I've got all my blocks made for the Lincoln quilt! 36 each. I need to focus on the next part of the Liberty quilt. Trying to stay one step ahead of everyone hasn't been easy! By the way, I love what I'm seeing!! You ladies are really meeting the challenge in a great way!!

Speaking of the Liberty quilt. We have quite a few flying geese to make  so I thought I'd show you an easy way- with the sizes you need to end up with four (4)  4 1/2"x2 1/2" unfinished flying geese block.

I always get confused at to what part is the "goose". The center is the goose and you'll need a dark 

print cut 5 1/4". For the "wings?" you'll need four (4) 2 7/8" light squares. 

My fabric isn't a very good representation because they are almost both mediums. 

 Lay 2 squares on the diagonal of the large square. Draw and center line and sew a scant 1/4" seam on both sides, then cut on the line. Press the geese "wings" away from the dark.

 Place the remaining squares as shown. Draw a line on the center and sew on both sides, then trim.

Press and trim to 4 1/2"x 2 1/2"

Easy huh? I'm sure most of you have done this, but sometimes it is nice to have a reminder.

It's been a terrific week! It looks like a tiny glimmer of spring in the forecast! I see daffodils coming up in my yard!! Whoop! Whoop!

Sewing this Week

I thought I'd start out with an eagle quilt since we are coming fast on the USA Independence Day. I made this quilt in 2003 and 2004, so it's an oldie.

More flying geese were on this week's sewing agenda.

 I came across this one yesterday.... 

 Geez, it isn't even the same fabric! LOL  I didn't bat an eye, just continued on my humble way.

 I chained pieced 10 at a time. cut...

 pressed.....

 Added the next square....

 And sewed them in groups of 10. 

They need trimming which I can do while watching TV. 

I realized I made about 30+ more than I needed! That's annoying!

Easy Flying Geese

Happy Wednesday! Part of our Fall Festival assignment this month was making flying geese for the sashing. I am doing mine like Jan did hers. Using the same background and changing the center colors. Since mine are not going to be scrappy I am using the no waste method method. (I've always called it that) This will make 4 identical flying geese units.
I'm sure many of you do it this way, but this is for those of you that don't have a clue what I'm talking about.

For the Fall Festival quilt our finished flying geese blocks will be 4"x2". My background is green. The center/colored part is black.

From your background (mine is green) add 7/8" to your finished size, which means I will cut four (4) 2 7/8" squares of background/green.

From the colored fabric we will add 1 1/4" to the finished width of the block, so we will cut a square 5 1/4".
(the finished width is 4"+ 1 1/4= 5 1/4")

 Put 2 squares of background as shown in the photo. I use my Hera marker to draw a line down the center of both smaller squares. Sew a scant 1/4" on both sides and trim on the line.  press towards the small triangles. 

 Add the other 2 squares of background as show. Draw another line down the center and sew 1/4" or a tad smaller on each side of the line. Cut on the line.  Press...

Ta-Da! Trim to 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" and set them aside for when we assemble our Fall Festival quilt. 

The Geese Are Flying!

I have been making progress this week but it seems very slow. Here are 104 flying geese ready to be trimmed. Because these are fairly small I used this method at Patchpieces. I cut my squares out one day, marked them in the evening watching tv. Sewed them the next day, cut and pressed. The next night I lined them up ready to sew, and today this is what I have!! I still have the rest of the sawtooth star pieces to cut but that should go quickly.

My plans this weekend was to go to Washington state and visit my dad and stepmom and help them around the house. My sister and her hubby were going too. I call it a work weekend. I also prepped some handwork to take. Unfortunately my dad called my sister last night and my stepmom woke up with the flu. I've made alternate plans for tomorrow which include a quilt show!! Woo-Hoo! (although I do hope my stepmom is feeling better soon)

It's a blustery night and high school homecoming. My nephew, who lived with us for several years is on the homecoming court. My hubby is driving him and his princess in and I'll stand in as "parent" of the senior. We are excited for him although it's going to be a cold night!!
