Cultural Fusion Windmills

I finally got around to adding my last row to make this 8x8 blocks. it's a happy, summery quilt. Thanks Sujata for teaching the freeform class at Sisters! We have a baby arriving in the family and maybe this will be a quilt for him/her. It definitely looks more girly to me.
I added a couple new fabrics on the row I did. I've always loved this neighborhood fabric and it seemed to fit in this quilt.
The one in the center was given to us at the Sisters picnic and I thought it was fitting to add to this quilt.

We are on the move again to get someone hired!! So many businesses looking to hire people and it isn't easy finding the right fit. Fingers crossed this time! I need my sewing time back!!

Have a lovely weekend. More adventures abound in Central Oregon for me!

70273 Project

Not too long ago I came across THIS site and story. I read a lot of historical books but never had any idea the scope of this!

Between January 1940 and August 1941 (before the Holocaust began), 70,273 physically and mentally disabled people – men, women, teens, boys, and girls – were murdered by the Nazis. Though they never even laid eyes on the disabled person they were evaluating, the Nazi doctors read the medical files and, if from the words on the page, the person was deemed “unfit” or an “economic burden on society”, the doctor placed a red X at the bottom of the form. Three doctors were to read each medical file, and when two of them made a red X on the page, the disabled person’s fate was sealed. Most were murdered within 1-2 hours.

I decided to make a few blocks for the project.

When I was young my parents encouraged me to write to a great aunt who never grew up mentally. As I did genealogy I found out that my aunt was in this institution.

The 1907 legislature passed a law calling for the creation of the “Wyoming Home for the Feeble-minded and Epileptic.” The school opened in Lander in 1912 as the “Wyoming School for Defectives.” In 1919 the facility’s name was changed to the Wyoming Training School; (thankfully it was called the Training a school when my aunt was there)

Can you imagine that it would take 2 red x's on a doctor's report and the Nazi's would put to death "defectives"?! Terrifying!

I'm not sure where the project is going but it was simple enough to make a few blocks to send in signifying the lives that were snuffed out so horrifically.

Despite this downer kind of post, make it a great day!

More of the Sisters Quilt Show Highlights

Here are a few more of my favorites from the Sisters outdoor Quilt Show.

Paddle boarding is BIG in Central Oregon. My niece has asked if I want to try it....

Love this!

This was part of the Moda display.
Fun and quirky! We had a little trailer like that when I was little. Maybe that's why I like this one so much.

I love the quilting on this one.

This was in the teacher's tent. I was fascinated by the perfect circles! Seriously perfect!
Another fun and quirky one.

Let's make this a fantastic week!

this outrageous hike (click to see more about that hike!) up to 10,358 elevation this is all I have to show you this week.

There are a few more links to the Porch quilt that you can see HERE.

Love to you all!

Betty's Box Kite

Well, You all may remember my conundrum- I wrote about it HERE. I was trying to keep the integrity of the designer's assembly instructions but it wasn't working at all! I redrafted it in EQ and sent her photos comparing my EQ and hers and the end result was very similar. I called, we chatted, and she agreed to revising the directions.  So, I started all over.
I took a day all to myself,  before company came in,  and got this top put together! Woop! Woop!
My Electric Quilt drawing.
 And the quilt! Ta-da!

It's not perfect, but its done and winging its way to the owner!

Have a wonderful day!

Antique Quilts at Sisters

Look at this amazing quilt! It was for sale at the show and if I would have had some cash laying around my house I would have loved to purchase it! It's beautiful! It's quirky! It gets more fun and unusual the more I look at it!
 Which way is up?
Love the yellow and the reverse applique on the bud. They are all unique. Most of them only have 2 slits with the bud peaking through.
Sort of a weird reverse applique around the edge. Mountains? Trees?
This fun ocean waves with green center was for sale.
I love this diagonal cable quilting on this simple Irish Chain.
There was a display in the clock shop of a woman who had collected these beauties.
 So colorful!
Low volume, but it wasn't always like that. This quilt was well executed.
This was displayed in the men's section. The quilt top was vintage....
And a man quilted it. Love these circles!
My Instagram feed for the week.

Monday (the 18th) we will be sharing our Porch quilts! If you have finished any of the sections and have not shown it, please send me a photo or the link to your blog.

Have an excellent weekend!

Sisters Quilt Show

I'm going to get a little ahead of myself...

Release the Geese II by Sarah Bond
And tell you this one was at the top of the list for my favorite at the quilt show. This was included in a special exhibit of Quilt Con quilts. Every time I walked by I saw something more I liked about it.

The speaker after dinner in the park on Friday (which was moved into the high school because of the rain) was Laura Wasilowski.  She was hilarious! Her quilts were pretty fun and spectacular as well. Here was a little series of quilts about her favorite chair. Hers are not quilts I make, but would love to take a class with her.
Funny, this ordinary quilt was at the top of my list for a favorite too. The collection of fabric made this one so unique! I loved the map too.(I have a little something for maps) Maybe it was a favorite because I can see my son liking this one after his travels.

This one of a kind quilt was made with baby clothes. So darn cute!
This was a quilt I saw at a show and do not know who made it or how to make it- I've had many people ask. I KNOW NOTHING!
The Stitchin Post had an exhibit of Kona color of the year. The yellow was certainly unusual and eye catching.
This one reminded me of our Medallion challenge theme for the month- a liberated style log cabin quilt. (must get busy on my challenge!)

Every year I see a a few of the same patterns, this year was Gypsy Wife by Jen Kingwell. Most of them were super colorful but this one was not. Very unusual quilt.

Take care and enjoy your Wednesday, my friends.

Friends and Quilting

One huge benefit of quilting and blogging is the friends you meet. This weekend was no exception. After a difficult few weeks it really was what my heart needed.
" Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.  For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up. "

One of my favorite photos of the weekend. The newspaper had a booth and he did a great job capturing the moment in his Newspaper "frame".Michelle, Me, Juliann.
Juliann and I picked up my friend Christy on Friday for class and we forgot to get a photo of the 3 of us.
I felt like I've known Sujata although this was our first (hopefully not last) face to face meeting. It was a fun and casual class and she was a great teacher!!

This quilt belonged to a student who had taken a class with Sujata in WA state and  brought it to share.
A few students opted on a different look than the majority went with. I liked this one a lot.
Someone did this in awesome indigoes. (why didn't I think of that?!?!)
I met Merry from Mt Vernon. She has participated in my little quilt swap.
I met Jo from Moonbear Design and Quilting. She quilted my Flags of the American Revolution quilt for me and did an outstanding job.
Here's the blocks I made in Sujata's Windmill class.

A little buzz on sudafed and coffee goes a long way! I do want to add one more row so it is square.
The next day at the quilt show I met Sandi from Shhdesigns blog. She is from Canada and has come several years in a row. Thanks for the cool gift, Sandi! I got it from Anna.
Juliann, from Lining up my Stitches blog,  and I have quite a bit in common, but she is much quieter, gentler and reflective than I am. Both our moms had Alzheimer's, we are quilters, bloggers and runners. Thanks for being such a good listener and putting up with my many tears on Thursday.
We were browsing around at non quilt vendors (I think we were at the Bend Distillery booth!) I heard my name and low and behold I see Kathy from Material Obsession! I do believe this is the third year (maybe 4) that I've seen her at Sisters. If she is coming next year I'm taking a class from her!! She is so sweet and creative! Her quilts are off the chart!!
And we met up for lunch in the park with the ladies who have been sewing away at Randy's new house in Caldera Springs. I was happy to see them there. Missed you all!!

I have all week to show you quilts, but this is what got me through the weekend. Thank you all for your sweet comments on all my blog posts! I read every one, but have not had time to respond.

Make it a wonderful week.
