My confirmation of a class came this week!! I'll be taking Liberated Baskets with Gwen Marston.

It has been a few years since I have taken a class at the Quilters Affair. This is the week leading up to the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. It is an exciting part of the quilt show. I'll be doing dinner in the park with friends on Friday night. The guests speakers that night will be Gwen Marston,
Sue Spargo, & Tonye Belinda Phillips. It should be a wonderful show and tell!!

I've taken a couple of classes with Gwen before and found her laid back style fun and informative. I finished this little quilt in her 4 block applique class. Or, as in my case, make one block and call it good! We used photos of antique quilts to make our own patterns and hence, or own original quilt.

I wish I would have made 4 blocks now.

I also took a string quilt class from her. Everyone in class made a different quilt. It was all about the strings, not the pattern. This is one of my favorite quilts.

Oh yeah, the South Sisters Mountain photo? I plan on climbing that this year. But not during quilt show week!

Quilting on Pink Lemonade and Winners

I've been doing some quilting, but moving along rather slowly. I usually do my quilting in the evening when we watch tv for an hour or two. last night I wasn't feeling well so I went directly to bed. Hopefully tonight I can get more stitches put in.
I did a mix of techniques, which you cannot see in the photo.

So I put my Photoshop skills to use! Don't laugh too hard! The original antique quilt was tied and not quilted at all. I think the ties made it darling, so I added them in cotton DMC thread at the intersections. You can see that by the asterisks. The quilting is the black lines. I didn't think it needed too much as it is a simple pattern and a simple quilt.
I kept that playful bit when I added the pink binding cut on the bias. I wouldn't usually cut it that way for a small quilt but I really wanted the spiral effect. I think it works!
I'm thinking about the first of February I'll add Mr Linky so we can have a lemonade party. I love seeing everyone's version! If you do not have a blog send me your photo and I'll add it.

Just Takes Two

Playoff games were Sunday and I got a chance to sew the second installment of Just Takes 2 mystery.

I had a little trouble with the house block, and even though it isn't perfect, it will do. Set in seams have never been my favorite technique.

Here are all the blocks so far.

BTW, I forgot to add the giveaway will close on Saturday night. That will give me Sunday to get packages ready to mail.

Pink Lemonade- Part 3 Finale

Before I get to Pink Lemonade I wanted to say thank you so much for your kind and generous comments on my Jane Stickle quilt. I got so much encouragement from you all since I blogged about it a couple of winters ago. Thanks for helping spur me on to the finish line! It is on my bed and I am enjoying it so much!! ALSO, that Jane post was my 500th. How cool is that?! I'm celebrating with a snoopy dance and a giveaway. I am finishing up a project this week for it, so keep your eyes open.

Without further ado:
We are making four corners, which are quarter blocks. I will use the same print for all four corner blocks.

From the colored print cut three (3) 2 3/4" squares, then cut them twice on the diagonal for a total of 12 quarter square triangles.

From the background/pink cut four (4) 2" squares and two (2) 2 3/4" squares, cut twice on the diagonal for 8 quarter square triangles.

Lay them out as in the photo above.

I pieced the triangle units (print and background) first, added them to the square, then added the corner print triangle.

Make 4. If you've made them correctly you should be able to see a churn dash block when laid out as above. Again, you will lose a seam allowance if you make one block and cut it into fourths. It will not work!! (unless you want a really humble quilt)

I didn't think that was enough of a step to leave it at that. So, let's get the top together.

This beautiful gold was my first choice for the setting squares. Although I love this fabric after I put my blocks on the top I saw right away it wasn't going to work.

Here was another choice. It is another fabric that I love, but I wasn't feeling the love with these blocks.

As soon as I put this fabric with the blocks I knew it was just right. (Hello Goldilocks!)
Don't rush it when looking for the right fabric. Try another color if you have to. I think you'll know it when it's right.
Cut twelve (12) 5" squares and lay them out as in the above photo.

On the corners I always add the side blocks first, then the corner. When adding the corner I fold my block in half to find the center of both pieces, pin that center mark, then sew the seam.

Sew together block in diagonal rows. I put the like half blocks across from each other.

Sew these rows together....

Ta-Da!! You get Pink Lemonade!!

Excuse Me While I Finish a VIP (Very Important Project)

Hi friends!! It has been so fun to see your Pink Lemonade blocks!! At the end I'll add a link so we can see them all. Be patient for the next step OK? I want to take it slow and let everyone get a chance to sew the first two steps.

I had a partial quilt top, that I took apart and made two little quilts from. As you can see I was hand quilting this. For now it has been set aside.

This one is quilted but needs a binding. It has been set aside, as well.

I actually did get a couple of machine quilting lines done on my Irish Chain and my Pink Lemonade is basted and waiting for quilting stitches.
All of these have been put aside so I can finish THIS..................

The binding is DONE! The quilting in the scallops is DONE!! The label is made. I decided to add one more row of quilting around the whole quilt below the triangles. I would venture to say I am about 1/2 way.

I was looking in the Dear Jane book and found this template of the corner block. When I worked on mine I had no computer program and no special rulers or templates. It was a challenge and that made it fun.

Pink Lemonade Part 2

We are moving on to the half blocks. It would be so easy and tempting to make one whole block, then cut it in half, but then you'd lose any seam allowance. I like to make humble quilts (like some our grandmother's made) but as long as we have the extra fabric we will do it right.
To make 2 half blocks:
From printed fabric, cut:
1- 2 3/4" square then cut it twice on the diagonal for 4 quarter square triangles.
2- 2 3/8" squares, then cut once on the diagonal for 4 half square triangles.
These may be easy to get confused so be careful.
From background/pink cut:
4 2" squares
1- 2 3/4" square then cut it twice on the diagonal for 4 quarter square triangles
1 2 3/8" square, then cut once on the diagonal for 2 half square triangles

Lay out your fabric as show above. Sew together the quarter square triangles making sure to line them up so the straight of grain is on the outside to prevent stretching.
Match up your triangles to make the corner square.

Sew together in rows.

Then sew those rows together.

I never stray too far from grandmother's humble piecing! LOL

To make the quiltalong like the original you will need ten (10) half blocks. I made mine in pairs with the same fabric

Into the Vortex

It's a quilting vortex and I got sucked in!! LOL Here's my version of the 12 Days of Christmas that Temecula Quilt Co put out. Did I have other projects I should have been working on? Of course! But this was so much fun!!

This pin cushion was such a thoughtful gift from Megan at Will Work for Fabric. Thank you so much!!

As I'm hand sewing the binding down I'm also quilting in the scallop so it's going a bit slow. I've got one side DONE!
I may have to quilt one more straight line at the bottom of the triangles. It seems like it might need more.

Pink Lemonade- Part 1

I am so thrilled to hear so many of you want to make Pink Lemonade!! There is always so much going on in the world of quilting blogs that I always wonder if anybody will want to do it. I love to share with you and see your wonderful creations! Thank you for playing along with me!!

Here are the specs:
The quilt, as I have it made will finish approx 17"x 22.5. The shoofly blocks will finish at 4 1/2" square. This is such a classic fun pattern that it is no wonder I was drawn to the antique.

We are making 6 of them. In the original quilt the blocks are (2) red, (2)navy and (2) brown or tan. My plan was to make it fairly close to the original- feel free to use what you love.

To make one block:
From the main print (brown, navy and red) cut:
(2) 2 3/8 squares, then once on the diagonal for 4 triangles.
(1) 2" square.
From pink/background cut:
(2) 2 3/8" squares, then once on the diagonal for 4 triangles.
(4) 2" squares

Sew together the print and background triangles to make the corner half square triangles.
Lay your pieces out, as shown.

Sew into rows, (press toward the pink) then sew the rows together.

Make 6 for your quilt and ta-da! Finished for now.

If you haven't done my quiltalongs, I do not have a set time or day that I post the next step. I like to take it nice and slow so there is NO pressure to keep up.

Intermission!!

I got the red and white blocks from Just Takes 2 completed on New years Day.

I got a few more bow ties added to the pile the week before Christmas. Can you tell I was working with my green scraps?
But now I need an INTERMISSION......

To get the binding on my Jane Stickle quilt!! I unfolded the edges, ironed it down, then basted near my pencil marks. I wasn't sure how to handle to corners as I did have it kind of looped out somewhat like the original. It really wasn't working for me and I'm happy and not as stressed now that I rounded them off. It looks good to me!!

My bias binding is going on OK. I am pivoting in the valleys. I will need to figure out how to sew them down on the other side. One step at a time. I'm going slowly as Dorothy recommended (I have no reason to doubt her common sense approach as I feel she is an absolute expert) and have about 1/2 of it sewn on. Hubby will have to understand if dinner is late getting on the table tonight!! LOL

I am so excited that many are joining in on the quiltalong!! I'll post the block directions Thursday morning. I love Pink Lemonade for the name. Thanks Lucy for thinking of Lemonade and Annie O for Pink Lemonade!!

Quilt-A-Longs Part 1

It all started with the antique quilt just like this one.

Cheddar Cheese & Crackers

Then Strawberry Fields.

And Midnight Stars.

Here's the fabrics I chose for the block our next quiltalong.

Here's the two pinks I used for the background. They turned out a bit similar once the top was all together. See the different pink used in the antique? There is just a little bit of it, but it adds a bit of a surprise.

Here is my rendition.

Some of you may already picked your fabric. For the blocks get into your scrap bin because it won't take much, that's for sure!!

I kept the colorway the same as the original. The whole blocks- 2 brown, 2 navy, 2 red. The half blocks and quarter blocks all brown.

We will start with the whole blocks. You will need approximately;

Print: 1- 2 1/2" x 8" strip for each whole block

Background/Pink: 1 fat quarter will be plenty or enough background to make a fat quarter.

I'll be back with cutting instructions next.

I need to get my sample quilted. Now that BTCT borders are done that is next on my list.

PS If you have a great idea for a name I'd love to hear it!!

2011 Finale

Here is the antique small quilt we will reproduce this month. As you are possibly sewing the next day or so look through your stash for pink and yellow if you want to do it with these colors. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I like them together. My top is done, it is basted, but not quilted.

I have been appliqueing the stems on these and now to add the chain stitch from the stem to the berries. I am hoping to work on that tonight and possibly tomorrow night. It shouldn't take too long then I will be all caught up, ready for the last block and the last border.

Gay from Sentimental Stitches and Brenda, writer of the Dear Jane book have collaborated to bring us a red and white mystery quilt this year. Check it out at Just Takes 2. I plan on participating with muslin background and a variety of red prints.

Sewing Sisters

I'd thought I'd recap some of the lovely quilters I met this year. It always amazes me how many wonderful ladies I've met through blogging, the Internet, or quilting.

I made my first trip to NYC with my daughter. This was the view of the city from our rooftop. It was such a memorable trip!

Sue (from I Sew Quilts UK)and I had been corresponding for some time. It was wonderful to finally meet her.

Bev from Australia made reservations for a big group at the Russian Tea Room in NYC. This was a photo of fellow bloggers. That was such a fun evening.

The wonderful event brought me to NYC.

I had a brief encounter with Sharon- Grassroots Quilting and Victoria- Bumble Beans Inc.

The Sisters Quilt show is always a good opportunity to meet fellow quilters. Here is Kathy from Material Obsessions and Pam from Library Gal Quilts. Two lovely ladies, for sure!!

Juliann from Lining up My Stitches is not only a quilter she's a runner and that is what seems to have bonded us.

Of course, summer time in Central Oregon and I had retreat time with Randy- Barrister's Block and Bonnie- Quiltville.

Before heading out on a quilt cruise I had the pleasure to meet up with Karen from
Log Cabin Quilter. We have so many of the same quilt patterns and do many of the same quilts. It is almost comical.

Bonnie's hubby was unable to go on two cruises with her this year so I was thrilled when Bonnie asked me to go with her. I'd never heard of a quilt cruise before this!!

Here's the long sewing table with 25 fantastic and fun quilters!!

It was quite an experience.

I got to meet up with Carrie- Cricketwood Prims and Michelle from Mocha Moochell blog. Quilters are crazy and even get out in their PJ's for a good sale.

I ended my year with good friends, Randy- Barrister's Block and Claire who now has a blog!!

I hope to meet more of you this year.

It has been a lovely week in Sunriver!! We went to the lodge last night for dinner and to see the Christmas lights. It was so cold but so pretty!

We managed to do a bit of shopping. Here's what I chose to bind my Jane Stickle quilt with. It is actually bluer in real life.

Met My Triangle Goal!

The triangles on my Jane Stickle quilt are quilted!! I reached my goal to get them quilted before Christmas. Woo-Hoo!!

I am going to find the book today and see what quilting is in the scallops and what color blue the binding is. I've never done a scallop binding before.

Someone had asked to see the whole thing the last time I posted about it. It has been about 10 years since I drew on the scallops- seriously I think I used a plate! I don't even remember now. I'm not sure what it will look like once I remove the basting and unfold the edges. Sort of like opening a Christmas present!! LOL You never know what you are going to find!!

I thought I'd show you one of my old favorite snuggle quilts. Millennium Garden by Jan Patek made in 2003. I put the brushed side of some cotton on the back so it's a little like flannel. It has quite a bit of machine quilting too so it makes a good winter quilt.

Have a fantastic weekend and week!! I'm leaving town for a girls retreat on Monday. It will include good friendship, sewing and a bit of wine.....

Jingle Bells...

Look what is next up on my quilt list! I'm having my doubts I'll get it done before the end of the year, but if I can start on it I will be happy.

I made a couple of these primitive hearts for a hostess gift.....

and I liked them so much I had to make a few for myself. I'll hang them on the tree when we get one.

My daughter is coming tonight and I hoped to make the room cheery for her visit.

Porter the dog gave it the thumbs up!! Then I promptly kicked him out!

Joy to the World

The Bible quilt is done.....

I had planned to bring it outside and take photos but I was delayed getting home today and it was too dark. Here's the top half....

And the bottom half. I did some simple meandering quilting. I kept it primitive to go along with the wool applique. I had to remake the label and will get it sewn on tonight and packaged and sent off in the next day or two. Woo-hoo!!

I wish I could say I made this, but I didn't. I purchased it online from LJ Fibers at www.woolyredrug.com. I kept one and the other is winging its way to our friends in Denmark.

Here is another adorable hand made item I bought online for my daughter. It has a pin on the back so it can go on a hat, a blouse, a dress or a purse. I purchased it from Lana at http://honeysucklelane.com/

21 triangles left to do! I can't remember what my other goal was but my new one is to get the triangles quilted before Christmas! I can't think of anything better to give myself. (Actually that's not true, but that's another story!!)
I really just wanted to share some of my weekend with you but felt compelled to put in a quilt photo. I hope you aren't getting tired of seeing my Jane Stickle quilt.

Deck the Halls

Another finish?! Tada!!When Juliann mentioned the 12 Days of Christmas BOM by
Temecula Quilt Co it reminded me that this was in my basted stack ready to be quilted. This is yet another wool applique quilt designed by Cheri.

I got it quilted and bound yesterday and on the wall today!!

I had to include my Danish Nisse in the photo. The holidays are here when I see them!!

A friend gave me this panel some time ago and it was the perfect size for the backing. I didn't do too great at getting it centered, but I like it.

Seriously, I'm warmed up on my machine quilting and the Bible quilt is next on the list..then I want to get my red and white one quilted before Christmas. That may not happen, but I can try.

Thanksgiving Project

Last year I had a big group at the house and we all made a fun Christmas banner. I enjoyed that so much I thought I'd spend Thanksgiving weekend making another holiday project.

This little table topper designed by Cheri was in the latest issue of Primitive Quilts and Projects.

The half pennies at the ends and the twigs and pennies on the sides are wool; the rest is cotton. It was a fun project.

Someone had asked me recently in an email if I was going to do another doll quilt quilt-a-long. I lost that email- I'm so sorry.
It seems there is always so much going on in blogland that I hadn't really given it much thought. I'd love to do it so let me know if you are interested and we'll start after the new year.

Giving Thanks

It looks like I have the wrong holiday!! Here is the final block of the Bible quilt. The original has embroidered "rays" coming out of the sun but I didn't really like it well enough to add it. I think it is obvious it is the sun.

I finally got the small borders on the sides yesterday. I need to piece a backing and then get it ready to give away for Christmas. I'm thrilled with it so I hope the recipient is too.

Here's my little pumpkin pin cushion from Elizabeth at Sunflower Fields Pattern Co. Mine is the simple version compared to hers, but I think it is very sweet. Thanks for your generosity Liz and your help in getting it together.

And for those of you in the United States have a safe and grateful day as you celebrate Thanksgiving. We are down to three- a Thanksgiving first for me!!

On Going Projects

Look at this!

Nicky suggested it after the last post since I do not have a place to lay out my blocks. They are in the order of the original quilt and I can see that I will probably be changing them around a bit. All except the middle block which has my signature.

I laid out my Jan Stickle quilt and had 41 triangles to complete- most of them are the plain ones. So if I do 8 a week, I'll have the triangles done in 5 weeks! Wow! I like the sound of that.

I finished 4 last night- 8 a week should be no problem.

I did take a peek under the basted edge. It looks like I have the scallops all marked and I'll want to quilt a little in there.

I have a little time to figure out how to apply binding to a scalloped edge, and get some fabric for it. I'll have to look at the book, but it seems to me Jane used a medium blue fabric for the binding.

I made a change of plans and it will only be 4 of us for Thanksgiving dinner this week. For that, I am thankful.

I have much to be grateful for- one is the many readers of this blog that I consider friends. Have a lovely week.

Beyond the Cherry Tree

Here is block number 24- one more to go!!

I finished one border. I'm going to start prepping the next one.

I haven't been this excited about a quilt since finishing my Blind Man's Fancy. (which is at Linda's waiting to be quilted)

I'm sure it will be a few more months before the Cherry Tree quilt will be together, but it is nice to think about being so close.

PJ Sale

I finished this little fall pillow this weekend. I started it so I'd have a little hand sewing while attending to my grand jury duties once a week. I thought I'd better get it finished before it is time to take out Christmas decor. It was in the fall issue of Primitive Quilts and Projects. The first 3 issues of this magazine have been fantastic!!

Saturday morning was the yearly Pajama Sale at the Stitchin' Post. I didn't need much but it is a fun, busy event to go to.

Carrie of Cricket Wood Prims and Gardens lives in Bend but we've never met- until Saturday. She was with Michele of Mocha Moochell so it was a double surprise. Remember it was a PJ sale!! LOL

I had enough excitement on Sunday for quite some time. Check it out on my other blog- Get to Goal.

Basket Block Challenge

Back in June or July Kathie sent out basket blocks to several bloggers. She didn't want to make a quilt with them and thought a challenge would be fun and stretching. I have to admit I always jump at the chance for a challenge but I am not any good at them and have a hard time getting creative.
Well, one thing led to another, (Kathie lost her block in her sewing room!) and the challenge lost all rules. Maybe I work best that way! LOL

The 4 baskets in the center were attached as one block and that's what I started with.

I suppose my color palette reflects the autumn colors outdoors. I tried to bring in a few of the same colors that were in the center.

On my agenda for today? Baste, Baste, Baste!!

This quilt, my Twelve Days of Christmas, the Bible BOM, and my red and white Irish chain.

Winter Stitching

Look what came out of the dungeon!? It's my Jane Stickle quilt....it has only been a 10 or 11 year project! LOL Will winter of 2011-2012 be the finale?! I sure hope so!!

Here's the cute red and green block turned into a little pillow. I had to replace the hst red and still managed to cut off the points. I love it anyway.

Surprise Box

My friend and quilter extraordinaire sent me a box of quilty goodness. A woman from her guild was doing some purging of her sewing room. Kat knows my style and also knows I buy old quilt blocks or tops and repurpose them, just as this woman did.

Here's some vintage black and white fabric. I think I'll move one seam on the longer piece and make a doll size quilt.

I'm not exactly sure what to do with these. Look at the little pile of yo-yos! I've always wanted a yo-yo pillow top. I'm not sure if there is enough at this point.

These quilts from the 30's are not in too bad of shape. I little bit of black buttonhole and the Dresden will be as good as new.

This is about a crib size so I haven't thought much about how this will be used.

Kat also knows I work with wool. This is an old pattern but I love it. I have all the wool felted and ready to go.

Can ya'll believe I am home SICK?! Aargh. I got ready for work this morning and about 8:30 instead of leaving the house I thought I'd lay down for a little while.....3 hours later I woke up! I guess I needed my rest. I'm heading that way once again as I am really running out of steam today. I think everything from the past 2 weeks is catching up with me.

Here is my 2011 submission to Amy's Quilt festival. I have no idea how she got started doing this but it is such a fantastic idea. If you want to see a quilt show and cannot make it Houston then you must go to Amy's and look at all the lovely quilts.

I finished this quilt earlier this year and love it as much as I did then. I adore anything patriotic and this quilt took center stage all summer long at my house. It is a pattern designed by PieceOCake.

Sweet Quilts

Look at this adorable mini thimble quilt!! A fellow blogger and friend sent this to me this past week. I received in the mail a few days after my mom's fall. We both know it was meant to be because it was in the mail before my mom had her accident. I wanted to cry right into it when I saw it, but I didn't. (too cute for that!!) It is so precious and it will remind me of all the support I received from my quilt friends. I do not want to embarrass the sender but I will say she is very generous to many quilting bloggers. Thank you dear friend!!

I thought I'd show this wonderful humble quilt from the Aurora quilt show. The blocks might be all 5hst x5hst but they are all different sizes. Oops, the second row down, far right is only a 4x5! hahaha The maker did a fantastic job of making it work. Gosh, why do we always have to make everything so darn perfect??

There's nothing symmetrical about these blocks! It is so sweet!!

Here's my sweet wool runner from Primitive Quilts and Projects. After I took the photo I realized I left off my initials on the bottom right. I need to get them added.

Thanks so much for all your lovely wishes and prayers. My mom is slowly, very slowly improving.
They did some tests on Wednesday because she was having a lot of stomach pain still. They did find a hernia. They will let me know on Friday what they can do for that to ease the pain. The pain in her arm seems to be lessening a little. Where it is broke is so black and blue.

My sister who is a nurse is here and that makes me feel better. And I got to sleep in my own bed last night. Yay!!

Weekend

My weekend started out awesome but took a turn for the worse when my mom fell yesterday and fractured her shoulder. She is at home and I expected her to be doing better then she is by now. I spent the night last night and even grabbed some stitching-didn't touch it at all. I'd appreciate prayers for her to turn the corner and for strength and wisdom for me.

I was going to post a photo of my hand project but haven't figured out how to do that with my iPhone.

Hurrah, My brother is covering at the house for me so I could come home and take a shower and get ready to sepdn the night again. I went running yesterday morning and never did get a shower! Yikes!!

We have been having some beautiful fall weather. Temps are down in the 30's at night but high 60's and sunny in the day. What an amazing fall we've had!!

Hey, lookie here! It's Linda Collins. I had the pleasure to meet her in NYC for the red and white quilt exhibit. We had a lovely meal at the Russian Tea House. How fun to get the most recent issue of Quiltmania and get a tour of her beautiful home!!

I recognized the maker's name of this quilt too. Bev Bannard!!I met her and her spunky daughter at the Russian Tea house too!! What a gorgeous quilt!!!

I have never met Kate in person but we read each other's blogs. I was pleasantly surprised to see her quilt in the magazine too!! Woo-Hoo!! Not only does she have a quilt blog she has a fitness blog called Crunch Time. Check it out and give her a little encouragement.

I've had this magazine for a couple of weeks now but just the past few days actually gotten to read it. Some of the quilt shops I would love, but what is with the patterns they are giving us? I think I only like one of them in this issue. Is it because they are trying to make such a unique pattern that they have to make it ugly? Or use ugly fabric? Just thinking aloud......

Aurora Colony Quilt Show 2011

I was fortunate to go to one of my favorite quilt shows on Saturday. It is in the small town of Aurora, Oregon and the setting is the Historical Society.

All the volunteers are dressed up and always seem so delighted to see you. This is the main building, so you can see, it isn't huge, but they do put on an awesome show.

In the building behind the herb garden was a woman who was with a group in charge of the herbs. There was a roaring fire with mint tea and rosemary cookies. Need I say more?

The old cobbler's shop.

They have quite a few new quilts, but I'm drawn to the antiques. The hang wonderfully with the historical artifacts of the Aurora Colony.

This beauty was all appliqued. It was primitive but so charming!!

It was quilted in an all over fan pattern- directly over the applique. I loved it!!

Here is a wonderful Amish quilt. The sign said it was purchased in Pennsylvania. The light areas are gray and were a wonderful combination with the purples.

Can you believe this is the back to the Amish quilt? I was a bit surprised.

Look at this charming and humble quilt.

What an interesting green print. I also love the two reds pieced together. My kind of quilt making!

I love everything about this- especially the color combination.

This is not a flattering photo but I am thrilled to tell you all I ran my first half marathon today!! This was before I ran so at least I'm not all sweaty.
I usually keep this quilt related (I went to my favorite quilt show the day before the run and I'll be showing you photos of that show this week) but today I want to tell you that you can accomplish so much more than you think you can.
I NEVER thought I'd be doing this. I NEVER entertained a thought of running 13.1 miles until this summer. I'm here to tell you that you, and only you, make things happen!

I Love Vintage Quilts and Blocks!

Look at this lovely old quilt block Karen sent to me!! It is just one little block, but isn't it precious?! I think I am going to take it apart, set it again so it has a few seams and make a decorative pillow. Love the red and green!! Thanks again Karen.

Nicky asked me how I was coming with the bow tie quilt. Well, here is a photo of the vintage one seen at Sisters during the quilt show.

It looks like I have 21 of them made. Bonnie challenged us (me) into using this one as a leader/ender project. At this rate, I may have 40 of them done before July. A few test blocks were made using different cheddars, but I do plan on using solid cheddar for all of the rest.

La-la-la-la-Bom-Bom-Bom

Thought I'd show you the little bit I've been working on that is not BOM related.

This is a challenge. The center is to the left, the blue and half square triangles are attached. Somehow I am going to work in the green, black and orange. I'm falling for the autumn colors, can you tell. I'm having fun with it since it has been awhile since I've actually sat and sewn at my machine.

What I am going to try and do today at the machine is hem 2 pairs of my mom's pants. Pretty exciting huh? She is losing weight pretty fast and I'm trying to get her to wear some clothes that aren't 10 sizes too large! She won't wear these pants because they are too long....I offered...my fault.

I have been working on the first border of Beyond the Cherry Trees- just prep- nothing exciting yet, although I did make a very long bias stem:)

Oops! BOM time! This is block number 10!! it is October, the 10th month, so I would say I'm all caught up. This one looks a bit boring but all together it will fine. Look at the block below and see if you can answer a question...

This is Jan Patek's block. Does anybody know what the 8 thing is in the upper right hand corner? Neither hubby or I could figure it out so I left it off of mine. I am really curious though.
Anonymous (who are you?) said the 8 represents eternity. So far that is the best answer I've heard. I really think that it is. I still plan on leaving it off of my block though.

I'm not sure I mentioned it on this blog (I did on Get to Goal) but when I was sick last week I slipped and fell down the stairs while in a groggy state. I landed on the landing....I wish it had only been 4 stairs. Anyways I told my hubby that the wood he put down was beautiful but if I was dead I wouldn't be able to enjoy them at all. So I ordered these braided rugs the day after my fall and installed these 4 this afternoon. My back and tailbone are still very sore so I will let him install the other 8. I love them and know we will all be a bit safer too. Thank you to Libby at Plain & Simple for the recommendation of Country Wares. Service and communication was awesome! (her name was Lori too- an added bonus!)

BOM's

Here is my October block of the Bible BOM of Jan Patek's. Almost finished!! Let me preface my next rant with this: I've had the patterns for this but decided to do one a month this year because Jan resurrected it as a BOM. It was a good way for me to get it done rather slowly but with a time table. I didn't get a kit sent to me every month.

Rant ahead...... How do people afford a BOM?! I love Sue Spargo's work. She is creative and has brought a fresh and fun look to wool applique and embellishments. I got an email today announcing her 2012 BOM in wool. (I know that is expensive) Finished size 41x43. Your cost if you live in the US? $646.00. I can buy a lot of wool, thread and fabric with that kind of money. I guess I am too tight with a buck to pay that much. I can just about buy an inside cabin on a cruise ship for that price!
Does anybody else besides me think that is crazy?!

Beyond the Cherry Tree

Gee, I thought I'd be posting more often now that I am home for more than two days in a row. The problem? Nothing too exciting to post about!

I did finish block 23 of Beyond the Cherry Tree. The next section is a border although there is still 2 more blocks to do. I'll prep some leaves and berries, leaves and berries, leaves and berries, than be ready for the border! LOL Did I mention there are quite a few leaves and berries in the border? So my mom calls me at work this morning, which is fairly unusual. She asks, "Are you picking me up?" I respond, "What would I be picking you up for, Mom?" "To get my blood work done at the clinic."

I have no idea where that came from. She hasn't had to have any blood drawn for months. Oh joy!!

This block went to the Caribbean and back without every having a stitch put in it! Finally DONE! Now to move on to the September block.

This went to the Caribbean and back too!! A few more lines of quilting and it will be ready to bind. I'll move on to the bright version of the same block. I'd like to get them both done before the show in Houston so Ami can take them with her to sell.

I happen to spot this at the grocery store the other day. It has some terrific shops in this issue. None are close to me, but it is fun to see the variety.

I've been enjoying this book. As a matter of fact, this may have went to the Caribbean with me too! LOL

Beauty Secrets

I made another trip to the coast, this time with my hubby and our two grown kids. It was the relaxing trip I needed after taking my mom.
It just so happened we were driving right by the Benton County Museum where Bill has some of his collection of New York Beauties on display.

I love the use of cheddar on this one.

What a beautiful setting.

A simple and effective display.

I adore this amazing and humble quilt. I never noticed the red at the top. Is it patched?

Not one Bit Quilt Related!

I wanted to thank you who left comments of encouragement on my last post. The trip to the coast with my mom was one of the hardest things I've had to do. I haven't had to spend a lot of time at once with her and now that I have, I see the toll that Alzheimer's is taking on her. If I had to do that too many times it would be taking a toll on me too!

Look at this beautiful sunset! The day we arrived it was gorgeous.

The next morning my daughter arrived to spend the day with us. We walked to Pig n Pancake for breakfast and passed this window on the way. Do we really need bacon in chocolate?!

It is fun to behave like a kid every now and then.

My mom hardly slept at all and I had to sneak out at dark o'thirty to get a run in. Even then she was up- this morning she had locked herself outside without her teeth in. Yesterday I think she just stood outside and smoked until I came back- I don't think she knew how to use the room key (the one that looks like a credit card) Oh my! My mom never used to be such a chatter box either. Well, we both survived.....thank goodness.

I'd sure like to get some stitching done! Have a terrific weekend.

AAQI and then Some.

I told you I didn't get much done on my AAQI quilt. On the flight to Orlando I did get this block appliqued. I only ran into two problems. I clipped all my seams ahead of time so I wouldn't have to worry about my scissors being confiscated. There wasn't anything smooth about my applique. It looked pretty rough.

You can still see that isn't isn't really smooth, but I did a machine buttonhole in black to prim it up a bit. I think once it is quilted and washed it should be fine...I hope.

Problem number 2? My applique thread comes on a prewound bobbin, which happened to fall between my airline seat, or under it. I'm really not sure where it went, other then not with me! I did have an end, so I wrapped it around my needle package. Around and around and around......there is a lot of thread on that bobbin! I never did get to the end!!

My mom has been feeling a bit bummed because everyone has gone on vacation except her. (My hubby must not count) Her good friend and neighbor moved to a different complex so she has been really down. I am taking her to the Oregon coast today for a couple of days.

She loves the beach and is so excited!! When I called to make reservations I told them to give me a ground floor doors that open so if she cannot get out and walk much she can sit outside and enjoy the view. I'm pretty sure it won't be this clear when we are there, but I hope we can at least see the ocean. I have to admit I'm not as excited as she is. Conversation with her is difficult at best because of Alzheimer's. My daughter is coming over tomorrow for the day which should help. Think good thoughts for me please.

Vintage Quilts

One of our employees and his wife have had to move their mom into an assisted living. They let me know there were quilts in the house.

The colors on this one are BRIGHT yellow- dandelion yellow- although the photo doesn't show it. What you can't see is one end pretty much in tatters. The wife said her grandmother made it for her and it was on her bed growing up. Because the star doesn't go all the way to the border I told her I could easily fix it if it had sentimental value. Nope, none. These quilts will end up in an estate sale and the new owners will never know who made them.

Here is quilt number 2.

It has a wide age and variety of fabrics. The wine color of about 1900 is one of my favorites.

Most of this quilt has fabric from the 1930's.

It has a fun pieced back.

And it even has a bit of humble patchwork to it.

I had two more quilts to look at, one a Lone Star in silk that was disintegrating and another top and back that had been taken apart to replace the batting.

I went to her house today because she told me she had found more quilts. One was 2 sided and a little older than these, but lumpy and tied.

I don't have room for every single orphan quilt so I'm hoping they will find a home better then a garage rag.

This was a consolation prize from Paulette's friend Claire (no blog...yet) Aren't these hand dyed wools gorgeous?! A few of the reds came off the bolt because she said she wasn't too happy with her dye job. They are all lovely. Thank you Claire!!!

I think I made it through my huge stack of paperwork. Time to get the sewing room organized since I dropped everything in there after the cruise. I'm itching to get sewing again!!

Kathy, who went on the cruise with our group, sent me this beautiful photo. I love it! I need to get this framed!! It really captures a beautiful moment.
Can you tell I am still getting choked up about the cruise? One night I started crying at dinner I was so overwhelmed and thankful to be with Bonnie and the other beautiful women in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.
It has happened more then once after being home too!! My son told me to get a grip! LOL

I will have a quilty post in a day or two. I am still trying to get caught up on paperwork. I actually visited a few blogs this morning. As you can see Google reader said I had 256 unread blog posts......Please forgive me if I don't comment or read each one! hahaha

I did a little purging too, please don't take it personal.

Neither of us felt we could pass up the opportunity. She was just as wonderful and pleasant as I thought she would be. Thanks Karen for the early morning coffee!!

I would be remiss if I didn't say that Jim West at Sew many Places did an amazing job setting up this cruise. If you ever need some help with travel plans he would be the one to call. I know this won't be my last contact with him!!

Here's a little vintage block I quilted and bound to make a doll size quilt.
This past week I've been trying to gather a few bits of handiwork to take on the cruise. This WAS one of them...oops...finished already...

Something doesn't feel quite right about working with wool on a cruise but that is what I will be doing. I've been prepping the remaining Bible blocks this week.

Vintage Quilt Tops

I've had these photos downloaded to blogger for awhile and just about forgot about them. Here are two more quilt tops I bought during the Coburg Quilt Show.

This one doesn't look like much...

But it has some awesome fabric in it. I love the wine colored squiggleys the best!!

Here is a terrific string quilt. It has a huge variety and a wide span of fabric in this one.

Black mourning prints, indigo and shirtings all from about 1900 to a wonderful splashy floral from a bit later.

I love the partial blocks.

There is quite a bit of the bold black and white print throughout this quilt. I wish I could tell what it is supposed to be.

I took this quilt top apart and have these blocks to show for it. I will probably need to take these apart too and resew them so they have a seam allowance and are all the same size.

Scandinavian Festival

I saw an ad for this 4 day event several months ago and made sure I wrote it on my calender. Friday I met my kids in Junction City for the day to check it out.

Where else can you see some beautiful costumes? Some were very authentic.

Here was a grandpa and his granddaughter. They didn't mind one bit that I asked to take their photo. They were in a play later that evening and also danced.

Where else can you see Vikings walking around or just enjoying their lunch in a bit of shade?

We couldn't help but have a little fun ourselves.

I found this wonderful shop in Junction City called Remains of the Day. Will you just look at the wall of remnants! Most were decorator fabric but they came in all weights. Thsi was only part of what they had!

There were also shelves and shelves of trims.

If I am ever in that area again I'll make sure i give myself some extra time in this shop.

Blind Man's Fancy

Woo-Hoo! I think it took me forever to get the final 2 flying geese borders and the three plain strips....oh well, it is done now and I couldn't be more thrilled!
My quilt top measures 79"x62".

There's nothing perfect about my piecing but I love the array of fabric.

Here is the original quilt I was inspired by. It is in a small booklet called Patterns Of Time: Quilts of Western New York by Lynn T. Hoffman.

For those of you that thought pieces of my blocks were turned the "wrong" way. The original has no right or wrong, so neither does mine.

This block was a really hard one for me to figure out in Electric Quilt, but one of my readers found the directions on Beth's Quilt Doctor blog. Scroll to the bottom to find Blind Man's Fancy. She has a lot of other freebies too that you may as well look at while you're there. Thanks Beth!!

Weekend in the Mountains

Hubby hasn't had a weekend off since June so we threw a few things in the little pickup and left town on Friday for a getaway.

Here's a fun lake way up in the mountains that we like to go to.

The last 30 minutes is a lot of climbing. We leave the junipers behind and get into beautiful tall pine trees.

We caught a few fish but slept little. I'm not used to the hard ground- top that off with a little sunburn and aching muscles from an aerobics class.....well, you get the idea. None of that kept Porter from napping...

I had really good intentions of doing a little hand quilting on a vintage block I thought I'd turn into a little quilt. Can you tell what important thing is missing?

Vintage Quilt Finds & Book Winner

Here is one of the quilt tops I bought from Laurie. It is small and may have been a part of a larger top. I love the fabric and it has so much character.

Here's a close up of the terrific fabric. Other then dirty the hand piecing is pretty good and I plan on keeping this one together and hand quilting it.

This is a great print!

See the repair? There is several of them throughout the top and there are a few holes that I will repair in the same manner.

Is this the best?! A few days after our Tree to Tree adventure I realized I had lost my necklace that I purchased from Pam. So I ordered a new one- I loved it and couldn't imagine NOT having my lovely necklace. I told her what mine had been and told her that I'm sure I'd love whatever she wanted to make me. This is what she did!!

And she added the charms that I had on my old one, but added my initial. If you are looking for a lovely and personal necklace for yourself or someone else please consider purchasing from Pam.

Coburg Quilt Show

One of my blog readers let me know her and a friend (both named Lori- all spelled differently though) were going to be vending in Coburg at the quilt show. Although it is a fairly long drive it was a beautiful day and I thought I might as well go. I wasn't disappointed.

Here is one section of Laurie's "booth". Later in the week I'll show you what I purchased. I could have bought a lot more;)

The quilts were great! I was drawn to some that had a lot of tiny pieces!!

Mary Lou Weidman & Melanie McFarland have a fun new book out!! The first time I saw Mary Lou was in 2000 at the Sisters Quilt Show. What a fun and personable woman. Her quilts were amazing and told such great stories. Although I don't make a lot of quilts like hers I was a fan instantly!! Here is my version of a story quilt I worked on for a year after seeing her in Sisters. This was a graduation quilt I made my daughter. You can read it about it on this blog post.

I have to admit my letters need some work. Because there isn't actually measurements given I had a little problem. I needed a bit more contrast on my first letter too, but that is operator error. Can you read the word?

Hoochy Mama Flying Geese

The "Hoochy mama" method for making these last two blocks was fairly easy. I have to admit I am a visual learner and learn by watching someone else do something step by step. I used the book, step by step, and made these blocks with no problems. It was clear and concise. Oh, and FUN too!!

Isn't this quilt gorgeous?! It was one of the more fancy quilts at the antique quilts booth at Sisters. I'd love to own it but it was a little out of my budget.

I love the unusual baskets and the super size blocks!!

Beyond the Cherry Tree Blocks

I'm all caught up this quilt!! Woo-Hoo!

Block 16 grapes finally finished. This is going to be my center block.

Block 21. After seeing Wendy's block yesterday I realized I forgot to applique the ribbon/handle/decoration on the urn. The original color was dark green but I don't think I would have been able to see it so I opted for purple. I'm not thrilled with it, but OK with it. Before appliqueing that on, I could see a frowning face, now I see a frowning face with glasses!! LOL

Block 22- whew! An easy one!!

Now that I'm caught up on those I am ready to start making the flying geese for the Blind Man's Fancy border. Jo Morton let me know that the dye lot is fine, it was printed in two different colors!! I tell ya' they look the same online.

Sisters Antique Quilt and Winner!

Here is my purchase from Sisters on the day of the show. It is a top with a mix of fabric, predominately double pink and Lancaster blue.

The border print really caught my eye.

I can't seem to find much information on this border as far as what it is called and approximate year. Any clues on that would be appreciated.

Do you see the outermost border? It looks like drapery fabric and I'm sure it was added on at a later date.

I need to try and clean it up a bit but the piecing is very good and it lays nice and flat. It's got great fabric in it.

I finished the borders last night!! All that piecing, geez, no wonder it took me so long! LOL I looked at some antique two color Irish chains and liked this simple border treatment the best.
Now, you may or may not notice that there is a mistake. I saw it as I was getting ready to take a photo. I'm just letting you know that I know it's there.

The two fabrics I used were red Moda bella solid Christmas red and Kona natural. The strips I used to make the blocks were cut at 1 1/2" . The border strips were cut at 2 1/2". The quilt measures about 85"x89".

The open "white" spaces are only about 4" so I don't think I'll be doing any wreaths or fancy work in there. At this point I plan on quilting it myself- probably with crosshatching.

My first thought is to put muslin on the back but I may find a nice red and white print, possibly some type of toile. Sometimes the quilting looks better with a busy print on the back. If I do decide to send it out a print on the back is a sure thing. Any thoughts on that?

Bible Block & Dye Lots

I love this block. I can almost hear Moses yelling at the people, "What have you been doing down here?!" Throwing his hands up in frustration.

On another note.......

I had a small piece of this fabric and found out it was an older Jo Morton print. I wanted to use it in the Blind Man's Fancy quilt border. Because it was older I wasn't going to pursue it too hardily.

With a few clicks of the mouse I found plenty of it at the Fabric Shack.

The only problem was this is what came in the mail. I'm positive I didn't put yellow in the shopping cart, but because it is such a terrific print I am keeping it. When I went back online to the Fabric Shack they only showed 1/2 yard of the color I wanted.

With a few more clicks of the mouse I found it at Debbie's Quilt Shop. It arrived in lightning speed!!

And this is what I got- perfect......

Who knew two dye lots could be so completely different!? As you can see the newer one is definitely more red then the piece I had. Aargh!!

I'll make as many flying geese as I can and hope I can make them all out of the new piece. The two pinks will be the other part of the flying geese.

I have 4 more blocks to make on the red and white, then I'm back to this border...I must stay focused, I must stay focused......red and white, red and white......

Favorites

It is always hard to choose a favorite from the show since there are so many wonderful quilts.

This one is done by Tonye Belinda Phillips and totally made me crack up!! She followed the swirls on the border with her quilting and it looked fantastic.

Here's another one of Tonye's with lots of tiny baskets.

Sue Spargo's work is lovely as usual. Tonye and Sue are collaborating! Can you imagine?!

I've always admired Mary Lou Weidman style quilts.

Great use of fabric. I love the bottom border.

Here is Randy with her "Everything" quilt. As I am scrounging through my scraps and bins I am holding out any little misc blocks and pieces so I can make one like this. I think it turned out fantastic!! This quilt did not sell at the show so if anybody is interested contact her or I can put you in touch with her.

Inspiration in July

The yearly Sisters Outdoor quilt show is a great place to get inspiration and be around lots of quilters- thousands of quilters.
No matter how many times I've gone I enjoy myself again every year.

I also take plenty of photos every year. This side of the Stithin' Post always hosts the employee challenge. It is a popular photo op.

Here is another one of my favorite photo ops.

I showed you a photo of Pam and I but here is another one we took with Kathy Doughty. Pam took a class with her and I used the opportunity to meet them both.
I am a follower of Kathy's blog, Material Obsessions. She seems to be a wonderful teacher and encourager. Her quilt shop does a lot of classes and although they aren't the type of quilts I make I am very intrigued, inspired and fascinated by them.

Kathy brought a little Australian entourage with her and some of their quilts. What fun and unusual quilts. Next to the antique quilts this was my favorite special display at the show.

Did You Guess the Pattern?

After seeing the checkerboard blocks did you guess I was doing a triple Irish chain? I have 4 rows to add and a possible border. I'm bummed I didn't get further, but am happy I made it this far.
I'm going to get packed up and head for home. Bonnie and Randy will continue to sew and I'll go back to work. This was a terrific place to re-energize, relax, sew & laugh with my good friends.

Speaking of friends, we talked Randy into starting a blog this week!! You will love the quilts she makes and she has the most adorable grandson and golden retriever named Max. Her thumbnail is in my sidebar- Barrister's Block. Please drop by and tell her I sent you. I'm trying to get on her good side so she'll invite me back next year! Sisters Week

Hello friends!! This week is the start of the classes leading up to the wonderful Outdoor quilt show in Sisters, Oregon. I am normally up in Sunriver sewing with friends but family first this year so I will be going on Friday. Unfortunately one of our employees is going on vacation next week so my Sunriver sewathon will be cut short. I thought I'd take advantage of my open week and go to Sisters.
Of course I had to stop by the Stitchin' Post as they always do such a nice job at getting the store ready for a busy week. They also have a store at the high school were classes are and boy does that make it convenient- I shopped twice!! hahahaha
My main reason for going to Sisters was to meet Pam from Library Gal Quilts. She was taking a class with Kathy D of Material Obsession fame. Watch her blog for her wonderful red quilt.
I felt so comfortable with Pam right away! She was so friendly and warm and genuine. I hope this will not be the last time we meet.

Look at this super cute mug rug she gave to me. Isn't it fantastic?!

I also got to meet Carmen and her daughter, Amanda, (I sure hope that is their names) from Honey Run Quilt shop in Chico, CA. Carmen just got out of a class with Janet Bolton and her little art quilt was amazing!! I look forward to seeing it on her blog.

After I left Sisters I made my way to Bend to meet my friend Randy at Sew Many Quilts. They were having an open house before the craziness of the week set it.

Tomorrow I am meeting my blog friend Juliann who is coming for classes. Since I am not sewing with friends this week I do feel like I am missing out on the festivities. Maybe next year I'll take a class or two.

Blind Man's Fancy

I've actually been at the sewing machine a little every day trying to get this together. I finished the flying geese sashing yesterday and started assembling the top today. Here's the top half of the quilt....

And the bottom half. The right and left borders will have the same color flying geese. I have the pink picked out but that's it. I'm excited to get this far!!

I wanted to get most of that top together so I could start on a red and white quilt project. I've got my fabric and finally chose a pattern. The hard part is done! Piecing a 2 color quilt with 2 fabrics will be boring sewing so keep spurring me on OK? I'll let you know when I start.

I've been having fun, staying busy and enjoying the sun while its here. I made a quick trip to Moses Lake, WA to visit my dad. My brother from China who I only get to see once or twice a year has been to see us.

I made this little quilt for AAQI. I've been having a bit of internal turmoil watching my mom decline. Making a little quilt for The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative is my therapy. I'm sure you'll see it again once it is up for sale. The pattern is designed by Tonye Belinda Philips and is used with her permission.

I did a bit of home making and made some strawberry freezer jam. I don't eat much jam, but I had to taste test it and I say it is way better then store bought!!

Oh My!

Yesterday the mail lady delivered a box to my house. When I saw it later I wondered what the heck it was because I had not ordered anything. When I opened it inside a large ziploc bag I saw a quilt. My first thought was "Someone made a mistake and sent me something they should have sent to someone else!" Then I looked closer and gasped! It was for me!! The most adorable signature quilt was made for me!! I am so touched! I forgot to take a photo of the back but the label says "Thank you Lori we love your quilt alongs- 2011.

How sweet is that?! They also sent charms that matched their signature squares.

Thank you seems so inadequate, but what more can say. From the bottom of my heart thank you so much!

Spring has Finally Sprung

When I know I will be in Portland and have a few minutes to stop by the quilt shop, my main foray is the remnant section at Fabric Depot. Since most of the quilts I make are scrappy this works out perfect for me since generally there is nothing over a yard hanging. Instead of paying $7-10 dollars a yard I'll save my money and spend it on things like the trip to NYC. I don't really have room for tons of fabric anyway.

Look at these lovely little pieces of fabric I got. All together I bought 1 5/8 yards for less than $7. They are having an outdoor sale going on through out the summer and there are always bargains to be had. I didn't have time to head outside this day.
Now that the nicer weather is here I don't think I'll be blogging as much. I've been spending my time outdoors doing this:

I took a fun class with some other women and we were doing a practice race. I'm sure I'll never be the first one the break the tape! LOL I've really been enjoying myself and plan on doing more.

It is an excellent way for me to spend time with my kids too. When I turn 50 (In one year) I want to be active, healthy, feeling great and ready to conquer the next decade.
Obviously I still love to quilt and love to blog. I won't be answering comments like I have been in the past, unless you have a question or something that needs a return email. I'm sure you all will understand.

Here's another blog post with nothing cohesive going on!

I prepped a couple of wool applique pieces for when I have company this weekend. It is so easy to pick up and whip stitch down while visiting.

I did this practice piece a while ago and didn't plan on showing it. I want to put something in the center block of the Beyond the Cherry Tree. I have a poem I'd like to put on but my writing looks terrible. (you can see the start of the poem on the upside down part) Even when I am copying it with the writing underneath it still isn't pleasing to my eye. I do think I will use the simple scroll that is at the top of this practice piece and just sign my name and date. Any suggestions? Ideas? Hints? Tips?

This lovely card and wonderful red, white and blue reproduction fabric came from Dawn at
Collector With A Needle. I met her at the Russian Tea Room in NYC (for the red and white quilt exhibit) and almost directly afterwards she started her blog. I've enjoyed it so much. Thanks Dawn!

The truck was full of bark.Porter didn't want to miss an opportunity to go for a ride so he decided he would get comfy on top of it.

I mentioned we had been sprucing up the beds in preparation for my niece's graduation party. Company starts to arrive tomorrow, big party and open house on Friday, graduation ceremony on Saturday. It will be fun with lots of people, lots of food and lots of celebrations!!

Wow! I finally got one more thing out of my sewing room. I haven't had a lot of time this week, but I did manage to finish this little quilt. Are you all familiar with Quilts For Kids?
Here's their mission statement:

Quilts for Kids, Inc. transforms discontinued, unwanted and other fabrics into quilts that comfort children fighting a life battle with a serious illness such as cancer, AIDS, as well as children of abuse. Our goal is to link design centers and other fabric sources nationwide to their communities, so that children in need in those regions may be served.

You can request a kit and everything will come all cut and ready to sew. You add the batting and mail it back. It's a terrific program. I've done one or two quilts for them in the past and happen to see something about it again recently and thought I'd do another one. I loved the sweet dog fabric I got to work with.

One More Disaster

The disaster in MO is horrible! The weather has been a force to reckon with this past season!!
Not to make light of the devastating tornado, but I also think one touched down in my town, and to be more specific in my sewing room! I took photos as I made my way around the room.

My blind man's Fancy blocks laid out on the floor. I wanted to keep them where I could move them around if necessary. It seems that I only keep walking on them...

Is it any wonder I'm having a hard time getting anything done? I want to do it all! LOL

Hopefully I will have something to show soon and not just bits and pieces.

We are hosting my niece's graduation party here so we've been trying to spruce things up a little outside. I've been busier than usual so my blogging has taken a back seat. I expect it will be that way for a few more weeks.

I finished the cross stitch border of the Scandinavian Christmas Block 1. So now I need to make two more small cross stitch snowflakes to go with the churn dashes. Don't mind the wrinkles as I need to give it a good pressing.

I won these books and am ready to pass them along. One of them has the family genealogy of the Circuit Rider quilt. I know a lot of you might be interested in that since it was such a popular quilt. Let me know and I'll toss your name in a hat and draw on Monday.

I read this book and have been deeply affected. I know we all have causes that are close to our hearts but sometimes we have to take action. Sometimes that action doesn't take much time either. Heritage Stars Directions

I got such a positive response from my ZigZag quilt I thought I'd give you some easy instructions if you'd like to make it yourself. According to my EQ drawing it will measure 78 1/2" x 87". My quilt finished a little smaller but I do not prewash, but washed after it was quilted and bound.

First off, you can see the original at www.quiltindex.org and do a search for number 4A-7F-A4F.

You will need to make 86 6" sawtooth stars, or any other 6" block of your choice.

You will need to make 8 half star blocks. I drew it out in EQ and made a full block. There is no A and no large triangle. It will be a half block.

I like to oversize my setting triangles, but am going to give you the exact size. I would encourage you to make them a little larger and trim after the quilt is in strips.

Green and Pink: Cut 22- 9 3/4" squares then cut twice on the diagonal for 4 triangles. (you will use 85 triangles and have 3 leftover)

Cut- 5- 5 1/8" squares then cut once on the diagonal to make two triangles. (These are the smaller corner triangles)

You will assemble the quilt by vertical rows. Use the diagram as a guide if needed to put the colors in the correct position. Make 9 rows, then attach the rows together.

2011 Spring Bloggers Quilt Festival

Here's my addition to Amy's spring bloggers quilt festival.

I saw the antique quilt in a museum and knew I must make one like it. It took me some time to make all the little star blocks (6") but it was worth it. Kathy, my machine quilter, did an awesome job of quilting it. This is one of my favorite quilts.

The original quilt resides in New Jersey.

Bible BOM

I finished my May block of Jan Patek's Bible quilt. I didn't notice until I saw the photo on my computer that one of my fish is floating! oops! And my dove seems to be floating in the air on top of the ark. That's my prim!

If you remember last month Eve's color blended in with the background so much that she was nearly invisible. I couldn't let that go, so changed her completely.

All my other projects are going kind of slow. I'm trying to get the garden prepped and ready to plant some veggies. We finally had a day or two of decent weather.

Roll Roll Cotton Boll

I finally got the binding on Roll Roll Cotton Boll, the mystery quilt of Bonnie Hunter's from last November. I had Kathy, my machine quilter to do an all over quilt pattern, since it wasn't going to be the focus of this quilt . It is on my bed right now and I love it. Can you believe this is the largest quilt I've ever made?! Yep, the little doll quilts sure have appeal, but it is fun to have a big one!!

I had purchased a panel with the coffee "blocks" some time ago. I needed lots of coffee to keep up with Bonnie on this one so I thought it was appropriate to put them on the back.

Carol put a call out for patriotic pillowcases. Can you believe I've never made a pillowcase before today? Here are the two I'm sending. That was a lot of fun and didn't take a huge amount of time. Maybe you'd like to help?

Linda, at Quilts in the Barn is collecting signature blocks for a raffle quilt. All the money raised will be donated to Breast Cancer Research. I made mine today but forgot to take a photo. Linda and her friends raised over $10,000 last year for this cause! So many "small" things can turn into something huge! Check it out if you would like to make a signature block.

I made these recently- actually I think I had the centers made for a few at least, but I finished all six.....

Which will join these six. Now onto making the flying geese sashing. Do you have a favorite method? Does your method depend on the finish size you want to make. These are fairly big so I plan on doing them traditionally, with two triangles and a rectangle. The original antique quilt had 4 patches as the cornerstones. This is a busy quilt and I love it!

I've rotated to my next hand project which is new! Ranette generously sent me her
Scandinavian Christmas pattern when she was done with it. It was a whole lot smaller than I thought so she has given me a lot of good tips too. My grandfather is from Denmark so I love all things Scandinavian, including this precious wallhanging! This is block one. I need to make a few more little churn dashes that go between the blocks. They are so cute I couldn't help but forge ahead and make one.

Cathy B from Big Lake Quilter sent me this adorable bag. It has a little velcro closure- it is perfect for keeping my thimble, thread, small scissors and glasses in. It is also a perfect reminder that spring really will come soon. Thank you Cathy!

PS I have made a few cosmetic changes to my blog. If you experience any difficulties with it loading or anything else, please let me know. There are a few blogs I have trouble with and it can be very frustrating, especially if you have limited time.

Land of the Free

Along with my Leftovers quilt I got a chance to take a photo of this quilt. My Land of the Free by
Piece O Cake Designs. I love this quilt and can't wait to hang it up!!

Here's a closer look at the machine quilting done by my friend in Ohio, Kathy McCarty. I keep trying to get her to start a blog. She does wonderful piecing along with quilting and is always good for inspiration.

"Leftovers" block pattern

I had quite a few people ask for the pattern on this block so I thought I would post it here.
Several people asked the name of the block and I do not know. I looked in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia and didn't find one just like it so I'll venture to say something like a Four Patch Variation. Doesn't sound too exciting does it?!
Janet, who left the first comment let me know it is a double four patch. It sounds kind of obvious now!
