I need to try and clean it up a bit but the piecing is very good and it lays nice and flat. It's got great fabric in it.

This is fascinating. I'm intrigued by the piecing pattern and the border fabric is luscious. Totally interesting. Unique. Definitely unique. That's what I love about antique quilts. The way you can find something so super unique. One of a kind hugs, *karendianne.

what a great quilt top this is and i agree that border fabric is very cool. the great thing about hand quilting these old tops is that you get to slowly go over every inch as you stitch.

That quilt is really something. The borders are definitely attention getters. Unique, colorful, inventive, anything goes. I would love to feel free enough and confident to put fabrics together like that, with no hesitation and no worry that I'm doing it wrong.
The border fabric looks very familiar, but maybe I'm just comparing it to the look of clamshells sewn together.
That is a fabulous print that looks like a clamshell. According to Meller & Elffers page 217:
"These overlapping arcs are known as the [scale], clamshell pattern the the scallop pattern..The design is ancient and universal,. found in Roman mosaics, Oriental brocades..." Looks about 1880-1910 to me. I bet the outer border is from the same era. They liked some wild furnishing fabrics (upholstery fabrics) but didn't think them appopriate for quilts, which is why we don't see them much.

I was on-line fabric shopping the other day and found some fabric that reminded me of the border fabric on this top!!! I bought it for backing for a quilt that I'm planning for my son and his future wife! When I get it, I post a pic. The colors are different, but I really like it.
