Parsonsfield Revisited

At the new quilt guild I am attending Nancy shared with me her Parsonfield little quilt. YAY!

An orphan block name tag! What a great idea! I always forget until he morning of guild that I'd like to make a name tag. I love this!

I had not planned on returning, but decided to make a trip to see my quilts hanging in the New England Quilt Museum and brought my little quilt to Parsonsfield. 

PS, I did have to stomp around in snow for some of these photos! haha

Parsonsfield Part 4 Finale

Here are more pictures of Parsonsfield, Maine when I visited in April 2022. It was the time of the year everything was "low volume" as you can see in my photos.

Here is my dear long time friend Paula who helped me draft the quiltalong when I hit a wall and couldn't  figure out how to move forward. 

Here is a few photos of the vintage quilt.  

It was so "NOT ME" but I really love it a lot! 

So, here we go!

Your center, after pressing it, should measure about 16" square. If it doesn't measure that, you will need to take your measurement into account when cutting and adding your borders.

We will start with a narrow inner border. 

Cut and piece if necessary 1 1/2" strip x 16" (or whatever your quilt measures) 

Add the narrow border to 2 opposite sides, then measure and add a border to the other two sides. 

Now you can refer to the vintage quilt or mine and you are going to piece the final border. I thought this border made this quilt so charming!

For the first two side borders you will need:

four 7 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangle

two 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangle

(please take into account what your quilt measures) 

Piece two of these as shown in my quilt above. Center your 4 1/2" piece (this piece is now 4") with the center of your quilt and add the borders to opposite sides of the quilt. 

You are almost done!

For the final 2 side borders you will need:

four 9 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles

two  4 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles

(please take into account what your quilt measures)

Piece these, then add to the other 2 sides of your quilt, centering the 4" piece with the center of your quilt. 

Admire your little quilt!  TADA!

Layer with your favorite little quilt batting, or flannel and quilt as desired.  Haha I really dislike those three words! The vintage one is not quilted so you can do as you please. I'll show you how I quilted mine.

Below is my rudimentary quilting diagram.

Bind, using your favorite method. Because the little quilts are not used like full size I only add a single fold binding to them. 

And don't forget to add a label!

Parsonsfield Part 3

Here is a sneak peak into the quilt name! The above photo was lifted from the internet. 

Subtle and low volume. :)

Here are the same photos from the 4 patches.

Now we are cutting squares and half square triangles. 

Little bits of red and blue give the quilt a little interest.

 

If you have a bin with 2 1/2" squares you can likely rummage in there and find what you need.

You'll need eight 2 1/2" squares

For the half square triangles you'll need eight 2 7/8" squares. You'll cut those on the diagonal for a total of 16 triangles. 

Once you have them cut you can lay out each corner

C) triangle- 4patch- B) 2.5" square-4 patch

triangle-4patch- add the lower triangle to this piece, pressing after adding the first triangle. 

Then sew together in rows, lining up your seams and pressing as you go. 

They may feel a little small, but take your time and sew carefully a scant 1/4"- you can do it!

Do that 4 times and you will have 4 pieced triangle sections to add to your center! YAY!

Line up the center of your middle pieced square with the 4 patch and pin from the center out. (above, red X)

Carefully add to the side of your center. Go directly across the pieced center and add the other pieced triangle to the center. Press before adding the remaining 2 sides.

Parsonsfield Part 2- 4 Patch

We will be making cute little 4 patches. You will need 16 total.

I'm giving you some close ups so you can see the fabric. 

There is a little blue, a little red, a little tan in the 4 patches.  

The upper right even has a tad of a yellow stripe.

When looking close it hardly seems low volume!

You can either strip piece using 1 1/2" strips or dig around in your 1 1/2" square bin and sew them together to make a 4 patch.

I opted to use the same 2 fabrics in my 4 patches.

Since I'm giving you a close up look you can see mine are not perfect, but humble.haha

When your 4 patches are made they should measure 2 1/2" unfinished.

You'll need 16 of them.

Parsonsfield Quiltalong Part 1

Happy Friday! Today is the day we start the 2024 quiltalong Parsonsfield!

We are starting slow and easy. Several of you are still waiting for your starter kit to arrive. They should be arriving very soon.

I tried to copy the vintage 1920's quilt, mostly in the direction of my fabric. This has a lot of movement/stripes. Embrace it!

Upper right rectangle/lower left rectangle are the same print. You put it together with whatever pleases you. 

 

C: Cut one 4 1/4" square 

Use the quilt for placement of fabrics. 

A: (you will need 12 total, but not all of the same fabric) 4 1/4" x 2 3/8" rectangles

B: eight 2 3/8" squares (using 3 different prints) 

Put together in rows, pressing so your seams nestle together. 

Yay! Admire your work! That was the easy part! lol

Parsonsfield Humble Quilts Quiltalong

Are you ready for this years' sewalong? 

This year will be a little different than the past few years. It's not a mystery!

I was inspired by an antique done in "low volume" circa 1920's

I wasn't sure how I was going to like it but I really do! 

It has SO many shirtings!

I'm calling it Parsonsfield. 

I've put together a little starter pack of 3" strips (12 different ones) to help you add variety to your little quilt. The cost is $6.50 plus shipping.

These range in length from 18-22" but equal 1/2 yard. 

If you'd like to purchase a pack please email me with your name and address at humblequilts@gmail.com and I'll figure out postage and send a total.

If you would like a piece large enough for the backing I can sell you 2/3 of a yard for an additional $6.50. 

 I take paypal, venmo, cash, or check.

No problem if you have plenty! We will start next Wednesday and I sure hope you'll join in!

 

Fun on A Friday

Here is block 17 of Uptown! I hope to start getting them trimmed and assembled.  Nice to have some of that done before the end which is near. 

I'm way ahead of the game for our 2023 quiltalong! Just put the final binding stitches in last night.

Hubby and I made it out for a nearby hike with a moderate elevation gain. Love some of the spring weather we are having. Of course now it is supposed to shoot up into the 80's and 90's next week!

I had a good week and am looking forward to another training hike with my daughter on Saturday. 

I'm going to a winery tonight to listen to a Beatles tribute band. Should be a fun night.
