Here are the latest Just Takes Two blocks. I opted to not make two airplanes and substituted my own 6" block.
One more block hand quilted on Beyond the Cherry Trees. Am trying to work on it before the summer heat hits.
What do you think about cross hatching in the background? The original had small clamshell quilting but I do think my motifs would get lost with that. My original plan was to quilt the motifs, then around the applique and go back at the very end and do the cross hatching. I'm starting to think I may want to do the background filler as I'm doing each block. Any ideas or thought on this?

Happy first day of summer!!

  1. I love your red blocks, especially the airplanes. Now I want to make a red and white quilt.

I think the cross-hatching would look really nice, and I think you're right that it would do a better job (than the clam shell) of highlighting your curvy quilting motifs. I'm not sure it matters whether you do it with the block or at the end -- I guess I like to finish the quilting in an area before I move on.

  3. I have to say I do love the crosshatching as a background, so traditional!!! Your work looks wonderful so far, beautiful stitching!!!!

  4. Crosshatching is perfect, traditional and suites the curves in the applique and other motifs you used. I too like to finish an area before moving on, only because it means less re-hooping. Your quilt is wonderful and I can't wait to see it once you do your background quilting.

  6. Looove that aeroplane block!

    Your quilting is beautiful!!
For me i would prefer to complete each block before going on to the next.

  7. I love the look of cross hatching. And I would probably do it as I go. I am wondering how the original quilt was done. I know the motifs for quilting came from the original but I never paid much attention as to any other quilting, if any.

  8. You're doing really well with the JT2 blocks. IMO I would quilt the cross hatching as I go and be finished with the block. I am speaking like as if I am an expert hand quilter. NOT! :)

  10. It's beautiful as it is! I don't think it needs the cross hatching, unless you love to do it!

  12. Cross hatching can be quite charming, I can't imagine the scale of the quilting just now, does it need it? If it does, please do it while you are at the block. It would be soooo boring if you had to do all the cross hatching at the end!

  13. I'm a sucker for cross hatching! It's quick, easy and fills an area with a classic look which I think would work well with your blocks. And I'd definitely be doing it with each block. Enjoy!

  16. Your JT2 blocks are looking great, but I really love BTCT! Cross hatching will be perfect - I always love the look of that.

  17. Cute airplane, but one is probably enough for this quilt.
I love BTCT and your are doing a beautiful quilting job. I thing those pretty motifs may struggle to compete with any background quilting, but less so with cross-hatching than with clamshells. I would have to do the background as I went with each block, otherwise I would be tempted not to go back and do it--but you probably don't suffer from that problem like I do. : )

  18. dear lori,i would quilt the background either in horizontal or vertical lines, otherwise the beautiful motivs you already quilted will be not good to see,but that is just what i am thinking, have a nice rest of the week, susi
ps:my house is stitchedand the zinnias as well!

  19. The x hatching will showcase your motifs and it doesn't matter when you do this part of the quilting. The only concern is how your lines are going to move from one block into another so I think this needs to be marked over the whole quilt before starting the grid lines.

  21. Oh I've got to get caught up on my Just take 2 blocks.....yours look fantastic.
I am a huge fan of cross hatch quilting, look at all the antique quilts that used this pattern and how lovely they still look today.
Plus this is such a classic looking pattern that Gay pulled together it would fit perfectly with the design. do you know if it is an original pattern or a antique remake?

    Nicely done!
    Happy Sewing

  22. I agree about the clam shell quilting...no no no! Cross hatch is always a wonderful design for the filler. The straight lines will help enhance your other designs and not distract from them!

One airplane is a good thing, especially if it's red/white!

  23. I keep meaning to message you and thank you again for the darling little patriotic quilt I won from you two years ago. I always get it out on June 14(flag day) and keep it out the rest of the summer and think of you and your generosity! Thanks a bunch! And have a fun and safe 4th of July! Can't believe how fast that is approaching! HUGS... and stitches

  24. Your BTCT looks fab Lori! I really need to get to work on mine. I think I would wait and do the crosshatch at the end, if it was me. But then, I like to eat all of each thing on my plate bofore moving on to the next thing. :)
