An Evening With Gwen

Gwen Marston has been teaching quilting and have touched so many people with her fun and varied classes for so long. She is ending her teaching career in 2016 so I didn't want to pass up a chance to see her.  I've taken numerous classes with her and she was the featured speaker at the Sisters guild last night. Thanks to my friend Phyllis, she signed me up as her guest. (thank you again Phyllis!)
Here's a recap.
The night started with guild members sharing their Gwennie inspired quilts:

Jean Wells. owner of the Stitchin' Post, shared a little of her long friendship with Gwen  then introduced her.

Gwen's "37" sketches were hanging and she referred to these throughout the night.

Several of these small ones inspired larger quilts.

I think this one was one of my favorites of the abstract solids.

How many of you readers have taken a class from Gwen? I  think next week I'll share my "Gwennie" quilts.

And if you missed it, here's my Instagram feed for this week.

Make it a great weekend!

  3. Thanks for posting these photos from Gwen's workshop. She has been my favorite quilter for years and I've enjoyed watching her progression from very traditional to more "outside of the box" over the years. I've never been fortunate enough to meet her, and now that she will no longer be teaching, I'm glad we have all of her wonderful books to enjoy and continue to learn from.

  5. I took three of Gwennie's classes some years back during different Sister's Quilt Show weeks. She is a rock star of quilting teachers in my book. I love her to pieces. AND her books are fabulous. Now that she's retiring from teaching I feel sorry for quilters who won't have the opportunity to be her student and get to know her.

  7. I had known Gwen for many years. I took classes when living in Illinois. She was a huge fan of Mary Shaffer, who was from Flushing, Michigan, which is where I am from. I have all her early books from the Gwen and Joe era. She was an inspiring teacher. Looks like you all had a very enjoyable evening.

  9. Never have met Gwen, but I know she has a very loyal following and those who have taken classes from her seem to have their view of quilting expand.
Lucky you to get this last evening in with her. : )

  13. One of our local quilt shops in Bellingham, Two Thimbles arranged to have Gwen teach in our area a few years ago. In over 40 years of quilting it was the most excited I have been for a class. What a neat, creative lady she is. I have been an admirer for many years and yes I have most of her books as well. I never tire of her work.

  30. Wow, I can't believe she's retiring! I was going to say she's been around forever, but I guess that makes it more logical that she would retire, at least from teaching. Lucky you got to see her! I just found your blog after a lot of years of not knowing what you were doing. =) Susan Nixon desertskyquilts.wordpress.com
