Beyond The Cherry Tree BOM

I think I have only posted 1 block of this quilt. Sharon at Grass Roots Quilt Studio has started a blog for those who are making this. Click on the link to the right if you want to take a look.

When I posted my block photos there I mentioned that each block alone isn't particularly beautiful, but all together it will be a lovely, funky quilt.

Sharon also was thinking ahead to the many berries we will need for the border. Not too long ago I picked up a Sizzix cutter for making wool pennies. But I've just found an additional use for it!! Woo-hoo!!
Here's a few berries I have started. You can see the ones with the sloppy seam allowance are my scissor cuts.
Here's the cutter and circle die.

I folded over a small piece of index card to fit the circle I want my berries to be.

Four perfect circles!
Then I folded over a piece of fabric and set it on the size circle I need.

Perfect! All to do now it baste around them and tie them off.

And it cuts wool for penny rugs too!!

  1. How funny! I use my scrapbooking equipment to make my circle templates as well. Love the blocks. I am anxious to see what they turn out to be.

I have been looking at the sizzix cutters, they have ones for cutting fabric now and a new one called the vagabond, it looks like a suitcase and it is electric.

  7. Hi Lori - Tell me more about this cutter. Is it (she asked hopefully) the same as the one for paper??? I just can't justify the expense of that new cutter with all the gadgets but a Sixxix just for circles is different.

I love the blocks you've done - beautiful!!!

  10. Now, I'm tempted! The GO was one of those things that I could live without....I still can but the circles of wool...for a penny rug. I'd like that.

  12. Your blocks are beautiful! I love that there are 3 leaves on one side and 2 on the other - it gives the block personality :0) The antique cherry quilt is so wonderful and yours will be too.

  13. SO COOL. I purchased from that site, she cut 200 for me so they should be in my mail any day. Too bad she wouldn't cut my fabric at the same time, hehehe

  15. I don't have time to work on the Beyond the Cherry Tree blocks at this time but will enjoy the process through you. What sizes can you cut the circles with your cutter?

  16. I may have to look into that Sizzix for my pennies, too. I have the GoCutter but the die for the small circles is only available on the industrial machine. The Sizzix may be the way to go. Thanks!

  17. What would we do without our quilting toys and new tools? You've certainly found the perfect aid for all the circles we need for some projects.
It's a sweet block. I love that bold red fabric.

  24. I'm starting to learn, quilt makers are very clever!

  25. Oh Lori! See, this is exactly the sort of applique I'd like to be able to create when I learn (eventually) this aspect of our "quilting art." There's so much to learn and it looks like much is about sharing tips and being creative with your own ideas re: how to get just the shape you want. Hmmm. You know, I'm going to want Four perfect circles! as well. A goal for future. :)

Warm hugs, *karendianne. who thinks today is a better day than was yesterday.
