Handquilting to Bring in the New Year.

I've been hand quilting my Beyond the Cherry Tree quilt this winter and back at it  to ring in the new year.. I had to spread it out and remark, so I thought I'd take a few photos of the blocks that are quilted. Here are those photos.
PS, There is a reason Sharon, Grass roots quilting sent her quilt off to be marked. It is nearly impossible to keep straight lines across the top of a quilt that measures 100" square! This quilt will be keeping with the Humble Quilts theme on my blog.

If you love reproduction quilts Gay is back at it again! Recreating an antique quilt in her collection and offering the blocks free for one month. Check out the new 1857 Album Quilt HERE.  She has other giveaways going to celebrate 20 years of Sentimental Stitches. Thank you Gay!!

I hope your new year is off to a terrific start!

  1. Simply beautiful! And have you ever seen an antique quilt with truly straight lines? We are just doing our part to carry on the traditions. (Although I must say, yours look pretty straight to me!)

  11. Lori, it is beautiful! Hand quilting such a large quilt is a lot of work. I hand quilt almost all of my quilts because I haven't practiced using my machine much. Hand quilting gives it so much character and makes it unique. So, it's not so much humble as it is just very special! You have a treasure there.

You inspire me to return to hand quilting. At least for certain special quilts.

  15. I would agree this is in no way humble! wonderful hand quilting and with all the little motifs in the quilting I can't see any problem with straight lines! Such a beautiful quilt :)

  17. This is the most magnificent quilt! Folky not formal, so charming. I love all the many berries, must have been hard to do! And your handquilting is lovely, just what is required . I especially love the odd little motifs that sneak into the more traditional quilting, the original maker must have been such an artist, so creative. I wonder what she d think of us, recreating her work, and admiring it worldwide, online!

  18. Wow!! Gorgeous, beautiful work! The applique is already wonderful en now the handquilting also so beautiful too! An heirloom in the making. The lines look straight but if they are not (completely so), never mind, those antique quilts are seldom perfect either and doesn't that make them more special?

  23. What beautiful, beautiful work! Could you tell me if you quilt over/on top of the appliqué pieces? It's hard for me to tell from the pictures (guess I need new glasses ;) Someday I would love to hand quilt a quilt. Yours is surely going to be an heirloom!

  24. Been there - done that Lori. A quilt I made approx. the same size. I couldn't get those lines straight, no matter how many times I tried.
In saying that your quilt is gorgeous, and it might be a bit kike my machine quilting - at the end of the day any mistakes doesn't matter or even show. :-)

  29. I like that you show close-ups of the blocks. One of my favorite is what I would call cherry tree branches coming out of a basket.
