Pet Peeve and A Little Airing

How well can you read that first word? Is it ptonen or is it ptorren? And what's with the comma and capital letter? Just this morning I noticed they must have ran out of single words, because now I have to type two of them!
Heaven forbid anyone should count on blogger's spam blocker to catch spam comments. Do you know there is one? In dashboard, go to comments, and click on the spam tab. Very rarely do I ever find a legitimate comment in the spam section, and I am not using word verification.

I do most of my blog surfing early in the morning when I am the only one up- I don't turn on the lights. I use the light from the computer to see my keyboard and drink my coffee.

You may not even know that word verification is now two words. If you use this, please tell me why. If you need help changing it, please email me and if you wonder why I stop leaving comments, you'll know why.

Ok, done, I had to get that off my chest this morning...

ADDED:
to turn word verification off:
Dashboard, settings, comments, scroll down this page until you find word verification- fill in the NO bubble. Click "save settings" at the bottom of the page.

  1. I noticed that this morning too...and I am with you, I don't think I am going to even try to read this in the future...took me twice as long to leave comments than normal....I thought it was just me!

  2. Seriously, they want us to do this before a full pot of coffee? I can't leave comments without trying twice anymore. Just can't read it. This may be my last comment .....

  3. I so agree with you. I am sick of having to type all these stupid words I can't even read.

  4. Thanks Lori, It has been bugging me too, so I'll turn my off!! Thanks

  5. I thought that was annoying, too. I was just guessing as I typed in those word verifications. I looked around, but didn't see where to change it. WIll try again.

  6. I had to check, but I don't use word verification and have had only a handful of spam-type comments in nearly 6 years of blogging. Hope I didn't just jinx myself *knock on wood*

  7. Every time I have removed the word verification from my blog, my inbox fills with spam. I don't like this new word verification either though, so I guess I'll take it off again and see what happens. Worst comes to worst...I can always put it back.

  8. I find this very annoying as well. I just found one that had numbers....grrr...I think I've turned this feature of my blog. I better check. I rarely get spam.

  9. I just did two sites that had verification. One was a simple addition problem and the other one was - what color is the first letter. Thought that was unique and easy!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree, I can't read it and I think it keeps followers from leaving comments.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well, you've hit the nail directly on the head! I totally agree and have stopped reading some of the blogs that have this type of requirement --- I have relatively decent eyesight and some of them are impossible!!

  12. I just noticed this, this morning. WOW, these old eyes are going to have trouble reading those. Thanks for letting us know there was a change.

  13. I've been having trouble with that word verification too--usually have to do two tries even though I spell the word right the first time. This is tiresome but I do want to comment so plug on.

On my blog I have no word verification but my settings are to send all comments more than 2 weeks old for moderation, which means they don't print until I see them. This is a common ploy in spammers, to junk up old posts with nastiness and spam. I also do not allow anonymous comments, which I think stops a lot of spammers. I also have all comments set to go directly to my email.

  14. OK. Fixed it. Thanks for pointing it out.
Some of us are new to blogging and learn by doing and from hearing from you "oldies". tee-hee
I also changed my comments to accept "anonymous" . I do have my spam blocker on-so I will see what happens.

  15. First, thank you so much for this post. I had been off blogging for a few days due to a hand injury and saw this double word thing when i got back on. I was wondering if it was just something w/ my computer or what. glad to hear others hate it as much as I do. It is awful with using a 'hunt & peck' method of typing right now.
I really appreciate the directions on turning it off.
    Have a wonderful day.

  16. I'm glad you posted this--I was going to vent about it myself, but you reach a much larger audience. I am tired of this already--they are crazy hard to read sometimes and clicking for a new one doesn't really help. I don't even know if this is on my blog, but I am turning it off if it is. Thanks!

  17. I hate these too! I also hate that almost all my blogger friends accounts somehow simultaneously started not accepting Wordpress Open IDs. Part of the revamping? I always try Open ID, but usually end up going Name/URL. ~ Lynda

  18. I just fixed mine. Didn't even realize I had it on there! Oops! Thanks for the post about this.

  19. after reading the comments I just wanted to let you know it is working...I didn't have to leave a word verification with my last post or this one. Hey!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I had my first experience with a double word verification this morning. And the first word was hyphenated. So that seems like three words to me. I never could read all the letters and gave up. I tried clicking on the verification using sound and it was all garbage and I couldn't understand any of it.

  21. I was on a blog today and one of their words was 'laborious'. If that didn't say it all!
I'll bet this will pass. Who's going to put uip with all this?

    ReplyDelete
  22. It is sooooo frustrating. I do not have it on mine, but I have just not been leaving as many comments today as normal.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I had the same problem this morning - why do they have to make it so difficult? I just went and changed my blog - thanks for the instructions!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Are you using the new version of Blogger because I can't find the 'verification' button in it. I completely agree with you - hate the new way and have been trying to get rid of it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Never mind - I went back to the old post editor and fixed it, then back to the new. What were they thinking? Can I borrow your example picture so I can post this, too?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thank you so much Lori for commenting on this. I had such a hard time posting a comment this morning! Florence

    ReplyDelete
  27. I turned off word verification some time ago, the spam comment blocker on Blogger works very well, like you I haven't had a spam comment creep through yet.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thank you for posting this, I have tried to leave comments before and given up because those are impossible to encrypt and then I have to retype the comment and try again. I am going to go make the change!!
    :))

  29. I suddenly got a flurry of rotten spam comments last week and wondered if this is the fix for those. I cannot read the first word in this new two word sequence. The prompt tells you to prove you're not a robot but I feel more like it is taunting me because my eyes aren't as young as they used to be and I have to prove I am just human.

I was resisting the Jubilee projects and then I met my inspiration quilt. Actually, I own it but I was inspired to change the colors. Is there time to still count me in?

  30. I just took mine off, I guess I didn't realize I even had it turned on and I don't like it when I have to do this, so THANK YOU for bringing it to my attention.

    ReplyDelete
  31. No more word verification! Thanks for the directions on how to do this....Bah for Blogger! :-(

    ReplyDelete
  32. I stopped word verification ages ago because i find it so annoying. I've had a couple of spam comments but I just deleted them!! I find it hard to read the two words, especially as I use my phone a lot for reading blogs. Sometimes I just give up and not leave a comment. Thanks for bringing this up.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks for the info on turning Word Verification off! I really can't stand the ones you can barely read. Mine is now turned off too. Life is too short and time too precious!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks for the post...The crazy words take me 3 or 4 tries to get right....why discourage comments?...its crazy!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I turned off word verification a long time ago --- I just have it set so that I have to approve comments on posts over 2 weeks old. That's how the spam ones sneak in there, but most of the time they ARE caught by the spam filter. I even accept anonymous comments --- comments are so easy to delete, and I don't want to keep anyone FROM commenting. Funny you posted this, because I had to squint at someone's blog to comment this morning, and I almost gave up because of the two word thing that i couldn't read.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I saw that too, better check my settings, it is such a pain in the neck as it is, never mind mushy words to figure out, lol.

  37. I am guessing that a lot of people didn't realize that that was an option they could turn off when they started their blogs. I for one wouldn't have known about it but for YOURs and BONNIE'S guidance when I set up my blog last July... So maybe now you've raised an awareness. Well said, Lori...as usual.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I noticed that yesterday when I was leaving comments on some of the blogs I visit. What I find most annoying is that I can't read all of the words either. I had to refresh a few times to get a new captcha that I could read :(

    ReplyDelete
  39. Changed it on my blog - I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't make out the words!!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thanks for the tip Lori.
It was starting to really annoy me too.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree, so annoying. I will have to make sure it is shut off on my blog.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It seems a lot of people are finding the word verification a problem. Why didn't Blogger check with people first to see if they liked this system, instead of arbitrarily changing it? I know that most bloggers like to get comments, they can be helpful and inspiring, but if people get frustrated, then they won't be leaving those comments, so the unfortunate blogger looses out. Hopefully, the bloggers know that they can turn off the word verification.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Not that I needed to add to this list but apparently I need a little airing!!! This just blasted my head apart this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I just turned off my verifications by following your instructions -- easy, peasy.
These stupid, fuzzy, sloppy words are a pain. One is bad enough, but two? Like a couple have already commented, where was the warning? Why not ask if we want this change? It's been a pain recently. Nothing was saved the first time I'd type the word, even when I knew I'd typed it right. Maybe "they" were getting ready for the big move to the 2-word fiasco.

  45. This new thing with Google is so irritating. I tried to leave a comment on one of my favorite blogs and after the third or fourth time I just gave up. Not all of us have 20/20 vision.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hear, hear Lori.
The past few weeks I've tried leaving comments on a few different blogs and even after doing the stupid verification it just won't publish. No error msg no nothing. It's extremely frustrating. If you go to the trouble of typing a msg you want it to print and be seen. And now they want us to type 2??????? And I swear they have made that word harder to read and I've had coffee!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thanks Lora, I didn't realise that I had word verification. I also chose to accept all comments - didn't realise that either of those settings were there. I guess I should check from time to time.

    ReplyDelete
  48. PS. do you know why we have to log in sometimes to leave a comment? Is that optional too?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I so agree Lori - got rid of word verification ages ago and the spam filter seems to get rid off anonymous and weird comments but I do check the spam box as a few genuine comments get stuck in there from time to time!

    ReplyDelete
  50. thank you thank you thank you. I so agree with you.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I agree 100%, early AM when I'm reading my favorite blogs, and sometimes the letter run together and look like a black/white mess!
I have been blogging since 08 and have NOT had one spam yet!
Let me know what this word is
    09847)(%^&#$^&&*(((&!@#$%^&kdjhhaKI.

  52. I could not agree more! I turned mine off long ago. They are even more obnoxious for those of us who use an Ipad...autocorrect always changes the words.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Well, sounds like you've gotten everyone's day off to a good start!:) Thanks for solving some problems first thing in the morning! Hope you have a good day too.....

    ReplyDelete
  54. I thought my word verification was off, but when I checked it was on sooo, I turned it off. Those crazy words are impossible to read.
    Thanks for the post.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I LOVE you!!! LOL!!!! Seriously, that was a post after my own heart. I was just spewing about it to myself as I was trying to comment on another blog. I'm like is that an m or rn together??? LOL!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. i turned off word verification a while ago and have had no spam problems.
I too had one of the these 2 words ones this morning - yikes -!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I changed my settings...thank you!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Same experience here...and with my almost 68 year old eyes, those "words" are ultra garbled.

What gives? Another example of "new and improved"?

Will check out my own set up to make sure it is easy to comment...we all treasure visitors who take the time to leave a message.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Juat this morning I tried to leave a comment on a blog and gave up because I couldn't read the words they wanted me to type.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I clicked mine off this morning. Thanks for getting the word out!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I turned mine off but I felt I had to turn it back on as I was having some unpleasant spam messages which I don't want.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Oh, thank you thank you thank you for writing that!!! My eyes just can't take that new word verification.

I do think there are probably a lot of bloggers out there who don't realize that Blogger will filter out the spam with or without the word verification. (Not gonna admit how long it took me to figure that out!)

    ReplyDelete
  63. I guess Blogger knows how to peeve people off huh! LOL!!! I have been off the computer for a few days and when I tuned back in to catch up on blog reading I am met with this hideous new version of word verification! I think we need to complain to Blogger, it seems to be very unpopular and yes I have had to try up to 3 times to get my comment to be accepted. I will look into changing it on my blog, but I really don't want to be hit with lots of spam either - ummmm! what to do.....

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh, I agree -- these are awful! There was a blog the other day that I tried five times to enter the two words and could never get the dark/light combo right. I finally gave up. I suspect this particular variation is going to have a short shelf life -- at least I certainly hope so.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I've been doing a little blog catch up (while my other half watches his team being defeated in the first round of football for the season) and am SO FRUSTRATED at not being able to read those STUPID double words so I can leave messages at my other favourite sites. Thank you SO much for not having verification - and allowing me to vent! Apologies. x

    ReplyDelete
  66. I SO agree with you! I have blog time early before the family is up..and enjoy my coffee and "friends" If I cant see well enough to leave a comment....I just dont! Frustrating for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hi Lori
I just tried to leave a comment on another blog and it took me about 6 attempts to get it right!! I nearly gave up.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Thank you for showing me the light! I have recently become less than happy with word verification but I am fairly computer illiterate. Your instructions were helpful...perhaps I'll get more comments on my own blog if fewer hoops have to be jumped through. I didn't even know I had word verification turned on...it's kind of embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Didn't find out until today and don't like it either. I will have a thought or two about what to do ;-)...

    ReplyDelete
  70. I just turned mine off. Does anyone know WHY they decided to make this horrible change? Thanks for letting me know I was not alone in hating the two unreadable words for verification.
