'll wish everyone else the best of luck.

yes, the Little Quilts books were some of my first and i have made and continue to make quilts out of my well worn/loved copies with always happy results. i actually have a copy of a book that they put out that was really more about decorating with the little quilts than it was about making them called Living With Little Quilts. that one is close to losing some pages i've enjoyed it so much . . . and one can really see how influenced i've been by it when walking through my house as i have small quilts tucked everywhere and move them around constantly according to season, holiday, whim, etc. such a happy preoccupation isn't it~!?!~

Childhood Treasures is a great book too and i particularly like the quilts shown that are made BY children~!!~ one can only imagine the individual stories behind the making and playing with of those sweet comforts~!!~ in fact, i'm going to get that one out and have a tall glass of ice tea and a long sit in the shade . . .

    :-)

  41. Hi Lori - this is NO kidding - that same exact book, "Little Quilts" is what made me fall in love with little/small quilts. I also have their books, "CELEBRATE with Little Quilts" and PATRIOTIC Little Quilts". I always thought it'd be so much fun to be able to visit their shop one day in Atlanta "IF" we were ever in that area. BTW - I also have their small book called "Living with Little Quilts".........I LOVE the pics in all their books.

  43. I started working on a "little" quilt yesterday. Haven't made one in ages so it is time. Good idea to make a patriotic one.

  44. I also own that book and sadly I haven't made a thing from it yet! I just love 'looking' in books, mags and the internet at lovely works, but seem to fail to make anything for myself. I get the baby quilts done when there is a deadline and that is about it. I think I need the sewing room moved to the main floor and I'd do more? Enter me for that charming little quiltlette.

  45. Oh I just love your little Americana quilts. You always make the cutiest things.

  46. I love Little Quilts...but I am ashamed to say I have not made any projects out of it....yet....
I need to pull out my patriotic decorations this weekend...I won't be spending my 4th in a very pleasant way, but that is no reason my family can't them!

  53. The Little Quilts book is also a favorite of mine...made the very quilt you show as a gift for my neighbor a while back. Also was able to visit the doll quilt & furniture collection of Mary Ghormley when it was on exhibit at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln Quilt Study Center a number of years ago. The dearest display I have ever seen so Childhood Treasures is another love!

  60. I'm slowly accumulating a group of books for making small quilts. None of them are in danger of losing pages due to overuse--yet--but I hope to change that in the next year or so.
I'd be honored to own a little patriotic quilt you've made, if I'm the lucky winner.
    Happy summer, Lori.

  61. You have inspired me to try and make an Australia Day quilt.
We tend not to have as much patriotic ethos as your country does, but scratch and Aussie and it is there...maybe we are too laid back about it all....
But you have got me thinking and I love little quilts and since I am stuck in the sickly miseries and have not sewn for a month a small quilt might start me off.....but then so would finishing anything on the cutting table.
Funny how we lose our way at times.
