Infinite Variety

Infinite Variety is a quote from Shakespeare basically saying Cleopatra  can never grow "stale" with "custom" (familiarity); her charms never fade, they only, in their infinite variety, grow more compelling with time.
These quilts definitely have grown more compelling. I couldn't think of a more fitting name for this wonderful exhibit.
I hope you haven't grown weary of seeing the red and white quilts from the armory. I've shown some quilts from the Folk Art Museum but was working my way to the red and white exhibit.
What greeted us at the door was mind boggling.
The simple quilts can be as effective as the more elaborate.
My daughter pointed this one out as a favorite. It's a simple block but logistically the negative-positive would make it very hard to assemble.
This is one of my favorites. I like that the sashing doesn't meet perfectly and it has three borders, only two of them the same.
I had to throw in another photo from NYC. Who is walking who?

  5. Can't tire of these quilts! Great shots! I'm hearing a lot about it, too. At my quilt meeting yesterday someone said there weren't many (or any?) white gloves. A woman viewing the show actually grabbed a quilt to snuggle it! She said there was a collective GASP from other viewers and one woman actually followed her saying "she did it". Someone listening to this story said the snuggler should have been tackled and branded with a "T" for "touching"! That got a good laugh.

  6. Yes! I thought the title for the show was just perfect!
The basket positve/negative was one of my top two faves.
Can't stop thinking about this show, right?!

  8. How can we ever get tired of these pictures?
It was amazing to see the same quilts from far! Each of them looked completely different and made me wonder if I saw them from up close!
The positive and negative space was definitely doing the trick.
I do think that the title was quite appropriate too!

  10. I for one do not get tired of seeing those red & white quilts. Different bloggers have focused on different quilts. I don't have an I-pad or I could download and see them all.
Are you intrigued by one of the quilts so much that you want to attempt your own version of it? I so like the one I saw referenced as the rickrack quilt. Just bands of curved red down the quilt and fantastic quilting.

  11. I have definitely not grown tired of seeing these magnificant quilts. Each blogger who has featured photos of this exhibition shows different quilts, so it is always exciting to pick the ones I haven't seen before.
It really has only spurred on my inspiration to make one, thankyou for sharing your day at the exhibit with us! The guy with the cat on his head is very unique, I doubt my cat would appreciate being taking for a walk like that!!!!

  15. Can never get enough of these images...those of us who could not be there so appreciate your sharing the experience. As incredible as the spiraling display must have been, it is the circle of chairs with the folded quilts that speaks to me more than anything. So symbolic - so beautiful in its simplicity...
