Here is my purchase from Sisters on the day of the show. It is a top with a mix of fabric, predominately double pink and Lancaster blue.
The border print really caught my eye.
I can't seem to find much information on this border as far as what it is called and approximate year. Any clues on that would be appreciated.
Do you see the outermost border? It looks like drapery fabric and I'm sure it was added on at a later date.
I need to try and clean it up a bit but the piecing is very good and it lays nice and flat. It's got great fabric in it.
Thank you all who entered into my giveaway! I really wish I had something for everyone. It was fun to visit many new-to-me blogs. Please feel free to leave a comment any time. I love hearing from you!
The winner of the book and little quilt is Pam from Just Me. Please check out her blog too. She does wonderful quilts and has quite a green thumb!! Pam, please send me an email and I'll get your package ready to mail.

Stay cool!
This is fascinating. I'm intrigued by the piecing pattern and the border fabric is luscious. Totally interesting. Unique. Definitely unique. That's what I love about antique quilts. The way you can find something so super unique. One of a kind hugs, *karendianne.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Pam. The fabric looks to me like Liberty fabric. Wonderful quilt.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabrics, I am sure you will make this quilt come alive when quilted.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if you would take a look at my latest post 7/21/11 www.sugarlandQuilts.com, I have pictures of two quilts that my husband inherited with no label. A red and white and blue and white, I can't identify the patterns. Would really appreciate if you could take a quick look and give me your imput.

what a great quilt top this is and i agree that border fabric is very cool. the great thing about hand quilting these old tops is that you get to slowly go over every inch as you stitch.

ReplyDeleteWhat a neat purchase! That border print is fabulous! (I'd like to order a few yards!) Don't you wish you could meet the woman who pieced it and ask her about it?
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice quilt top to find! I agree that the fabrics are very pretty. I so love your red/white double Irish chain. Well done! Are you going to fix the boo-boo, or leave it in? I vote for toille backing. ;-)

Lucky Pam!
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt in pinks and blues. Surely an interesting fabric for the border!
That old top was a great find. Those fabrics are really interesting together with that border. Could the border fabric be English?
ReplyDeleteWow, that border fabric is amazingly beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Pam.
OMGoodness, Lori, the border caught my eye right away, but that color combo: so fresh! I will have to keep it in mind... thanks for sharing Lori, and congrats Pam!
ReplyDeleteLucky Pam. I'm sure she'll enjoy her winnings.
ReplyDeleteThat quilt is really something. The borders are definitely attention getters. Unique, colorful, inventive, anything goes. I would love to feel free enough and confident to put fabrics together like that, with no hesitation and no worry that I'm doing it wrong.
The border fabric looks very familiar, but maybe I'm just comparing it to the look of clamshells sewn together.
That is a fabulous print that looks like a clamshell. According to Meller & Elffers page 217:
ReplyDelete"These overlapping arcs are known as the [scale], clamshell pattern the the scallop pattern..The design is ancient and universal,. found in Roman mosaics, Oriental brocades..." Looks about 1880-1910 to me. I bet the outer border is from the same era. They liked some wild furnishing fabrics (upholstery fabrics) but didn't think them appopriate for quilts, which is why we don't see them much.

What a great quilt!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Pam.
Such a pretty quilt!
ReplyDeleteHugs - Lurline♥
Oh very fun quilt!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a fun purchase. Are you going to quilt the top or leave it as is?
ReplyDeleteMorning Lori,
ReplyDeleteI was on-line fabric shopping the other day and found some fabric that reminded me of the border fabric on this top!!! I bought it for backing for a quilt that I'm planning for my son and his future wife! When I get it, I post a pic. The colors are different, but I really like it.
Blessings
