Cultural Fusion Quilts- Giveaway

Wow! I've been blown away by the wonderful photos and terrifically written reviews of Sujata's Cultural Fusion Quilts book. I have to admit I'm a bit intimidated. But in the usual Humble Quilts style, here I go!

I was sent the ebook and this photo caught my eye as I made my way through the book.
(The Root Connection in Cultural Fusion Quilts) In India, string banners, known as torans, are used during cultural celebrations to create arches in doorways and pathways to welcome
guests. Torans made from fresh leaves and marigolds strung on cotton
strings adorn the doorways of private homes on a daily basis.

It immediately reminded me of this:

It isn't a celebration toran but laundry flapping and waving in the breeze on top of home in Guatemala. I was just there and was fascinated by this.

Sujata's Quilt "Toran"

My mini version. Doesn't look a thing like hers! lol
I used her assembly instructions and it really went together easily. They were wonderful instructions. I didn't use any pins to sew these parts together. Sujata gave great tips for free form piecing.

If you look back at her Toran quilt you will see the quilting is  an important aspect of this quilt. I tried to mimic that with wavy quilting using my walking foot. Again, it wasn't as nearly as effective, but I now have my own little quilt to remind me of the waving colors on the rooftops of Guatemala.

You will have plenty of chances to win  Cultural Fusion Quilts. Leave a comment to win on my blog. If you are in the United States you will win a hard copy. If you are outside the states you can win an ebook. I will draw a name on December 11th. Good Luck!

Wool Applique "Flowers"

I got my flowers quilt back from the quilters and finally got a chance to look at it up close and personal.

Thanks Kat for doing such a beautiful job of quilting! It's suits the quilt perfectly.

I brought it downstairs and trimmed it up. Next to make binding and apply it. (not my favorite part)

I'll get a full on shot soon!

Thank you for your kind words about the quilts I display during the holidays.

Tomorrow I'm having a Saturday blog post featuring Sujata's new book , "Cultural Fusion"! Please check it out and enter to win yourself a copy.

It's Beginning to look a Little Like Christmas!

Yesterday we had an ice storm so I went to work for a short time then came straight home and spent the day taking down fall decor and starting my Christmas/winter decor.
I'm sure you've seen these quilts before, but I enjoy revisiting them so I hope you will too.

Here's a lighted cut-out we got from Ikea a couple of weeks ago. It is so cute!

I start by slinging the larger quilts over the banister. behind them is a pile of little quilts,  wall hangings, and wool applique.
Guest bedroom. Simple decor as the red quilts get all the attention in here. The 12 days of Christmas designed by Cheri hangs above.
I was so excited to get my red and green one back on my bed. I love it! The Kansas Troubles quilt ended up going downstairs.
This "Let it Snow" quilt usually takes center stage downstairs. This year I can enjoy it when I wake up in the morning and lay my head down at night.
I cannot remember when I finished this as I didn't sign it! I think it was late 2013. I don't love it that much and plan on giving it away this year.
The top of the table is decorated now as well, mostly with candles.

My little Nisse at home on Cascadia

The little quilt was made by Dorothy R. I LOVE it!

WARNING: If a ribbon is wrapped around your candle it is best to remove it before lighting the candle!

Have you started to decorate? We don't have a tree yet, but will soon.

Flags of the American Revolution Month 4

Send me your photos if you do not have a blog- we want to see the blocks we haven't seen yet!
Whiskey Rebellion was our block to do in November and it was a doozy!
And three pieced sawtooth star blocks.  The shadow in the photo makes mine look red but they are brown and black.

Here is Cathy's eagle block. Nice work!
And one of her sawtooth stars. Love that stripe! I wish I would have thought of that.

This is a close up of Terry's star. Lovely!
And although Terry didn't get the appliqued block complete she sewed all 5 sawtooth blocks.  Way to go Terry!
Elaine is very close to being all caught up!
Elaine's flag blocks

For the month of December we will work on the crescents- these sew up very quickly so don't be overwhelmed.  Blocks 12- Fort Moultrie (liberty moon)  and Block 14- Crescents of South Carolina. Then at least get your backgrounds cut and your applique pieces prepped for 3 of the 5 Star and Moon setting blocks. Keep the blocks with you so you can take a few stitches when you find yourself waiting.
