Current Projects

I made these recently- actually I think I had the centers made for a few at least, but I finished all six.....

Which will join these six. Now onto making the flying geese sashing.  Do you have a favorite method? Does your method depend on the finish size you want to make.  These are fairly big so I plan on doing them traditionally, with two triangles and a rectangle.  The original antique quilt had 4 patches  as the cornerstones. This is a busy quilt and I love it!

I've rotated to my next hand project which is new! Ranette generously sent me her
Scandinavian Christmas pattern when she was done with it. It was a whole lot smaller than I thought so she has given me a lot of good tips too. My grandfather is from Denmark so I love all things Scandinavian, including this precious wallhanging! This is block one. I need to make a few more little churn dashes that go between the blocks. They are so cute I couldn't help but forge ahead and make one.
Cathy B from Big Lake Quilter sent me this adorable bag. It has a little velcro closure- it is perfect for keeping my thimble, thread, small scissors and glasses in. It is also a perfect reminder that spring really will come soon.  Thank you Cathy!

PS I have made a few cosmetic changes to my blog. If you experience any difficulties with it loading or anything else, please let me know. There are a few blogs I have trouble with and it can be very frustrating, especially if you have limited time.

  1. Those blocks are wonderful! If I am making small flying geese (less than 3 inches finished) than I paper piece them. If it is larger than I use the square against the "brick" method and trim it down (getting the bonus hst along the way...because a gal can never have too many hst can she!

  2. I am going to love the antique quilt when it is finished! I use Open Gates method for flying geese since I like to make everything oversized and then custom cut them. Wonderful gift from Cathy!

  3. I love your scrappy blocks Lori...can't remember the name of them right now though. I just use the same method you do for flying geese most of the time.

I do like the gray for your SC!!! I'm really into gray right now. And the itty bitty churn dash is a cutie! Most important tip...don't forget the french knots. I did on the first block and had to go back and do them.

  5. I use the same method for flying geese. It works best for me and there's no waste. The quilt will be gorgeous when you get it finished!!! I am Norwegian (both sides of the family), so I love Scandinavian things too. That one looks cute so far. Can't wait to see the other blocks.

  6. Love the scandinavian wall hanging. I saw that online somewhere but had to pass. My mom's parents were from Denmark as well..in fact, mom just got back from a month long trip, which ended with 5 days in Denmark to see family.

  14. I love all you are working on, Lori. Yes, those first blocks will make a busy quilt, but that is what I like about it! I've always used the rectangle and 2 squares method to make flying geese. What a sweet gift from Cathy - and useful, too!

  15. This is going to be a really beautiful quilt. I use a method for flying geese that will allow you to make them any size with great accuracy. I have a tutorial here: http://mikisquilts.blogspot.com/2011/04/flying-geese-tutorial.html
I also really like the Scandinavian quilt quite a bit.

  20. What a great quilt so far! Best method of flying geese is l large square and 4 smaller squares. You'll end up with 2 of the same, but it's so fast and easy and they're perfect every time. And there's no waste.

  26. I like using the method shown on second on this tutorial from Connecting Threads - http://tinyurl.com/43ca2vs
Since it makes more than one at a time, it seems to go faster although I've never timed it. So who knows?

I always made my FG with the same method : 1 large square for 4 small squares sewn on the diagonale = 4 FG and no waste (even for the tiny star in my last DJ blocks posted...)
Also love Scandinavian Christmas. If you want to exchange patterns when done, with some of mine, I am OK :)

  41. Curious if there is a reason/pattern for which way the hourglass blocks go. It appears they are random, but I was just curious. It looks great.
