New England Quilt Museum Visit!

My last trip to New England  was specifically to go to the New England Quilt Museum and see the special exhibit Barb Veddar curated called "Personal Expression: The Legacy of Gwen Marston"

I snapped photos of the quilts I recognized and by friends I know with quilts in the exhibot.

Funny story to share. We visited my friend, Paula, long time quilter in New England and she told us that a group associated with Harvard had taken a class learning about the history of quilts and that group would be attending the quilt museum the same day we were going. We saw the group right away and Pam was giving them a tour of the exhibits. Apparently Paula had told one of them we were going to be at the museum at the same time and she asked us if we were the 2 women from the west coast. Yes we are! We chatted niceties and moved on.

Pam knew I had quilts in the Gwen Marston exhibit and asked nonchalantly if I had taken a class with Gwen. Well, yes, I have taken several classes and lectures with her. 

"Oh, wonderful, would you mind speaking with the ladies for a few minutes about your experience with Gwen?"

I was still comprehending what she was asking when my friend Laurie pipes in and says "Sure she will!" lolol

I would have said yes anyway. 

 

They were very attentive and kind. 

It was fun and I feel very fortunate to have quilts in the exhibit and that I was able to go see them before the end of the year.

Guest Curator, Barb Vedder honors the legacy of Gwen Marston (1936 – 2019) with a selection of quilts directly inspired by her innovative techniques. An icon in the quilt world, Marston was a beloved teacher and internationally renowned artist for more than three decades. Her method of “liberated quiltmaking” inspired countless students to explore their own creative intuition and encouraged an entire generation of quiltmakers to put aside templates and patterns to create original quilts with their own unique personal meaning.

Not sure if I'll be able to see it in person, but I hope to! Have a great weekend! Sewing is on my agenda!!

 

New England Quilt Musem

I was fortunate to be able to visit the New England Quilt Museum in 2022 and 2023. Lowell, MA is a town with so much history. The west coast is young and I do appreciate the differences in areas of the USA. The above photo is now apartments but used to be a fabric mill.

Marston Retrospective Exhibit

I am honored to have 2 quilts in this exhibit, both started in a class with Gwen Marston in Sisters, Oregon. 

The quilts were required to have hanging sleeves, so I had to do a little mandatory boring sewing. haha

When attaching the sleeve on a completed quilt it is important to not go through all layers. 

The quilts are packed up and ready to go across the country! Maybe I'll get see this exhibit in person. 

It has been a great week,. I got out to hike with my son very early before it warmed up- it was lovely. 

I did get some strange bug bites on my ankles the day before our hike We normally do not have mosquitos so I'm not sure what it is from. My ankles are so swollen and itchy! It is really awful. I've resorted to taking some benadryl. It is super annoying!

Fun on Friday!

I showed this old magazine page on my facebook group after the Sisters show. It's an oldie but goodie from Gwen Marston. I wouldn't recognize it as one of hers blocks. 

This week Angie sent me a remake!! She says she likes to try new techniques and like Gwen! How stinkin' cute is this?? Thank you sweet friend. 

Here's another oldie from Gwen Marston- 1992. Just sharing for fun- not expecting a remake!! LOL 

Here is Katlyn's finished top! Her grandmother, Alice Asleson tells me this project all started as a memory to her disabled grandfather. "I believe this is about the 16th year that we deliver red,white and blue quilts on Veterans Day and have had enough quilts for all the patients at the VA Hospital in Middleton, WI and the Emergency Room patients."

Way to go quilters! Thank you veterans!!

Look what I saw on an early morning walk yesterday! I wish my photos were better.

I believe this is a great horned owl, which is the most commonly seen owl in Oregon. 

This is the only book I have left. Thank you all for your support! Rhonda and Roxanne, I'm waiting for your mailing address so I can figure the postage. 

I have no big plans for the weekend, but maybe a little prep for next weekend's backpacking trip!

A Quilt Legacy

Many have heard the news of the passing of quilt legend (she'd get a kick out of that, wouldn't she??!!) Gwen Marston. Her influence on the quilt world was huge. 

She was funny, kind and so expressive. I was honored to have taken several classes and listened to a few of her lectures. 

This was the last one I attended at The Stitchin' Post in Sisters, Oregon.

I can only imagine what she is saying here!!
