Aurora Colony Quilt Show 2011

I was fortunate to go to one of my favorite quilt shows on Saturday. It is in the small town of Aurora, Oregon and the setting is the Historical Society.

All the volunteers are dressed up and always seem so delighted to see you. This is the main building, so you can see, it isn't huge, but they do put on an awesome show.
In the building behind the herb garden was a woman who was with a group in charge of the herbs. There was a roaring fire with mint tea and rosemary cookies. Need I say more?

The old cobbler's shop.
They have quite a few new quilts, but I'm drawn to the antiques. The hang wonderfully with the historical artifacts of the Aurora Colony.
This beauty was all appliqued. It was primitive but so charming!!
It was quilted in an all over fan pattern- directly over the applique. I loved it!!
Here is a wonderful Amish quilt. The sign said it was purchased in Pennsylvania. The light areas are gray and were a wonderful combination with the purples.
Can you believe this is the back to the Amish quilt? I was a bit surprised.
Look at this charming and humble quilt.

What an interesting green print. I also love the two reds pieced together. My kind of quilt making!
I love everything about this- especially the color combination.
Don't you think that's spectacular?

Hope you didn't have your running shoes on there and got to enjoy a more relaxed mode of transport.

  3. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, I have been there and it is such a charming little town, I believe it was settled by musicians if I recall, most from Germany?? The quilts are lovely, the back of the Amish Quilt is not in the tradition of their quilts, it really has me perplexed.
    Thanks

  10. I love seeing quilts in historic settings like this--especially the vintage workhorse quilts. That applique may be primitive, but it is a beauty.
What an interesting back for a quilt in cool colors. Use what you have, I guess!!

  18. Lucky you! Love the little book I have about the Aurora Colony and how it came to be.

That applique quilt with the the yellow centers reminds me of the Russian Sunflower or Noonday quilt I have been thinking about doing later this winter. What you photographed is wonderful & the little herb garden caught my gardening heart immediately. Thanks for sharing.

  28. Aurora is one of my favorite little towns; I was captured by its charm on a grade school field trip.

I read in some book or other on Amish quilting that it is not necessarily unusual for prints to be used as backing where nobody would see. I believe that prints as backing occurred more in some communities than others, Ohio vs. Lancaster County maybe?
