Strip Quilt Secrets- Unleashed! You have a chance to WIN!

Diane's new book hit the market a few a short weeks ago and I told her I'd love to be a part of a blog hop to help her promote it. I was happy to be a part of her first book release- her quilts and directions are fun and simple! (We made the house blocks from her first book!) She has given highlights on her blog and I would encourage you to take the time to read it. Check it out HERE.  Her secrets are revealed!!
While browsing through the book I noticed this toward the end. What size strips do you  need for which quilt. There are 2 pages of strip widths. I've saved strips but never really know what to do with them- well, here ya go!

I decided I'd do this quilt. I made the mistake of not reading the directions all the way through before starting. I realized there are 4 different blocks in this quilt! One more reason to love it even more.

I opted to make my centers all red like a traditional log cabin block and use my homespuns to
make it more masculine.

 Blocks A, B, C, D.
It would have been easier to make all A blocks, all B blocks, etc. That is how Diane wrote the directions. I wasn't sure how many blocks I was going to make so I opted to cut a bunch of strips and figure it out as I went.
The layout is light-dark-light, looking at the outermost strip.
These are 10" blocks and I made 5 of each. I wanted to make it a bit bigger...

Then I saw this "secret" at the bottom of the page. So, I made 10 more blocks.

And ended up with this lovely top! It is only 50x 60 so I will add a border, do a little meandering and send it to CA to be given to a Camp Fire survivor.

  26. Your quilt is awesome! I've been using Bonnie Hunter's Scrap User's System for some time, so I always check my precut bins before I cut from yardage. It's surprising how often I can get quite a way using my precuts. I do the same with HSTs and I love that!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I, too, save everything. I have not made a string quilt yet...these look really fun. Love how yours turned out!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I do save strips and usually make them into 9 patches or windmills. This book will give me more ideas. Thanks for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have boxes of strips and waiting for the right inspiration.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi Lori! Thanks for the book opportunity. A never ending topic is scraps for sure. I save scraps but do not cut up strips, at least not yet. I think I need to be more productive and accumulate more waste for strips. Enjoy your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I do save strips and strings and feel buried! This’s a good book for using some! Love your homespun top, so cozy!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I save selvage strips for friends, and have cut strips for specific quilt projects that are strip-set pieced, but don’t really have just precut strips, so after visiting all the blogs so far, I think I’m really behind!!! May have to remedy this!
Thanks for sharing, I’d love the book and ideas! And love your new quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Using your strips to comfort a stranger is such a sweet idea. I'm sure it will be treasured! I do save strips and every other manageable scrap that's worth saving! All other pieces go into a pillowcase beneath my table to make dog beds for the Humane Society.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Love your Echo quilt! I save strips but the sizes are random because I've always wanted to make a string quilt (or two). However, I do have a few jelly rolls waiting for inspiration!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love your new quilt :-) Plaids and lovely homey stripes always warm my heart. This will be an awesome gift for someone starting over. Warmth and love is hard to beat! Thank you for sharing it!
I have collected strips but mostly for strip piecing. This book looks so useful for ideas I have for my stash as I can cut it up into the strip sizes she uses. I have a cherished stash of homespuns, flannels and plaids that are meant for quilts like hers (and yours).

    ReplyDelete
  44. That is a cool quilt. Yes I do collect strips. I also have a stack of scraps ready to cut into strips and squares.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I cut strips from my leftover fabric, and arrange them by rainbow color. I usually hit these strips for our guild block of the month program, and sometimes for larger projects. The quilt you chose would be wonderful for these strips!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lori, Good looking quilt. Would like to win the book as I have strips cut but not organized as they should be. Bonnie Hunter has a chart showing what size strips and squares are in her quilts to give you more ideas. Iowa is wet and too warm for Jan,

  47. As a native Californian, first of all I want to say a heartfelt Thank you for your contribution to the Camp Fire survivors. My brother and his wife used to live in Paradise, so this tragedy hit very close to my heart.
I *do* quilt with strips very regularly, now that I've started making "braid" quilts and especially using strips to make little braid-pattern mug rugs. They are quick and look so cute and use up my random, leftover strips that aren't quite long enough for most patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  48. My string collection is a bit obsessive...and they make wonderful blocks and quilts! They are always the quilts that friends and family claim first.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I save strips in 1.5", 2", 2.5" & 3.5" as well as a basket of variable width strings. When I start a project, I often look first at the strip collection and pull relevant fabrics before cutting into yardage. I love scrappy quilts so the more fabrics there are, the merrier the quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I haven't collected any strips. I too am working on a masculine quilt. The Mr. picked the colors and I've cut all of the hexagons.
Thank you for sending your creation to Paradise. I sent a box of yardage, precuts and remnants to a quilt shop that is gathering donations for Paradise quilters.

  51. Great booo! I have strips of all sizes ready to be in a quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I like 2 and a half and one and a half inch strips that I can cut on my Sizzix. I often cut the 2 and a half into even segments for things like four patch, but good for rectangle pieces too.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I use all kinds of fabric scrap sizes, none are too particular. I've not worked with Only Strips and would love to start, I've been saving piles of them!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I love strips. I use 2-1/2”, 2”, 1-1/2”, and 1” strips. I make log cabin blocks mostly. Would love to win the book! Thanks for the chance to win!

  55. Hi Lori...I have oodles of strips which are begging to me assembled into a quilt! Thank you for the chance to win this sweet book.

    ReplyDelete
  56. What a fun quilt, easy, graphic and uses up those strips. I'm a string piecer vs a strip piecer most of the time and since I have her book already, please don't enter me into the draw.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh, man, do I collect strips!!! But I don't use them regularly! But this book would help me to, for sure. There are so many that I would want to do!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  64. all the time, making a strip quilt right now

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love scrap quilts and usually buy fabric in 1/2 yard increments. When I get it home, I wash it, iron it, cut it into two fat quarters, fold one and put it in my stash and then cut 1.25" and 1.5" strips off the other piece before folding that and adding it to its mate. I fine I use the smaller strips in most of my work since I usually make small quilts.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I cut strips from my fabrics in a range of frequently used sizes (1.5", 2", 2.5" and 3.5".)

    ReplyDelete
  67. I use a lot of strings 1.25" to 2.50" and love scrappy quilts. I also use a lot of jelly rolls too.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I collect strings, but they are all different sizes in a big bag, not sorted by strip width. I use them for string quilts (which I love) and this past year made a lot of tiny log cabin blocks with them. It seems like magic to me when I get a quilt from a bag of scraps.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  70. I don't really collect strips, I tend to collect scraps but not full strips. :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. I started making scrap quilts using strips two years ago and now my strips have increased in size by a massive amount. I am a bit anal and have them separated by color. Would love to be inspired to make scrap strips in a way other than the same blocks I have been making over and over. I do have WOF strips because I cut up some of my questionable fabric into various widths and seemed like a good idea at the time?

    ReplyDelete
  72. I have some strips in my collection - love that pattern - now I know what to do with them. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I wouldn’t have guessed there were four blocks in that quilt! I do save strips and try to remember to use them—lol!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I have been saving strips but haven’t started using them yet. I really need this book!

    ReplyDelete
  75. The only strips I have are jelly roll strips. Any other strips leftover from a project end up in the big scrap bin with the odd pieces. Now I think I need to start a bin just for strips! Thanks for the chance!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I love your quilt! I don't rotary cut so I don't have strips, but I do save selvages and I can see a small Selvage Spools in my future.

  88. I follow Bonnie K Hunter's scrap users system by cutting strips of leftover fabric in sizes 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 store in containers for use in scrap quilts and string quilts. Organizers are full and seem to have more than I will need for future quilts. See Bonnie's blog at Quiltville.com for more info.

  89. My first quilt was a strip quilt. A kind stranger overheard me buying expensive quilting tools. She followed me when I left and said "have you bought any fabric"..I replied no. She took my number, called me a week later and asked me to meet at local grocery. Long story short..she filled by car with boxes of beautiful material. I went home went on computer, found instructions for a strip quilt..finished the next day. What a kind lady. I now quilt, and always think of that generous kind quilter in Georgia. Regina Jone

  141. This book looks intriguing! I'm just starting on my string piecing journey, so I would love this additional help/encouragement. Thanks for the chance to win.

  142. I love the quilt you made. After attending a workshop by Diane I did start organizing my scrap strips. not enough to quilt yet but I'm encouraged. I would love a copy of her new book.
