Whoopee Wednesday!

We made it to Idaho just in time! I got back last evening and today it is snowing again!

Here's my niece's little boy (my grand-nephew) Zackary on the quilt I gave to them. 

He is 3 weeks old and doing well.

We took my niece out for dinner. They've had a lot of snow too, so I understand being housebound.

My daughter made the trip with me. 

 Because I was meeting my daughter, I went a different way- right by Pendleton Woolen Mills, 

with a long and wonderful Oregon history. 

 This little lamb was at my sisters. They actually had 20 babies! at least 3 of them were being bottle fed. 

Isn't this cute? I made this and gave it to my sister many years ago. Sure makes me wish for spring. 

 I also made this many years ago and it was hanging in her house too. 

I love seeing her enjoy things I've made.

Windmills for Momma and Baby

I started this quilt last July in Sisters at a class with Sujata of The Root Connection. In the back of my mind I thought it would work for a baby quilt but didn't know if I'd need it for a boy or a girl. 

You all helped me choose the border and I'm happy with it. 

It's for a boy, by the way. 

I shared with you the ABC fabric, and obviously I measured wrong. 

So, instead of just a baby quilt, it's a mom and baby quilt!

Monday Muses

Here's a cute little quilt I finally got hung up this weekend. I made this quilt start to finish  in 3 days while visiting a friend in Ohio in 2000. It is a pattern by Cheri. The basket handles, holly leaves, and berries are done all raw edge applique. 

This baby quilt is a lot bigger than I thought! So, I'm calling it a mom and baby snuggle quilt. I'm going to bind it in a wide blue. I'll have to piece the backing too since my ABC fabric is not large enough. 

I made this little table topper with the antique redwork. Or it could eventually be a pillow, or a wall hanging or whatever the recipient would like to do with it. Nothing like options, right?! LOL

I shared this on my facebook page. The linen and screen print were purchased at IQF.  It's a fun reminder of my daughter and I riding bikes through Paris.

Quilt for Baby

 This was a quilt I made this past summer in Sujata's class during the Sisters quilt show. I  always contemplated in the back of my mind that I may use it as a baby quilt.  My niece is pregnant and will be having a boy. (soon!)

 I want to add a border and found this blue I got from Paula Nadelstern in Houston (she generously shared with the education staff)  and thought it might work. eh......

 I like the green better, but it feels like it needs a narrow border between the quilt and the green. Red? Blue?

When I went to First Friday at Quiltworks I tried out a few pieces. I can't say I liked the red border either, but I did purchase a bit, maybe for the narrow border before the green? I'm not going to fuss over it too much. My niece is appreciative of my quilts and I know she will use this, no matter how humble it is. 

I'm open for suggestions..... I need to get crackin on it soon!

I did get this colorful piece for the backing- at least that will look like a quilt for a child.

After I had this post ready to go I took a few more photos. Our snow may turn to freezing rain and
if that happens I'm staying home and sewing:)

We  got our first snow yesterday! Elsa was thrilled to pieces!

She was trying to play with her ball but it kept disappearing under the snow!

Porter likes the snow too, but also knows he likes a warm bed inside!

Friday Frenzy

 Here's a little project I've been working on. I just have to stitch the green sprigs by the bird then applique it to the background. With the impending storm I thought it would be appropriate to show a photo today. Stay warm! Stay safe!

 For those of you that like to think spring is near here is another wool piece.  It folds in half and ties and is a needle keeper. The inside was a bit primitive so I've opted not to show it! It was a thank you gift for my friend in Ohio.

 Here's the Superbowl baby that decided to make his presence on January 25th instead of February 3rd. I got to meet him on Superbowl Sunday and present him with is cowboy quilt. It wasn't love at first sight! lol

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting fellow  blogger Brandie.  Her brother is in Portland for major surgery and I made a day trip to try and show my support.  I'm not sure how much that happened but we had a nice time getting to know each other better over coffee and lunch. She is so sweet!

First Finish of the Year!!

I didn't even notice until several comments in that my last post title and list were both labeled 2012! Too funny! Well, here's my first finish of 2013 and  it's crossed off my 2012  2013 list!

Cowboy baby quilt. From the cowboy fabric I had and the ones I swapped and some given to me I've made three quilts! All going to the same family. You can see the other two at this post. Thank you again friends and readers!! You are so generous!!

This isn't your typical baby quilt backing, but it was in my stash and I thought it looked pretty good. The label is on and it is ready for baby who is due February 3, which I believe is Superbowl Sunday.

2012 quilts

Making a list checking it twice......

I'm a list maker and for some reason I seem to get more done when I can see a list in front of me.

First up is the cowboy baby quilt, since babies don't wait for quilters! I've already got a check mark on "add borders"!! I'm cutting out the backing and plan on getting it spray basted and quilted in the next few days.

Someone had asked me a little bit ago if I was doing another quiltalong after the holidays. So I am! Here's a little stack of scraps that I'll be using. This time it's going to be small- 12" square. It will be easy to add to it if you wish. It's a replica if a vintage doll quilt that is 11.5" square. It is so precious!!

Productive Week

Here were my retreat projects. I feel pretty good about what I got done.

Another quilt made from the cowboy fabric!! Yeehaw! I have a border fabric picked out and am hoping to get it on today.

I added the cheddar outside the spikes to help give this quilt balance. I brought a stencil to possibly get it prepped for trapunto. The stencil was too small and am now having second thoughts about doing it at all.

After finding my blocks at home I finished the main body of Just Takes Two!! After seeing some options I considered a more elaborate border, but only for about two seconds. Now I'm thinking a 4-6" red border and calling it DONE!

Weekend Progress

I actually was able to get a little sewing done this weekend. Both baby quilts are ready to wrap! A name just needs to be added to the labels when the babies are born. Should I send a fabric marker along with the long distance one so they can add it with the same pen I used? Or should I just make a note in the card to write in baby's name in the blank space?

I first saw this block on Karen's blog. Linen Closet Quilts is doing a BOM. I've never met an eagle block that I didn't want to make! It sure looks like my needle turn applique needs a bit of practice

Merry Go Round

Here is the second baby quilt top I finished! Woo-Hoo! It is the pattern Merry Go Round by Sandy Klop.

Made by cutting strips! The pattern is for a twin size quilt so the first quilt I made the blocks were really too big for a baby quilt. I shrunk the template so I cut the strips 2" instead of 2 1/2".

Sew half of the triangles together. Notice that one strip set makes 2 circles that have opposite colors.

Lay out your rows.....

And sew them together! Pretty darn slick, huh?

This was the first quilt, which I am still going to finish and give to the parents to be, I just wasn't happy with the size of the circles. You can compare the top photo with this one and may be able see the difference.

I hope to get them both basted and quilted before next week.

Organized Chaos

Is it any wonder I am having a hard time staying focused? Yikes!!! I hope to have a baby quilt to show for it very soon. And a clean room!

I've got little piles of ideas and unfinished projects.

Baby Quilts

Generally I reserve baby quilts for my special friends or family. I don't want my quilts to be folded up and put away for the future. I really want to see them used and snuggled with. I also think there is something really exciting about a baby quilt in 30's reproduction. They are so bright and cheery and fun!

Here is a simple one that Rene (my daughter) requested for a co-worker. Another bright and cheery one with frogs!
