Land That I Love Finale!

The finished quilt as shown will be approx 18x26.5

Many of you were concerned about the busy prints and fabrics. I chose blue (like the antique) which does calm it down a bit.   (do you find my error humble design element? I only noticed after it was entirely completed.

Choose your fabric and cut:

(2) 6 1/2" squares

The following are a tad oversized to give you some wiggle room for trimming after getting your top together. 

(2) 5 1/2" squares then cut once on the diagonal to make 4 triangles. These will be your 4 corners. 

Cut (2) 10" squares, then cut twice on the diagonal for 8 triangles. (we will only use 6) 

Lay out your pieces as shown. We will assemble them on the diagonal, row by row. When attaching rows to each other I use a pin right at the seams so the blocks will be lined up. Once you get the top together make sure to admire your lovely creation!

Layer your top, batting and backing to prepare for quilting. (if you are a new quilter and don't really know what that means ask, please!) 

I machine quilted the long seams in the ditch  and hand quilted the rest. 

I hand quilted one direction about 3/4" apart. 

I used a red print for the binding.

Here is the vintage quilt I used for inspiration.  You can see the backing was folded over to the front to bind.

Land That I Love Part 4

 Happy Friday!

Today we are going to cut (6) 2 3/8 squares, then cut them on the diagonal for 12 triangles. I used lights/mediums and darks.

Then we will cut (6) 3 7/8 squares, then cut them on the diagonal for 12 larger triangles. Most of mine are mediums/darks. 

This is my favorite ruler for cutting my small scraps into usable pieces, especially in a small quilt and I want most of my HST to be different. 

You should have (12) 2" squares remaining that you didn't use in your little blocks we made last week.

Lay out your smaller triangles with 1 2" square as in the above photo. 

Sew one triangle to the side of the square, press.

Then sew the other small triangle to the other side of the square. 

Then sew that unit to the larger triangle. Make 12 of these units. 

My prints and colors are a mixed bag, very scrappy and similar  to the original.

Lay them out like above and sew them together. Make 6 blocks. Your blocks should measure 6 1/2". 

 TADA! Stand back and admire your work!

Land That I Love Part 3

We will sew the half square triangles and 2" squares to make this block. Lights/mediums/darks really don't matter much although I did try and keep my darker prints in the half square triangles pointing to each other.  Make 12 of these little blocks. Tada! Admire your handiwork!

Land That I Love Part 2

For part 2 you will need to cut 36 2" squares. If you want your quilt fairly calm use mostly lights. Feel free to use lights, mediums or darks if you want to go crazy scappy!

That was simple! yay!

Land That I Love Part 1

We will start by making some half square triangles. 

Using your favorite method make 24 half square triangles that will finish at 1 1/2" 

If you make them a tad oversized, then trim, you will be trimming them to 2".

I want my quilt like the antique and the blocks are very scrappy. I opted to make mine one at a time so they would all be different. You can use light/dark or light/mediums or dark/mediums or a little of all!

Funny, I was just looking at my finished quilt and notice an unintended design element! (A humble error!) Haha no surprise here.

 

Land That I Love 2021 Quiltalong!

This weekend you can prep for the quiltalong! Overall size of the quilt is 25x17 so you won't need a lot of fabric. 

I'm using American flag colors and adding a few little patches of a black print. (I'm copying the antique) I encourage you to use the colors of your country flag!

so make the fabric and colors work for you.

I keep my Americana fabric in it's own tub so it made it easy to pick and choose some scraps.

Just choose some fabrics that you'd like to make your sewalong with. The original vintage quilt is very scrappy. If you want yours a little less "crazY' then choose only a few prints in red/white/tan/ blue. (or YOUR flag colors)

I love my patriotic fabs!

You'll need a little more for your setting squares and sides. This is the blue I used. You'll only need about 1/3yard x WOF. This can be a similar color, different print. 

Make it uniquely yours!

Last week while at the Alpine Lakes Wilderness we did a day hike to this beautiful glacial lake called Colchuck Lake. 

The trail was rough with lots of rocks

And roots!

                                                         Yep! This is the land I love!
