Antique Quilts Part 2

This quilt was exquisite! Look at that hand quilting!!
This looks like little pebbles.
It isn't very often we see a Mariner's Compass at the "tent" sale.
I actually thought this might make a fun quiltalong, until I realized that I would shrink the block and the pieces would be so tiny!
Here's Debbie holding this wonderful graphic quilt top. I'm pretty sure there is a reason it was never layered and finished. Trying to get all that to lay flat would be a miracle!!
This was one of my favorites because of the lovely madder fabric. Looks at the piece that looks like a doily. Amazing!!
It took me a bit to realize this is a basket quilt with no handles! The setting is unusual, as well. There is something quirky and fun about it! Hmmmm, don't know how to applique? Oh well, who needs to put the handles on anyway? hahahaha
The last two quilts I show were not in the quilts for sale booth.
The story on this one is that it was made in the 1830's. It had a bit of family history on the tag and the owner's had added a quilt label to that effect.  I do not believe it had been documented or appraised, just family lore. If it was this old it was in remarkable shape.
This graphic quilt quilt grabbed my attention from across the street. It is old and was for sale. Overall it was a lovely quilt.
I can't say that I've ever seen this color combination before. Mourning grays/blacks, shirting prints,  chrome yellow, blues, and muslin.  I can't decide if I like it or not. What are your thoughts on it?

  1. The basket quilt without the baskets is very cool IMHO. I'm enjoying imaging what sort of stories could be developed about that!

Personally, I'm totally taken with the uniqueness of the last quilt. The color combos encourage the eye to travel almost in a circular fashion and muslin is a perfect setting block for it. Also, the piecing is well done. My mentor once told me she didn't buy antique quilts unless she herself loved them. I can't say I love this one but its unique and that attracts me.

I really love the Ocean Waves though. :) Thanks again for this sharing!!!

  2. Love the last quilt...the polka dot mourning print grabs me! Gray and yellow are a very "modern" combination...interesting. Like Karen though the ocean waves is my fav!

  3. I love the striking graphics created by the color combination in the last quilt.
As far as that pink quilt goes for a QAL inspiration, I will give you my 2 cents worth. Does it need to be shrunk down? Just shrink down the sashing or remove it altogether. There are cute little stars in the center and there would be an interesting secondary pattern formed by the other pieces. I think it would be very interesting.
I think your favorite is also my favorite, but for a different reason. I gravitate to the simple, straightforward quilts. Maybe because I know they are within my skill level! : )

  5. You keep showing that Carolina Lily, could it be at your house now? I love it but I can never make all those points work out. Next year I am growing some corn, you will have to share your secret.

  6. More fantastic quilts. There was a basket quilt on ebay recently that was very similar. I thought it was fun because of the missing, or lack of, handles. Great puss in the corner with that double pink sashing, and lacey printed fabric. Personally, I like the combination on the last quilt. Quirky always draws me in.

  7. Wonderful quilts! I saw that Ocean Waves quilt at Sister's and told my Sister that our 3rd Great Grandma made one when she was 90 years old with over 1,000 pieces in it. Such tiny hand quilting.

  8. what great quilts! I love to see those that are so different from what we expect to see...no handle baskets, and the colors in the last one are great!! Haven't seen them used before but I love it

  9. Wow!!! What an amazing display of antique quilts! I too love the Improved 9-Patch in madders. The Ocean Wave is wonderful. The oldest one I know of that is documented is in the Mary and Albert Silber collection, made in 1840, so the story with the one at Sister's could be true. Mine was made in 1863-1864, so the pattern is very old. You're right about the Wild Goose Chase color scheme, very unusual, but I like it a lot. I can see how you'd see it across the street and want a closer look. It sounds like the old joke..."why did the quilter cross the road?"

  11. I enjoyed these pictures all SO VERY much!! Especially the first 2 and your closeups of the quilting. I like that color combination in the last quilt - I think it's the yellow that makes it work. The one that's just a top is marvelous - so bold! Oh, and I like the soft pink blocks too - I'd be up for a quiltalong with those blocks! Thanks for sharing these!

  12. I remember looking forward to seeing the antique quilts for sale at Sisters Quilt Show--one of my favorite parts of the day. Thanks for sharing your pics of these beautiful quilts. The blue/grey/chrome wild goose chase quilt is exceptional, but if it was re-done in too modern of a fabric, it would lose it's charm I think.

  13. I loved all of them! It would be so hard to make a decision of which to buy.
I think the no handled baskets were great colors.
I do like the last quilt. It's interesting how graphic it is from a distance and how almost plain the block is up close. It made me think "I could do that"!
