Tuesday, Tuesday!

We are sewing up a storm! For those of you that have asked we are away from the snow storm bearing down on the east coast. Stay safe dear friends if you are affected.

My baskets and Blooms top is together! I kept it simple and love the setting.
Here are the jewel box blocks I made from Jill's stash. I made as many as I could with the blue I had. See something missing?

I was ONE block short! Made me cry actually thinking that Jill is no longer with us and I feel one block short without her! I thought it was very appropriate to work on this quilt with good quilting friends.
So, I have a favor......
Is there any chance someone has a 2 1/2" x 15" strip of the blue that they would send me?
After reading the terrific and thoughtful comments I have decided to make a rogue block using similar color but different fabric. Thank you to those who have offered the Lancaster fabric.
We have also been able to enjoy some fresh mountain air complete with waterfall!

I've loved reading your blessings comments on the magazine giveaway. Please understand that I am retreating and will only be answering emails intermittently.
You can follow me on instagram and see more of what is going on here in
North Carolina Quilt Villa.

If you are in the way of the snow storm- stay safe! We are fine.

  1. Baskets and blooms is so pretty! Sorry, but I don't have the blue - surely someone will be able to send it to you. What a lovely, scenic view!

  3. Baskets & blooms is beautiful Lori. You know it may be fate that you are one block short? Have you considered making that last block with a similar blue fabric then whenever you see this it will be an added reminder of your dear friend Jill.

  4. I also LOVE your Basket and Blooms quilt! At first I thought you were leaving the missing block out to represent Jill being missed! I thought it was touching...(it's just a thought to leave it plain...)
Big hug...it must have been difficult making that quilt!

  5. Just my own humble opinion here, but I would also use just a solid blue in that corner, representing a friend who is no longer here. Maybe embroider or pen your details right there instead of on the back. Other than that, I'm sure someone has that fabric. I know I used to have it. Looks like a VIP. Enjoy your stay at the cabin! We're up here in Ct. and getting slammed with snow and wind. Cannot see out our windows with screens since they are plastered full of the white stuff! Keeping our feathered friends fed tho. Feeders are VERY busy.

  6. Baskets and blooms is very pretty. The simple setting lets the blocks shine!
I am smitten by the Jewel Box quilt with blue as the background. It has always been a favorite pattern (so why haven't I made one yet?), but I have never seen it with a colored background. I like it very much!
Are you familiar with the little booklet Jill wrote for Windham Fabrics titled something like "Tips For Creating An Authentic Looking Vintage Quilt" ?
She sent me a copy a few years ago. The second tip on the list reads "Include a maverick square of a similar fabric occasionally. When our ancestors ran out of a certain print, they added a different one." If you cannot find more of this fabric (I looked, and I don't have it), you can follow Jill's own instructions. Just a thought. Either way, that quilt is a sweet tribute and a wonderful reminder of your dear friend, whom you miss terribly.

  7. I love both your tops! As well as your gorgeous setting. NC is beautiful!

The Jewel Box is very dear to you, I'm sure. Will you add borders to it? I like Janet O's suggestion above from Jill's own booklet.

Have fun on your retreat and wave at me as you fly out of Charlotte; you'll be passing right over my house no doubt.

  8. I wonder how many of us just went through our stash thinking of Jill. I still have the fabric from her stash separate from mine. I can't seem to bring myself to put it away. Unfortunately I don't have the fabric you are looking for, but I love the ideas you are getting to make a "maverick" block. That is so signature Jill! Our blizzard turned out to be a bust, but enough for a snow day for me so I am headed to my sewing room to work on the binding of my "Jill Quilt". Enjoy the rest of your retreat week. Looks like a lot of fun!

  9. It is a wonderful little quilt you are making in memory of Jill. While I did not know her, I knew her quilts! I think the blue fabric might be the old P&B "seaweed" that they produced in many colors and for Many years! However, the piece I found is slightly different in that it also has tiny blue dots scattered amongst the tiny white dots. Happy to send you some if you want it, tho I agree with previous comments about using a different fabric in remembrance of Jill and perhaps making your label there? Intend to keep looking in my stash today..........huge snowstorm blowing outside and predicted to last until late evening! Living here in New England means we are aware and prepared for such events and hunkering down to ride out a storm can actually be enjoyable (as long as no untoward events occur!). I tell my customers who ask if I stay open during the winter that "Maine does not close down for the winter"! However, there are some days when it is in everyone's best interests to close and stay home and let the snowplows clear the roads without having to deal with traffic.

  11. Your baskets and blooms is so pretty; I love the setting. So sorry I don't have that blue in my stash but I agree that you should add a block with a similar blue. I like to call them thinking patches because they make others think about why the block is different and it also serves as a remembrance. Whatever you decide it will certainly be a special quilt.

  12. If Bonnie had a similar blue fabric, it would work to fill in the missing block. I don't have that print either. Sorry you are missing your friend. I thought of Pam Bono this week when her name came up on my FB Friends who have Birthday's list. I just can't DELETE them off my FB, even though they are gone to sew with the angels.

  19. Love your Baskets and Bloom quilt! The simplicity of it is just perfect.:) I really need to get working on my Baskets Galore blocks too. Jill's quilt is great, so scrappy and cozy looking.

  20. Both of your quilts are lovely. Such great colors, especially love the soft brown (I think) setting triangles around your Baskets and Blooms quilt. The setting worked out great!

    Enjoy your time away!

  21. I think the rogue block is a perfect idea. I am excited that I tracked down the August/September 2009 Quilters Newsletter Magazine so I can make the quilt your late friend Jill had in there. She was a terrific quilt designer and sounds like a terrific friend. You have done a good job sharing her memory with your "virtual" friends. Thanks for that.

  25. Hi Lori! Every time I see a new quilt from you I think, Oh this one is my Favorite. I love the Baskets quilt, of course. It s so original and interesting. The blue quilt is beautiful and such a touching story about your dear friend. I have blues to offer, but not that exact one. I like the rogue block idea best anyway.

  27. “There is nothing that can replace the absence of someone dear to us, and one should not even attempt to do so. One must simply hold out and endure it. At first that sounds very hard, but at the same time it is also a great comfort. For to the extent the emptiness truly remains unfilled one remains connected to the other person through it. It is wrong to say that God fills the emptiness. God in no way fills it but much more leaves it precisely unfilled and thus helps us preserve -- even in pain -- the authentic relationship. Further more, the more beautiful and full the remembrances, the more difficult the separation. But gratitude transforms the torment of memory into silent joy. One bears what was lovely in the past not as a thorn but as a precious gift deep within, a hidden treasure of which one can always be certain.”

  28. Lori, I love the idea of making a rogue block given how emotional this quilt must be for you. I'm glad you were able to sew it with friends around you. If however you ever want more of that blue, it is one of my favorites and I have several yards that you are welcome to.

  29. Your Baskets and Blooms quilt is simply gorgeous. Sometimes simple is best.

My condolences on the death of your friend. Your finishing her quilt is a lovely tribute.
I like Dietrich Bonhoeffer's quote that Lynn posted.

  30. Your Baskets and Blooms top is so beautiful. The colors are so soothing. As I read through the comments I saw the one about Jill's own advise. I am so glad that you are going to add a rogue block in the top. I am sure Jill is smiling. Hugs
