Houston- Clear for Take Off!

As part of the education team for Quilt Festival Houston I am prepping already!

First up, choosing a pattern and fabric for a garment. Always difficult for me, since I'm not a garment maker. Using quilters cotton is another factor that doesn't help me make pattern decisions easily. But that part is done.
I'm making a dress this year! It'll probably end up being more like a tunic on me.

Including the eagles, for sure. You'll have to wait and see about the rest.
This is called Road Trip by Andover.

And we had swatches for the second choice, metropolis by Moda.
That was actually really nice to see the actual fabric.

Did you know you could be prepping too? They have the class schedule online right now for planning purposes. The class book is huge and takes many nights to get a good look at all the classes and lectures.

You can see it HERE.

Even though I'll be working, we can take up to 1 1/2 days of classes. I'm considering a half day class with Maria Shell. If you've taken a class or lecture with her can you give me your opinion?

I'm going out on a limb here and saying that I like to learn new things and what she does isn't what I do, but what I don't like is when modern quilters think what they are doing is so much better than "traditional" quilters. I don't want to take a class from a teacher with a huge ego.

I'm also considering a bus tour to Texas Quilt Museum in LaGrange or Galveston.

TEXAS QUILT MUSEUM, SIGHTSEEING, & QUILT SHOPS TOUR

HISTORIC GALVESTON & QUILT SHOPS TOUR
I did finally get to see some of Texas when I went to Victoria via Austin, but that is the only time I've been outside of downtown Houston. I'd love your thoughts.

Have a wonderful day!

  1. I think you will be very pleased with Maria Snell. I've talked with her thru email a couple of times she is very approachable. I would love to take a class with her.

  3. I always wanted to go to the TX quilt museum, but never made it while we lived there. I have been to Galveston and that is super interesting. Either one would be a good choice!

  5. I used to sew most of my clothes, but I think it has been almost 20 years since I made anything to wear! And using quilter's cotton would definitely be a challenge.
I am not familiar with Maria Shell, but I think I understand what you are saying about the type of teacher you DON'T want.
Wow--it would be tough to choose between your two bus tour options. They both sound very interesting, and fun.

  6. I've made a lot of clothes but never with fabric as interesting as that eagle fabric! I'm so excited to be coming to Houston this year - I hope I can see you and say hi as well. The Texas Quilt museum sounds pretty interesting. I better go look at the offerings :0)

  7. I strongly recommend you go with both those class selections. First exposed to Maria last year as I spent a bit of time in each of her classes, I was excited by how she worked with color and design and would have gotten a lot from being a student. She is kind and eager to help students learn, not ego-driven. And you know Improv is NOT my style. The museum is a great visit as well as giving you a chance to see much more of Texas.

  8. The eagle fabric is very interesting. A very modern looking eagle for sure. I too would be stumped when it came to garment making for wearing at the show. I made clothing for years but long, long ago gave it up in favor of quilt making.

  9. What tunic pattern are you using? I have made three tunics recently.

  10. Lived in Galveston 10 years and found the Historic Part interesting.

But then again.... I like quilting and would want to see that Museum..... can you do BOTH??

  11. It's been soooo many years since I made any clothing! Quilting won me over and I never looked back. Love your fabric choices tho! And I hope you enjoy your classes. Maria Shell is a great read on her blog and in her book. Based on those, I would gladly take any of her classes!

  12. I did both of those tours when I was there in 2016. I went for 8 days so 2d touring was fine. I recommend them both!
