Rotary Cutter

I dropped my old rotary cutter the other day and it broke beyond repair. I was so sad! It was the best and only cutter I've had since I started quilting. It wasn't a brand name. (but it should be!)

I did a Google search and found one exactly like it, except mine was green. Kaiscissors.com is located in Seattle and didn't charge me shipping. I ordered the evening it broke and had it a couple days later!! I was thrilled!

I should have elaborated. I like that there is no "on/off" switch. As soon as you put your blade down the black sheath moves from the blade to cut. Also, it takes regular Olfa blades as replacements.

Anybody else own this brand of rotary cutter?

  1. I've never seen that brand of cutter before--what is it that you like about it specifically, and does it use the Olfa blades, or does it only use Kai blades?

  2. Lucky you to be able to replace a favorite tool with one so similar. I hate getting used to something new when I was happy with the old.

  4. I haven't seen this rotary cutter before, but I'm pretty positive that is made by one of the most well known scissors/knife companies called "Kaijirushi" ("KAI") in Japan. When I broke mine, I may have to get this one!

  7. I've never seen one like that before. I do like the idea that its got an "auto" off. Glad you could replace it.

  8. Looks nice. Does the tungsten blade wear well? I agree with Sharon on that "auto" off feature.

  9. I don't have the rotary cutter, but I have a pair of the 10.5 inch shears. They are wonderful! I adore KAI !

  11. I also use their scissors and LOVE them. They have "airplane" scissors that I take on trips.

  14. i haven't seen one just like yours, but it is very similar to my 'first' cutter, but blue. i don't particularly care for it..my blade kept getting stuck in the blade's guard making a straight cut especially difficult- 100% user error i'm sure :)

i have the olfa rotary cutter that when you squeeze the handle, the protector retracts...so kinda the same principle.

  15. I have a few of the Kai scissors and LOVE them. Didn't know they made rotary cutters. How cool to try a totally different one!

  16. I have heard of their scissors but not the rotary cutter. I know how it is when you find something you like and you break or lose it. So glad you were able to get it replaced quickly.

  18. I love their scissors. Didn't know they had rotary cutters. Will have to look for them at the next quilt show I go to. Thanks for the heads up and the good word about them. If you haven't tried their regular scissors, you should. I won't buy anything else.

  20. I've seen their scissors, and people seem to love them, but didn't know they made rotary cutters. Glad you got a new one so quick! Hard to be without our "favs".

  21. I have a pair of their scissors and love them, but had no idea they made rotary cutters. If the rotary cutter is even half as great as their scissors, then it must be fabulous!

  22. The Kai cutter was my first cutter as well, 26 years ago, and they are simply the best. Love the blades and find they last longer than the Olfa blades.

  23. I agree this is the best cutter made. Mine is blue. I also have the smallest one that is just dandy. I have a couple pairs of their scissors. As you can see I love all their products and colors. To reorder blades it seems they come overnight.

  24. I do not, but like you, I don't like the lock. I like to put the cutter down and cut. I have two that work on that principal. Take care. lane

  25. No..... I did not know that they made rotary cutters, but I have one of their scissors and I love them

  26. Seems like several of the commenters have scissors that are this brand. Is your rotary cutter child proof? What I mean is one that the blade is not easily accessed for a child (or adult that picks one up)?

  27. I'm so glad you were able to find a replacement. I have the Dritz brand which has the same feature as yours. I love having it ready to cut when I apply pressure...no buttons to push. Olfa brand drove me batty.

  28. Yes have a few Kai and love them. I have one I keep for wavey blades and use it when I wash fabric so I am sure it is washed.
Mine is blue....and I have a pink one. Took a photo for my blog today as I cannot use it till my new right shoulder is stronger and I am not happy.
I think they are my favorite and I have won various others over the years.
