Happy December!

I was able to get the binding ready before traveling to my daughters for Thanksgiving and got it completed! YAY!

Love this little conversation print. 

In case you don't remember I summitted Mt St Helens and this sewalong came on the heels of that accomplishment. I got that done the same way we get our quilts done- one step at a time, one patch at a time. 

I would usually put a repro on the back but felt like this was more appropriate!

Summit Stitches Reveal

You should have 5 sawtooth stars. 

And 20 twenty 16 patches (and a few extra leftover 4 patches if you were speedy) 

All of these should measure 4 1/2"

 

Lay them out like this.

And sew them together like this. YAY!

Your center should measure 20 1/2" square

I am choosing to border mine like the original, (will show at the end of this post)  but you can certainly finish it however you'd like.

I'm adding a red, shirting and goldish brown border.

They are all cut 1 1/2".

RED: cut two- 20 1/2"x 1 1/2" strips

cut two 22 1/2" x1 1/2" strips

Add to opposite sides of the quilt, press and add the 22 1/2" to the other two sides. Press

SHIRTING: cut two 22 1/2" x 1 1/2" strips

cut two 24 1/2" x1 1/2" strips

Add to opposite sides, pressing before adding the other 2 sides.

BROWN: cut two 24 1/2" x 1 1/2" strips

cut two 26 1/2" x1 1/2" strips.

Add to opposite sides, pressing before adding the other 2 sides.

Press quilt .It should measure 26 1/2" square. 

Ta-Da! Admire your sweet quilt!

I picked up this little charmer in Houston 2 years ago. Blocks are old (1880-1910) but newly bordered and finished. 

The maker opted to miter the border, but I didn't see a need to. 

Isn't is adorable?!

Step by step, just like I got to the top of Mt St Helens is how you get this little quilt with little pieces done! I have the perfect backing. I'll talk about quilting in another post. 

If you made 320 four patches like Ursula, here is a lovely option! She had not seen the original and I just love her version!

STOP THE PRESSES! Summit Stitches part 3

 Feel free to pull your hair out, scream at me, never read my blog again! 

In testing they always say your first answer is usually correct..well, 

My first post said we needed 80 four patches, then I corrected it to be 320.

When I was sewing 320 four patches, I thought, "Is this actually right?" NO it wasn't! But I am going to have a lot of little 4 patches left over and you may too. 320 is the amount of 1.5 squares we needed. Geez Louise!

I have made small errors before in the sewalong but I am considering this one a very LARGE   error.

I'm so sorry!

You still need only 5 sawtooth stars from part 2. 

I was going to wait to put this out on Monday but today is a good day to move forward.

Using your 4 patches we will now make a 16 patch. Keep your lights in the same position when sewing them together.

These should measure 4 1/2" and you will need 20 of them.

So sorry about that mistake. Thankfully 4 patches are fun to use!

Summit Stitches Part 2

This is the original star in the quilt. I've cropped it close, but yes, the tips are cut off a little. 

Let's make one!

You should be able to click on that and make it larger. 

Here is the background square cut on the diagonal twice.

Lay your pieces out

I start with the flying geese sections, lining up one side as seen in the photo, 

Sew, then press and add the other side. I take a tiny bit less than a 1/4" seam allowance. This piece, when sewn should measure 2 1/2" x 1 1/2". 

Then assemble in rows. 

This is how I press

Ta-Da! Your block should measure 4 1/2"

Admire your sweet block then make 4 more for a total of 5. I will be using the same blue in all of my blocks.

Summit Stitches Part 1 continued

I wanted to give you a few more closeups of the original little quilt. I'm making sure to add a few homespuns!

And sweet directional fabric. 

 

When I ran out of squares I wanted to use, I started using the 1 1/2" strips. I was hoping to get these sewn before heading to Houston but my flight leaves so early I had to get ready for bed super early!

The 4 patches are so cute! 

I've been on a sewing hiatus over summer and it is such a nice way to get back into the sewing rhythm. 

I'm hoping to have a little get together on Thursday if you'll be in Houston! Let me know!!

Summit Stitches 2025 quiltalong

Hey quilt friends! You ready for a fall quiltalong? I know you have a lot of choices and a lot of projects, but I hope you'll jump in!


I'm calling it Summit Stitches. You know how I got to the summit of Mt St Helens? One step at a time! We will take the sewalong slow and steady just like that hike. (I'm still in a bit of recovery mode!)

How sweet is this?

Does anybody else have 1 1/2" strips or squares? I'll hunt through this bag first. That is the size we will use. 

Normally I have my quilt made ahead of the quiltalong, but this year I'm making it with you, although I own the vintage little quilt. 

Our little quilt, when completed, will measure approx 25" square. 

You may even have little 4 patches made and tucked away in your sewing room. This is how we are going to start. Let's make some 4 patches!

You can use light/dark like the 2 above but you can also use mediums as well. I think mixing it up adds interest. We are not going to be in a hurry, but we are making 80 of them! Don't let that scare you off.

Press toward the dark, spin the seams if you want. Your 4 patches should measure 2 1/2".
