Gwennie Inspired Medallion Finale

Can you believe we made it to the final month of the Gwen Marston Inspired Medallion Quilt-a-Long?!
What a terrific suggestion Cynthia!
As a reminder, the center theme was basket, the next round, childhood memories, followed by log cabin, stars, then fishy related.
Here we go!

My final border was inspired by an antique quilt with a scalloped border. I love scallops, so I thought it was perfect for this quilt. I finished it off with a bold RED statement that I thought tied in the center colors as well. (bottom right is where I substituted a different fabric- I can hardly tell!)
What a very rarely ever do, is unstitch. But this was how it was first and I just didn't like it at all. Those corners were ugly, not liberated!
Vickie B managed to find some adorable mermaid fabric to use in her quilt.

Here is Pierrete's medallion. She used fish fabric and sea fabric. Love the buoy and anchor!
Sally finished hers with a bold pieced border! Looks fantastic!
Here is Ursula's terrific medallion. The blue background for the fish is great!

I'm planning on leaving the link open for the month of October. So please add your quilt when it is complete. Or send me a photo!

  4. Such creativity in how you decided to do the "fish" border. I don't think I would have thought of scallops as a solution but fits perfectly.
I was participating in the medallion but just could not move beyond a certain point. I kept my piece on the design wall for at least two months and it kept telling me it wanted to stay the size it was. So I listened.

  9. Lovely quilts, each one of them. So much imagination went into the making of these quilts and each one is so personal and interesting as the creator is too, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing all of these and looking forward to discover more beauties. ;^)

  10. Your scalloped border was a clever idea for a fishy ending. You had a great make do approach.

  11. I love those scallops! I think this fishy border has been the most fun to see all the creative solutions to the theme.

  12. Lori, thank you and also many thanks to the others you pulled together for this fun QAL! This was my first one I've participated in and had lots of fun and challenges with the themes. Especially when I decided to do three as my first design wasn't as liberated as I thought it should have been. Can't wait to see what everyone else has come up with. I think it will take several days to enjoy them all. Now to start quilting all these beauties.

  14. Congratulations, Lori, it looks wonderful! And that was definitely the right choice on the corners. My corners have been troublesome too.

Sally's pieced blocks look like some Orca Bay leftovers -- would that be right? Very fishy! I love Pierette's appliqued fish along the bottom there, and Ursula's offset layout is perfectly balanced too.

Thanks to everyone involved. What a creative challenge this has been!

  16. I am always fascinated to see how differently a theme can be interpreted. Some very creative work here!
I think changing the corners on your final border was a good call--gives a more defined finish.

  19. Oh, Lori, you are so brave with color. Those big red scallops are just gorgeous and work wonderfully well with the rest of your quilt. I'm with you, I would have changed the first scalloped border, too. I think your solution is perfect. Well done!

Thanks so much for hosting this quilt along. It's been fun, challenging, and interesting.

  20. I have so enjoyed watching these wonderful and very unique quilts develop! Each one displays its own maker. The collection is a great tribute to Gwen. They all display what she's always telling us, "Make your OWN quilts." Love yours. The scallops really pull it all together.

  27. Everyone's medallions are wonderful, so personal and unique. Love your scallop border, echoing the scallops on the urn. I also enjoy its bright, happy, not-so-traditional colors. [Tho the design would be wonderful in red/ cheddar/ poison green! Or in dark repros, too.]

  29. Wow all the quilts that are linked up are amazing! I see quite a few I wish I had made! I just finished up my stars today and now I'm not sure what to do for fishy related but something will pop into my head. Thanks for such a fun QAL. I learned a lot about myself and my preferences doing this quilt!

  30. I think you made the right decision on replacing your corner scallop - it looks much better now.

Wow, what a lot of beautiful, liberated medallions! I think we all "done good". :) Thank you so much for hosting this quilt along. It was so much fun, and now I've got (almost) 2 wonderful quilts that I love. It's been a challenge, but so worth it! Thank you!
