Favorite Quilt From Aurora Colony Quilt Show

But first..... Thank you for all the well wishes on the race. We needed it!

Because I live on the dry side of the mountain (High desert) we don't get a lot of color and the trip to Hood River was amazing!

Because I would be leaving the start line at 5:15AM I wanted to see the route I'd be walking.

Too bad I passed this the following morning  in the dark with heavy rain!!

The views were amazing as were the colors! Lots of fruit orchards and wineries in the area.

Passed this brilliant red shrub on our walk to dinner.

We had rain, wind, lightning and thunder, but also lots of rainbows throughout race day.

Here is our team shortly before my early morning start.

Thankfully I didn't have to travel on sleet/snow/hail, but the woman I passed off to did. It was brutal!

Despite the inclimate weather I did the best ever at "race walking" and our team did very well with an overall average pace of 13:16 per mile.

Now, back to my favorite quilt at the Aurora show.

The owner calls it Potpourri.

It is sweet, humble and charming rolled into one terrifically crazy styled quilt!

I would estimate this quilt to have been made about 1900 not 1875 as the label indicates. I have no clue where the owners got the idea this had anything to do with a maple star block.

It was charming no matter what we call it!

Have a super fantastic week!

  1. Funny, before reading your last lines, I scrolled back up to see if I missed something "maple star-ish." An extraordinary quilt!

  8. Wow, what a wonderful site those rainbows must have been. I grew up in the high desert so I know exactly what you mean about no color changes...it is breathtakingly beautiful so see all the colors nature can generate, isn't it. I LOVE Potpourri, the limited color palate and the way the alternate blocks have three rows of whatever....amazing!

  9. You're right - that quilt is so charming. And my goodness those views were amazing! We haven't gotten the great colors this year that we usually do. Too many high wind days. But I do have a beautiful paper birch outside my office window that is golden - until this afternoon when we expect 50 mph winds. Goodbye leaves!

  11. I too scrolled back, looking for Maple Star and HSTs. Maybe that and the date were small mistakes by the person making the label? The quilt itself is wonderful. Did you notice the indigo or cadet blue Christmas fabric/ holly leaves in the first closeup?! How inventive t have blue Xmas fabric, I d love to have a repro of that.

Your race looks challenging and not so much fun in dark awful weather, but you did great. The Autumn landscapes are so beautiful there.

  14. What a wonderful quilt. The maker turned something simple into an intricate well-executed design. Her color sense is spot on. Your photos are so beautiful. What dedication to race in that kind of weather.

  15. Beautiful time of year for your race-walk! Brr... sounds a little chilly though.:) Love the spunky looking quilt. Other than the fabric, it could totally have been made in our day and age!

  17. Gorgeous view. The rainbow was outstanding. I just love that antique quilt. Are you going to make it as a sew along? Really like the polka dot fabric, actually like all the fabrics. Thank you for sharing. Are you coming to the IQS this year?

This quilt is fabulous ! The fabrics are beautiful and the mix between 2 styles (traditional and a little bit "modern") is amazing !
