I love the subtle changes of the background muslin I used. I think it instantly ages my reproductions.
I wanted the quilting to be traditional but free flowing. Sharon Tucker is so good at doing overlays and sending them to me to try and capture what I'm looking for.

ReplyDeleteI had that problem with reds in a log cabin quilt I made many years ago but only washed recently. It took washing it three times with multiple color catchers but ALL of the red blotches and pink tinge came out if the lights. I would definitely recommend washing it again with color catchers before trying other things.

ReplyDeleteIf the bleed isn’t gone after a second wash, try the dawn dish soap. I had a quilt bleed that did not come out after two washes with color catchers. I found a blog that spoke about how to remove with the dawn. I was very hesitant to try it because it said to put in very hot water! Sounded counterintuitive to me, so I thought about it long and hard. I finally decided I had nothing to lose, so I tried it. It worked! You would never know there had been a fabric bleed. I got my info from suzyquilts.com. I also did find the dawn pure and gentle soap, but have read other places that the blue dawn works also.

ReplyDeleteI put the Dawn right in the washer with the color catchers. It worked for me. Your quilt turned out so nicely. I wish mine was quilted - maybe someday soon.

ReplyDeleteIt's a gorgeous quilt even with the bit of pink tinge. If you have Synthrapol it would be worth trying some of that along with the color catchers the next time you wash it. Haven't tried the dawn method in the washing machine since mine is a front-loader and needs a low sudsing soap/detergent. I've had very good luck with prewashing all my deep color fabrics with Synthrapol, and have used it for years.

ReplyDeleteIt's so pretty! I love the quilting too - it sets off the applique perfectly! How frusterating to have some dye run - I hope it comes out in the next wash.
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty and it was fun to quilt it! I have a red that bled and I tried the dawn. Just rub a little blue dawn around the red bleeding fabric and around the tinged areas. Rewash with dye catchers. I don't recall using super hot water. I have both synthopol and retaine but you can't use them with my kind of washing machine.
ReplyDeleteI have have/had a few white-on-white or mostly white background prints that took on color in spite of color catchers. It has never come out but I've never tried anything else either. What I find interesting is that it's only certain whites that hang onto the extra dye and never let it go.

ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful, Lori! It does have an aged look to it! Since there's so many comments about the red bleed, I'm curious if you all washed your fabric before cutting and sewing? It sounds like you may have a few solutions to get the pink out of the quilt. Best of luck!

ReplyDeleteSo sorry about the bleeding, that is really starting to get old isn't it? LOVE this quilt! It's such a beautiful rendition. I was so very tempted to start this same quilt, but was afraid I wouldn't have stickitis. You did so good!!
