Outings...

Look at these fantastic patterns and book that my friend Randy brought back from market and gave to me. I'm especially intrigued by the strawberry applique pattern after reading Barbara Brackman's blog on that particular pattern recently.

On my way to the airport on July 4th I had to make a quick stop into Fabric Depot and check out the outdoor sale. I found a few pieces I needed for my stash. The smaller pieces of shirtings were swatches at 10 cents each. Sure beats rummaging the thrift stores for shirts in the colors I want.

Sew Many Quilts in Bend, Oregon has really increased their wool section. I couldn't have been happier!!! As usual, they had it displayed wonderfully!!!

One of our stops was the Stitchin' Post where I was so tempted by this book. I had a hard time justifying the price, even with a 30% discount. I got it today from Amazon for a price I could afford. It has beautiful photos with lots of projects and inspiration!!

Hmmm, I have a difficult time with this. Aren't the Gees Bend quilts utility quilts made from fabrics they have to satisfy their creativity and keep their family warm? A kit? For a utility quilt? I know they are considered art, but personally I think it is the history behind the Gees Bend quilts that makes them so special.

Friday night my friend from Ohio and I attended the picnic in the park in Sisters. The man at our table took a quick estimate of people who were being catered dinner. 8 tables x 8 tables with 10 people at each table= a whole lot of people to feed!!! LOL The man and his wife who sat at our table were so sweet. He came to the quilt show and she went on a brewery hop with him. Sounds like a good trade off.

Can anybody be as sweet as Alex Anderson? She seems so real and genuine. (funny too!) She was our host for the show and tell. It was a really good time.

  1. Looks like a wonderful time in the park! Did Alex do a trunk show? Love your patterns...that strawberry looks particularly intriguing! Some books are so dear it is hard to justify the cost...and whilst I love the Gees Bend quilts, I too agree that a utility quilt seems a little odd in a kit! have a great day!

  2. I took two days of classes from Alex before she was very well known. She is as genuine as she appears. I learned a lot from her.
The strawberry pattern looks unusual and quirky enough that I really like it.

  3. Looks like you had a great week. That strawbeerry pattern looks fun, I'll have to check out her blog. I just bought a book on Gee's Bend for our library. I too think they are art and laugh (to myself) when people ask for patterns for the quilts. So missing the point!

  4. I loved the patterns you bought. Terry Clothier Thompson just has a way with reproduction quilts. The quilt stores looked great too, I had to magnify the pictures and take everything in. So little time.........

  11. Lots of lovely patterns...where will you begin? Terry Thompson came to our quilt retreat for an afternoon, and shared her inspiration for some blocks she was working on. I always enjoy talking to her, as she is very much a historian. Enjoy!

  14. I was intrigued by the post Barbara had on the strawberries so I'm diggin' this applique pattern. I'll love watching you work with this. Shopping looks fun but gosh how cool to take in a 'Show and Tell' with Alex Anderson. She seems like a real nice lady (from her picture - like I'd know!) (ps: diggin' the fabric finds)

  15. I just took a class with Alex in Knoxville...really a nice person! Ya, that Gee Bend kit sort of blows the whole concept of individualism that they represent doesn't it...sometimes ya just gotta say what were they thinking....

The strawberry is very interesting; I keep thinking about that post in Barbara Brackman's blog. Quite uncommon.

Lori, this is Darlynn. I just texted Randy...I cannot stand reading one more post from a quilter about Sisters! Coupled with your and Bonnie's loverly messages about Randy's place. Know that I read your blog all the time and feel as though I already know you, kinda.
