Bayeux Tapestry

We stayed in the darling Normandy town of Bayeux where the historical, amazing and epic Bayeux Tapestry is on display. It is an embroidered piece of astonishing art! (Not woven)

The entire tapestry is 70 meters long (229 feet!) with the entire story of the conquest of England in 1066!

They have eliminated any photo taking so I bought a few postcards and scanned them.

The detail is incredible!

We had headphones so we could listen to the story and look at specific scenes. I was blown away!

Now, I looked on the web site and you can look at it up close and personal and read the story right here on the web!

I did a little screen shot of the two scenes above.

The museum will be closed for tapestry renovation starting September 1, 2025-October 2027. I feel fortunate to have seen it in person.

What is cool is you can explore it online at this link- HERE.

Okay I may have shared some of these photos already but I'm going to do it again.
Bayeux  was a charming little town that we stayed in.

Morning moon from our room window.

This obviously was the carb table! lol What I miss the most is the homemade yogurt! I made some after getting home and it was delicious!

Afternoon shot out our window. I think every morning was a "pinch me" morning! Like "Am I really here?"

This was the alley leading to our hotel- Lion D' Oro. The Golden Lion. I'm sure there is a story.

More of Bayeux:

This is where the tapestry is on display.

Cool roundabout soldier

Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. I read about that tapestry a few years ago so thank for the reminder. There is an amazing tapestry in Scotland that was inspired by this work. You should see if you ever get to Edinburgh. Looks like a wonderful trip.

  2. I heard that Bayeux was the first city the Allied forces liberated in World War II. When I first visited France, I fell in love with Bayeux. I think I could live there!

  7. Such an interesting post. The tapestry looks amazing! The town looks pretty incredible too - I must plan to visit. There is a a quilter I follow on instagram - @password_quilt who made a small appliqued wallhanging inspired by this tapestry. Heike did an amazing job of recreating details as well as her beautiful handquilting.
