Totality 2017

I started by paper piecing the center ring

Then I paper pieced the outer ring.
I then appliqued the center ring to the outer ring.
The appliqued the center blue to the first ring.

The appliqued the "window" on top of the rings!
I'll probably do a bit of machine and hand quilting on it. The block is 20".

Considering this isn't my usual "humble" work, I'm pretty pleased with it.

I can totally get into this space/solar/star stuff!

On another note, some teens thought it would be great fun to drop fireworks into ravines in our beautiful Oregon forest.
The view from Dog Mountain- May 2017
Cascade Locks- September 2015- amazing half marathon I ran.

This beautiful area is no longer the lovely forest I used to hike in or run in.

Certainly we need to manage our forests better, but we also need education. Our kids need to have respect for the world we live in. I'm so heartbroken and sad.

  1. Love the whole idea of your eclipse piece and can't wait to see the quilting you add.

Seeing all of these fires on the news just gives me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. And to be started by careless people! I'm at a loss for words!

  6. I'm sad right along with you. Beautiful quilting. Right now it is cooler than normal and we also need rain, and others are getting more than they need. Picking colors for your quilt along.

  7. Your Eclipse block is fabulous! All those beautiful spikey points look perfect :0)
The tremendous power of those flames fills me with awe. So much destruction - so fast! But, it will be beautiful again - one day - filled with fire weed and the fresh green of young, new trees.

  8. I am intrigued by your "Totality" work as applique is not a method I associate myself with. LOL Your 20" block looks wonderful! I am so sorry about the fires in Oregon. I am speechless yet have my suspicions of what is to come in the future. Regretfully, I am afraid things won't get better as time goes by. Please stay safe and out of harms way.

  9. Your "Totality" block is sensational! I have been watching the fires and worrying about you! Education is vital for saving our environment and our teens! So sad to see your area go from such elation (the total eclipse) to this devastation. I always feel so bad for the wildlife as well as the trees. I pray that you will all stay safe.

  10. That eclipse block has captured my imagination! It is wonderful, Lori!
Oh, those fires break my heart! Having driven through that area a few times, I remember the beauty. Seeing it in flames is devastating! How have we failed to teach youth to consider the results of their actions?

  11. I am so sorry about your beautiful forest. So much destroyed by a few matches. 54 years ago I lived near St. Helena Mountain in Lake County. The drive over the curvy mountain roads was beautiful because all the trees made a canopy over the road. Then there was a devastating fire also. The trees came back eventually, maybe ten years. But the canopy is just barely back and look how long ago that was. I hope that your trees will come back as quick as they can.

  12. It seems so often that people (kids & adults) act without thinking of the consequences. We all need to remember that for every action there is a reaction. So very sad for your beautiful forest and very sad for the boys that didn't give it a thought about the fireworks. They will have to live with this for the rest of their lives.

  19. I think your blocks look very good. And I think it is a good representation of your experience with the eclipse. I should do more pieces that would be considered a memory quilt.

  21. Wonderful block interpretation of the eclipse! It's so sad to see the devastation from those fires. I just can't imagine what that's like. It will take years for the forests to recover and renew not to mention the animals . . . it's heart wrenching.

This summer in Provence, we've had many fires and thousands of hectares burnt...For the majority, they were criminal fires.....why human being is so stupid and selfish ??

  25. Your block is awesome - you are going to have to change the name of your blog! Nothing humble about that block! The pictures of the fires are so shocking to look at. Such a terrible thing. If only Hurricane Irma could send you some rain!

  26. Your block is beautiful!
I drove thru where the fires are this summer and it was the first time I'd been to that part of the country. It's so sad to see it in flames. The destruction is hard to comprehend. Hope they get it under control soon.

  27. Love your block and the size of it! So sad about the fires. Some youngsters out for a bit of fun, dont realise the harm they can do. I cant imagine any of my grandchildren doing that, as they have been brought up to respect the bush, and everything in general!

  28. No respect whatsoever nowadays for anything. Hope they are out or under control. Your block is beautiful. Fantastic job.

  29. Love your block! So sad that children are raised to have zero respect for anyone or anything. Heartbreaking to see such a beautiful place burning out of control, the poor wildlife trying to escape that inferno! Horrendous!
