Vintage Quilt Tops

I've had these photos downloaded to blogger for awhile and just about forgot about them. Here are two more quilt tops I bought during the Coburg Quilt Show.

This one doesn't look like much...

But it has some awesome fabric in it. I love the wine colored squiggleys the best!!
Here is a terrific string quilt.  It has a huge variety and a wide span of fabric in this one.
Black mourning prints, indigo and shirtings all from about 1900 to a wonderful splashy floral from a bit later.
I love the partial blocks.
There is quite a bit of the bold black and white print throughout this quilt. I wish I could tell what it is supposed to be.

I took this quilt top apart and have these blocks to show for it.  I will probably need to take these apart too and resew them so they have a seam allowance and are all the same size.

  1. Great fabrics in both tops and blocks. The string quilt is especially fun where she used up other blocks. 19th century recycling!

  2. Great finds and they'll make some great quilts.
Can't wait to see them transform in your hands.

  3. I love seeing the older quilts and the seeing what fabrics they used. I saw one once, but it was really beat up, not even worth using as a cutter quilt.

  4. I enjoyed seeing the fabrics you like in the first one. I like the use of that chrome yellow. (is that correct, would you call that chrome yellow?) You're right. The variety of fabrics in the string quilt is great. Gosh it's unreal!!! :) Mourning prints, too. Gosh those are wonderful. I think we need some of those from the Fabric Goddesses to hit the shelves. And Lori, the partial blocks is a new one for me. I've never seen anything like this. How completely fantastic!!! Finally, that green at the end is perfect. What a find this is. It looks like a great quilt. I can't wait to see this one.

  6. Such fun to study the fabrics and try to guess the thinking behind the design of these old quilts. Looking forward to seeing what you do with all of them. Great varied purchases.

I sometimes question whether the bold, bright poison green and chrome yellow and bright red repro fabrics are authentic versions of old ones. Your purchases help prove that yes, people in the past had fabrics that weren't all just brown and black and dingy.

  10. I just love looking at vintage quilts. My love of quilting and quilts began with these kinds of quilts. At one time, I wouldn't even consider looking at stuff like Kaffe Fassett or Amy Butler; now my tastes have room for both the traditional quilts with the vintage look and feel as well as the more modern quilts made with the fresher-looking fabrics.

  13. Lori...You have so much more patience than I do....I love the tops, but they would stay folded on a shelf in my studio...hugged occasionally, but not redone...:)))

  15. I like them all but am always partial to poison green so your blocks are speaking to me. Have fun with those!

  16. I should have known you before I sold all my vintage & antique quilt tops. I sold them very inexpensively.

  20. Love them! Good idea to take apart the blocks and re-sew them. I need to do that with some vintage/antique quilt tops I have.

  21. Thank you for sharing! I really love how the maker incorporated her UFO blocks into the string quilt.
That black print looks Art Deco style to me. I can't make out a pattern either - maybe it's abstract.

  22. Those quilts are fabulous - true classics.

  23. Really love both tops, and the way the quilter improvised on the second one is so great! You are a patient lady to take apart and resew those blocks, but it will be amazing, and I imagine you feel a real connection with the earlier quilter.

  24. the use of blocks and partial blocks in the string quilt makes it particularly appealing~!
wish i could help you on the black and white fabric . . .
    will you be quilting these?

looks like you've been working hard on that quilt with the gorgeous border fabric. sometimes taking quilts apart takes longer than sewing them together~!

  26. Truly old quilt tops! And such a variety of fabrics.

You're like a quilt surgeon taking the blocks apart and reassembling them!

  27. Great finds. Taking apart an old quilt to sew back together - now that is some kind of dedication!

  28. Great finds, but I imagine taking the vintage quilts apart and reconstructing them can be quite a task...albeit a satisfying one.

  32. I love TATW quilts, and the fabrics are really great in this top. Fun surprises in the string top! You really scored!

  33. Sometimes it is the fabric that speaks to us rather than the quilt design or workmanship.

  34. Some lovely fabrics in those quilts. Wish you good luck in re-doing the blocks. Looking forward to see how it will turn out:-)

  35. Nice tops!
I too like partial or "make do" blocks.

  36. Oh my -- it sounds like you are getting the bug of buying old tops and blocks to remake. I know that bug!

The string top is wonderful, and I am so jealous of those fabrics in the trip quilt and your dismantled blocks. I can't wait to see what you're going to do with these.
