Whatnot Wednesday

After returning from our mission trip to DR on December 7th I feel like I've started the Christmas holiday behind a little bit. 

I've been doing a little of this and a little of that. 

Putting up simple decor. 

Attending a holiday party with this adorable snoozer!

Made a trip to the local cemetery to see Wreaths Across America on my dad and father-in- laws graveside. Have you heard of this?  I think this was only the 2nd year they have done it locally. 

With one week to spare Cory put up a few house lights, 

And put up his reproduction bubble lights inside. 

No tree this year. 

I'm running out of time, but I did get my Cody panel basted. Now I must get busy machine quilting it!

Any thoughts on quilting the panel?

Week of Thanksgiving

As we close in on Thanksgiving Day, in USA. I want to take this time to tell you how much I appreciate you all! It has been a wonderful year of travelling to guilds, opening an Etsy store, meeting amazing people, and continuing to connect to you all via Humble Quilts! Just know I appreciate you all so much. 

The border in this quilt is especially sweet as it has church, home, family, and my pets.

And ya'll know I cannot make a blog post without a quilt and I thought this one was perfect!

We are celebrating Thanksgiving on Wednesday, so I'll be back Friday with the finale of our Welcome Quiltalong. 

Let's make it a terrific and grateful week.

The Legend of St Valentine:

On February 14 around the year 278A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, was executed.

Under the rule of Claudius the Cruel, Rome was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns. The emperor had to maintain a strong army, but was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families.

To get rid of the problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. The sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 270.

Legend also has it that while in jail, St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine.”

For his great service, Valentine was named a saint after his death.

Gradually, February 14 became a date for exchanging love messages, poems and simple gifts such as flowers.

Falling into Christmas

I'm making the transition to Christmas at my house! 

Most of the decor is still in the attic but I can get started with my quilts!

Out with fall!

We got our first little bit of snow yesterday! It was really cold and windy and I knew something was blowing in! Brrrr. 

The first week of the sale transition has been a bit of chaos. We've had lots of people going in and out, and just a bit of craziness. For example, We cancelled our trash service and they picked up our dumpsters! Uhhh yea, the business still needs to dump the trash. I would say, "not my problem" but my niece is now the manager and we are trying to make it as smooth as possible for her. Our employees have been hired by the new company and Cory is staying on for 3 months as a consultant, and I am trying to get the new program for the machine shop understood. It will calm down soon, but still stressful.

 I think I caught up on my mail. Google has rearranged my in boxes so I think I may have missed a few. Thank you all for your kind words about my daughter (she is out of quarantine and recovering with no emergency issues) and the sale of the business.

We have a customer appreciation gig happening today and our employee (former employees lol) Christmas party this weekend.

Where are you Winter?

All week our weather has been in the high 50's, low to mid 60's! So unusual! I know it isn't officially winter until December 21st, but snow would be wonderful any time now! 

I'm going to hang up this quilt and appeal to the snow "goddesses" lol

We have had so many things going on that this week my blog has been neglected. That will change soon! YAY!

One of the stresses is my daughter contracted Covid. Because she is a hairdresser she is super careful and cautious. She's been vaccinated and wears a mask in public. We have no idea where she picked it up. She lives with her boyfriend and he has tested positive as well. We were around her last weekend before she had any symptoms and so far everyone who has tested has been negative. (thank goodness)

My friend and fellow hiker Michelle, lives in Portland and made a grocery run for my daughter and me. We have a big crew here today working on inventory and it wasn't possible for me to get away. I'm so grateful for girlfriends we can rely on. I don't take my friendships for granted. Thank you so much Michelle! Rene loved the flowers too!!

It's Beginning to Look ♫Like Christmas ♫

We opted to not put up a tree this year but I still decorated a bit. 

I saw a runner like this in an old Country Living magazine several years ago and made my own. I used old feed sacks to applique the traditional design. 

I am such a fan of textiles you can find them throughout the house year round. I change them out depending on the season. 

On another note:

In Scandinavia, Pixies or Nisse is a household spirit that is responsible for the care and prosperity of a farm or family. A Nisse is usually described as a short man or woman (under four feet tall) wearing a red cap. While belief in guardian spirits is a very old tradition in Scandinavia, belief in Nisser was prominent in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Denmark, southern Norway and southern Sweden. Many farms claimed to have their own Nisse. The Nisse took an active interest in the farm by performing chores such as grooming horses, carrying bales of hay, and other farm-related tasks. These chores were usually done much more efficiently and effectively than by their human counterparts.

However, Nisser could be temperamental, to say the least. If the household was not careful to keep its Nisse satisfied -- usually in the form of a single bowl of porridge with butter in it left out on Christmas Eve -- the spirit could turn against its masters.

In the 1840s the farm's Nisse became the bearer of Christmas presents in Scandinavia, and was then called "Julenisse" and has been associated with Christmas ever since.

I've opted to collect the adorable Danish Maileg Nisse. You can find then hiding all over my house during winter. 

My grandfather and his family immigrated to USA from Denmark in the 1870's. I like to think that is where I get my love of these Danish Nisse.

It's Beginning to look like Christmas

I don't know if we will be putting up a tree, but I always display the vintage Santa suit that my FIL used to wear when his kids were little. 

I made the goofy Santa, but look what he is sitting on!! Liz H made this for our antique block challenge and sent it to me as a thank you. I LOVE it and will proudly display it. Thanks again Liz.

No sewing for me yet, since the end of month/beginning of month is a busy time for me. We just put our part timer on full time so that should free me up a little more. (whoop! Whoop!)
