First Friday- Our Quilts! Photo Heavy

I tried to get to Quiltworks a tad early so I could get some photos without people. (They are fun ones too) 

 First up I met Sally from Salem. Our quilts were positioned next to each other so a photo op with our quilts was first!

They looked fantastic! If anyone else has a place they would like to exhibit them, please speak up! There are so many more to choose from too! At least 40 quilters participated in this challenge.Thank you all who sent their quilts.

Medallion Quilt Exhibit

As far as I know I have only one more medallion coming to me. It would be wonderful to have a couple more. I know a few have had to bow out, but originally there was quite a few that said they would like to have their quilt displayed at Quiltworks First Friday and monthly exhibit. 

I have the quilts out of the boxes spread out on the guest bed. 

Wow! They are all amazing and always so much better in person!

Right now I have 6 quilts and one more is on the way from Juliann.  Would anybody else like to commit their Gwennie inspired Medallion quilt to this exhibit in Bend, Oregon? Now would be a great time to write up a quilt description and get your quilt in the mail to me.

Gwennie Inspired Medallion Finale

Can you believe we made it to the final month of the Gwen Marston Inspired Medallion Quilt-a-Long?!

What a terrific suggestion Cynthia! 

As a reminder, the center theme was basket, the next round, childhood memories, followed by log cabin, stars, then fishy related. 

Here we go!

My final border was inspired by an antique quilt with a scalloped border. I love scallops, so I thought it was perfect for this quilt. I finished it off with a bold RED statement that I thought tied in the center colors as well. (bottom right is where I substituted a different fabric- I can hardly tell!)

What a very rarely ever do, is unstitch. But this was how it was first and I just didn't like it at all. Those corners were ugly, not liberated!

Vickie B managed to find some adorable mermaid fabric to use in her quilt.

Here is Pierrete's medallion. She used fish fabric and sea fabric. Love the buoy and anchor!

Sally finished hers with a bold pieced border! Looks fantastic!

Here is Ursula's terrific medallion. The blue background for the fish is great!

Gwennie Inspired Medallion QAL Part 3

Here we are again! I get so excited to see all the lovely version. Whoop! Whoop! Please add the link to your blog post or send me a photo and I'll post it.

Last month Cathy's theme was log cabin- any variety or version, including the name of a log cabin setting, which was the direction I went.

I knew right away I wanted to make a Streak of Lightning "log cabin setting" for my border. What I didn't realize is that I was going to run out of fabric and time...

I knew I wanted to bring out the turquoise from the center basket. I still want to add the bold solid somewhere before the quilt is done. I tried the zig zag on the top and bottom, the top and each side, the bottom and each side and thought it just looked all unbalanced, so went with the two sides.

I put it together by making flying geese.

Here is Pierrette's medallion so far. She opted to make many fun versions and variations of the log cabin block to surround her center. Love the addition of the yellow. 

Here is Karen Dever's fun medallion surrounded by liberated log cabins. Love that red corner fabric!!

Here is Sally M's quilt with the addition of log cabins. She is hoping to add a little something from a future round in the large corners. I think it's a great idea!

Here is Vicki B's medallion. The latest log cabin brings in all the color she has used so far. Wonderful!

This is Ursala's creative interpretation!! 

I chose to turn it into one giant log cabin block. I used slashes to make it flat and square since I am really "free flowing" in my piecing...letting the piece just happen. 

You ready for the next round? Katy says this:

"So the challenge for this next round, is to create a border with the star theme. You could make your entire medallion into a star center or add stars in your borders. Heck, you could use star fabric! We will be linking up the results of this round here on September 1st."

Gwennie Inspired Medallion

Our center block theme was baskets. Our first border theme was childhood.  

 I repeated the small polka dots found in the flower with a narrow border. When I saw this fabric it reminded me of the huckleberries we used to pick around our neighborhood. Fun summer days we'd bring a bowl of berries to my mom and ask if she'd bake a pie. I don't ever remember her saying no. Because I grew up in the Pacific Northwest we were surrounded by many trees. That is what my green liberated dogtooth border reminds me of.

 Sally's center and childhood border. "Born and raise in Eugene/Springfield -in the summer, we play hopscotch-kits-bike-camping- girl scouts. plus all the trees in Oregon valley.

Vicki's medallion. "Second row represents spending much of my childhood in the cornfield. Farm kids life. Green and yellow for corn and brown for the soil."

Cathy  has chosen "Log Cabin" for July's theme. There are so many different blocks from the traditional block to a bow tie log cabin block. You can also choose to interpret the name of different settings for log cabin blocks such as streak of lightning and barn raising.


What great medallions centers and borders this month! I look forward to seeing more.

Gwennie Inspired Medallion QAL

Today Is the reveal day for our center block Gwennie medallion sewalong!

Here's my center block. I brought it outside and the background color looks so much brighter. I will say it is a mustard color, that I'm happy to use as the background. My block is based loosely on an antique Baltimore style quilt block.

This was my inside photo, which was a little dark.

Isn't this lovely? Sally M in Salem made this for her center block.

Here is how Theresa interpreted the basket theme! Great block and wonderful thinking outside the box!

Karen started with a block from the 40's! Great idea! The strings work perfectly with it!!

Cynthia got to choose the theme for the next round. I only found out on Saturday night!

The next theme is…

CHILDHOOD.

This is meant to be a very open theme to be interpreted however you like - it is your quilt!

Your childhood; your folks' childhoods; the children in your life now or back when; children of the world;

For example....

• Someone might piece improv triangles in "apple" colors to remind her of learning to make apple pie with Grandma...
• Someone might piece a simple checkerboard reminiscent of playing board games....
• Childhood summers at the beach? How about a riff off of Ocean Waves. Or appliqued whales.
• Anything that reminds you, in any way, of any aspect of childhood!

We will reveal our borders Friday,  July 1st. 

I hope everyone has fun interpreting this theme! I can't wait to see what we all do!

Wow! I never saw that coming! I had a hard time sleeping cause my mind was doing flips! I got out the medallion book and have a spark of an idea.
