Cherry Tree and Birthday Blocks

Here are two more blocks I got quilted before leaving town!
It feels like it is going fairly fast.
I decided to go back and cross hatch before moving on to the next block. Do you think 1" apart is about right?
Here are two lovely birthday blocks. I don't know how many I have but I know I'm close to 111 that I want for the size quilt I'm doing. My sashing and cornerstones are chosen and it's packed up for my Sister's retreat. Thank you all!! I know I'm still expecting at least 2 more. It's not too late to add yours if you want to be a part of my 50th birthday quilt. Just let me know.
Sujata sent me this wonderful graphic Wagon Wheel pattern and Meredithe made this lovely needle case for me. I love extending my birthday! Thanks you so much my dear friends.

  1. Beautiful quilting, Lori. Don't know if it is an old wives tale or fact, but I've heard that on old quilts the more dense the quilting, the harder the winter when it was made. As soon as I read your question about the cross-hatching, my immediate thought was, "it depends on how hard the winter is." Silly, I know.
You seem to have had the birthday that keeps on giving--lucky you! : )

  2. Your cherry Tree looks incredible! Love your quilting on it. Is it machine basted? Do you baste it on your machine?
It was fun making the block for you. Got me started on HSTs.

  4. I am hand quilting an appliqued piece that is 40 x 40 and I'm doing 3/4" grids and it's looking wide to me??? I guess it will depend on the look you want. Study some vintage appliques and decide how much time you will put into the quilting. I love double lines, then I think, hmmm, that's double the amount. Hope you are having a great time in VT

  5. Fabulous Lori!! You have such a beautiful heirloom coming together! I purchased Sujata's pattern a couple years ago. I really want to make it...glad to be reminded of it!

  6. I forget what sweet fabrics you had in your Cherry Tree blocks, the quilting is wonderful. Love the comment from Janet O regarding the density of the cross hatching, I had not heard that one before. I think one inch will look nice, but if you get it finished and have a bad winter you can easily add quilt lines inbetween the quilting and make it 1/2 inche :)

  7. That is gorgeous, so much detail and work that you put into it.
I need to slow down and work on my projects instead of rushing through them.

  9. I love your Cherry tree quilt and your quilting progress is beautiful!! On a quilt as big as yours 1 inch crosshatching sounds do-able. I've never got the knack of using a hera marker so marking with masking tape I end up with a 3/4 inch grid.

  11. Love the crisp look of your cherry tree quilt. You could do 1" and if it seems like it isn't enough add more later.

  13. Your quilting looks very beautiful. I'd avoid my dilemna on how big to do a grid and draw one on an overhead sheet and overlay it on the block, that way you'll know if it's right for you.

  17. Just love the handquilting of your beautiful applique quilt! I agree with 'Janet', when she suggested 3/4" grid, but I guess you'll have to try it out on a small area to see if that looks pleasing to your eye! How nice to be receiving more birthday gifties!!!!!

  24. You are doing marvellous. Not sure about the 1" grid, it depends on how big the other motives are. I found (bij experience) that a too large grid doesn't do anything to the design. Maybe you can get some paper where you can see through and draw the size grid and put it over the quilt to see. Or try drawing a motiv of your quilting on paper and put a grid behind it, it might give you a good idea.
