Donation Quilts- Thank you!

I finally got a chance to photograph the lovely quilts that were donated for the auction for  

Faith Seeds Guatemala.  I'm on the board and you can see some of my past trip HERE and HERE.

The maker of this joyful quilt would like to remain anonymous. 

It is as sweet as can be! I love it!!

Lovely vintage sheet for the backing. Vintage textiles have such a wonderful feel to them.

 

This incredible applique quilt is 21" square!

It has a ton of detail!!

Yes, that is hand quilting and hand applique.

I have a top that was donated that I am having machine quilted.  Will share that one later.

Donation Requested

This post is on behalf of Faith Seeds International. (The non profit board I'm on) 

In Sisters, Oregon this summer they are having a big fundraiser. Gaby, my sweet Guatemalan friend who started Faith Seeds, will be there. I don't know all the details except I was asked if my

 "Quilt team" (YOU!) could come up with an "offering" for the silent auction.  This was asked by a fellow board member/non quilter. I thought his verbage was really sweet. 

I decided since I don't use this basket quilt in my lectures I will be donating it.

If anyone here has it in their heart to donate something you've made- quilt, craft, or other "offering" I would be super appreciative. I am able to give you a receipt for your donation! (Added benefit)

You may or may not know my first mission trip was to Guatemala. It touched my heart deeply and am looking forward to returning later this year!

I took pillowcase dresses in the past. Faith Seeds after school program is in the mountains, near a volcano, and coats are much more practical than the dresses. (Thank you for the box of warm jackets and hats! and books for fundraising!)) This volcano was spewing while I was there.

The Next Generation of Quilters

 This photo was shared on the Humble Quilts facebook group. This is is Katelyn and she is 9 from Illinois. Look at her first quilt she is making!!! When completed she is going to give it to a veteran on Veteran's Day. Do you know how happy that veteran will be to receive this quilt??? Her grandma says she has more blocks made and is hoping to get the quilt into a top this weekend!!
I LOVE everything about this. Hopefully she is one of the next generation of quilters!!

As I told you Quiltworks in Bend is closing their doors for good. She is having one last First Friday and it is a fundraiser for Sewteachme.org which the owner of Quiltworks started. Click the link to read more. Here's a blurb:

STM is a non-profit program that matches trained, screened mentors with youth so that kids can learn to sew for free.

It was founded at QuiltWorks in Bend, Oregon and is organized by a small team of volunteers.

STM teaches youth basic sewing skills in a safe and comfortable environment. Volunteers and mentors want to share our love of sewing with the next generation.

Marilyn asked previous featured quilters if they'd like to donate a quilt to be purchased at the last First Friday. I donated "Stand Tall Chicken" made as a Humble Quilts Year of the Rooster challenge.

I'm hoping it sells and I can play a small part in teaching the next generation of quilters, like Katie!!

I'm preparing to walk Cascade Lakes Relay starting today- at the start line at 7:30AM!! My first "leg" is 7.1 miles in the middle of the afternoon and my 2nd leg will be about 5:30AM. If our timing is correct we should cross the finish line about 1:30 Saturday afternoon.

Here's my little Drunkards Path quilt that I rec'd in kit form from Martha. I warmed up my machine quilting skills for my red and white quilt with this. Isn't it adorable?! Thank you Martha!

The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative

Many of you know that I have done a few little quilts for The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative. It's a great cause and I like that they are very transparent with the money they raise. 2 of my quilts were in the auction that ended on the 10th. I received a wonderful touching email from Sue, who bid and won one of my quilts. She gave me permission to reprint that here:

Dear Lori,

I just wanted to say a very big thanks for making this quilt which I know I am going to love when it arrives from the USA.
I am a quilter and former quilt shop owner . My husband Dick has suffered with early onset Dementia since the age of 52 and now at the age of 64 has been in a nursing home for the past 2 years.

It is a wonderful thing that people are acknowledging what a devastating illness Alzheimer's is. I have been robbed of my husband and those dreams we had for our retirement.

I am going to Paducah in the spring and hope to buy wool for some projects. It is not something that is popular or readily available here in the UK. Quilting has kept me sane when the rest of my life was falling apart.

A small quilt (9"x12") donated to AAQI is a big thing! Will you commit to making one quilt this year? Ami wants to bring 1000 to sell to Houston this year and needs more quilts! She is also looking for themed quilts to travel the country to raise awareness of Alzheimer's. You don't have to wait for an auction to purchase a quilt and support this cause. You can find many right now for sale. If you need more information the AAQI website is loaded.

We can find a cure for this devastating disease and give people like Sue and her husband hope for the future when they get the diagnosis of Alzheimer's.

HBO did a series called The Alzheimer's Project. If you are at all interested in personal stories and the science of Alzheimer's I would highly recommend it. It is available through Netflix and many libraries.

AAQI

My little dancing girl (I really don't want to see a dancing girl, but I do!) was made as a fundraiser for The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative. I didn't mention it in the earlier post because I was waiting for permission from Sue Spargo, which she gladly gave. She is making labels for me to put on the back, then it will be ready to register and mail.

I'm sure most of you know about AAQI but did you also know that they have raised more then $305, 000 for Alzheimer's research?! For a grassroots effort that is truly amazing. It goes back to the spirit of quilters and their generosity. Ami Simms started this effort and it has grown by leaps and bounds. Now it isn't a single woman show but a registered non profit organization. There is a lot more legitimacy with this title and they have control over where the money raised goes.

It is estimated that 5.3 million Americans have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Recently my mom was diagnosed with this disease. The future is unknown for my mother and the rest of our family. The one thing I do know? I can make quilts to help the cause.

I need a name for the quilt. Sue calls the whole quilt Mercer Lane. Maybe something about Mercy?? Any ideas. Naming quilts isn't my strong point.
