A Quilt Legacy

Many have heard the news of the passing of quilt legend (she'd get a kick out of that, wouldn't she??!!) Gwen Marston. Her influence on the quilt world was huge.

She was funny, kind and so expressive. I was honored to have taken several classes and listened to a few of her lectures.

This was the last one I attended at The Stitchin' Post in Sisters, Oregon.

I can only imagine what she is saying here!!
These next few quilts are from a string class I took.

The next 2 photos were from the Quilt Museum in LaConner.

The next few quilts were started in a class with Gwen or inspired by Gwen.
She gave us permission to change up borders!

And make our own patterns. (Above and below)

Our fun Gweenie Inspired Round Robin on Humble Quilts!
My friend Barb was a friend of Gwen's and influenced her lectures and classes a lot. Make a unique quilt and make it your own!

  1. So sad. Gwen was an important influence in my early quilting. I attended a couple of her retreats post-Beaver Island. I appreciated her respect for quilt history while liberating traditions. She always made me feel like a good friend whenever our paths crossed. She will be missed.

  11. Thirty+ years ago I was a new-ish quilter. I met Gwen at the NQA show in PA. What a treat. Her love of old quilts, her encouragement that the world does not end when your 1/4" seam isn't a 1/4" and watching her evolution as a quilt maker. Gifts that she has shared.

  14. I took my first class from Gwen at a state park in Washington, followed by several years at her Beaver Island retreats. Such a joy to learn from her. Gwen has left an indelible mark on the quilting world.

  15. I got a notice on facebook about her passing, but would like to thank you for this post honoring Gwen! I didn't have the opportunity to meet her, but I did buy one of her books and admired her work very much. Love your quilts, Laurie! I'm glad you have such wonderful memories of her.

  16. So sad of hear of the passing of such a kind and gentle lady. We were lucky enough to have her come and teach in New Zealand, and the two little quilts I made in her class are on my sewing room wall.
I only have about 5 of her books, but must look at them again for our String Piecing sew-a-long.
    A lovely tribute Lori.

  17. I heard this sad news from my friend Lucy (Quilting with the Past blog and lucyvds on IG) in the morning a few days ago. I have a few of Gwen's books but unfortunately never got the chance to meet her in person. However Lucy (who also attended one of her retreats) over the years shared some of Gwen's wisdom and wise words with me, mostly about quilts but words that also apply to life in general. So she lives on in those she inspired.
