I got permission to share my friend, Susan McDermott's, wonderful personal quilts.
"Over There" was a commemorative quilt to honor her Father- In- Law who served in WWI.
The center of the quilt is the flag families put in their windows to show they had a son in the war. Owen’s father was raised in an orphanage so no one had a flag for him. I made it to commemorate 100 years since America entered the war, 1917.
The backing is just amazing with photos and memories of Frank McDermott.
I love everything about this quilt!
Susan showed me the next quilt last summer and I asked her if I could share it on my blog and she said when she got a better photo. Well, I finally got that photo!
Each green box represents a year. Each black square represents one mountain hiked, one of the 48 4000 footers in NH.
The two red patches are what Owen and I earned from the AMC for our efforts.
The top says McDermott, right....New Hampshire, bottom....1987-2015 and the left....4000 footers.
On the back I have a copy of our application to the AMC to be admitted in to the 4000 footers club. Just received certificates which will also go on the back.
It took a long time to make this quilt and a long time to hike the mountains.....29 years.
Susan did the wonderful quilting as well.
Great job on the hikes, Susan and Owen and the lovely commemorative quilt, Susan. Thanks for letting me share them on my blog.

ReplyDeleteTwo fabulous quilts ! Thank you for sharing and.... Bravo Susan !!
ReplyDeleteTwo wonderful commemorative quilts! The top one stirs emotions, the second one stirs memories. When my daughter and her hubby lived in NH, he had a goal to earn one of those 4000 Footers patches. One of the times I was back there visiting, her hubby went hiking for a few days to knock off a couple of the peaks. But we got a call a couple of days in--he had a badly sprained ankle, and had barely made it to a spot where she could actually drive up the mountain to pick him up.
ReplyDeleteAlas, they didn't live there long enough for him to accomplish his goal.
Thanks for sharing! I have also hiked the 4,000 footers of New Hampshire and know what an achievement that is! It took me many years as well, partly because I was not living in New England for many years.
