2017 Humble Quilt Swap

My partner should be receiving her quilt soon. She doesn't know that it is me sending to her so I can share it here. I started this when I was in Sunriver, but pieced it differently than the book recommended. The blocks finish at 3". I machine quilted and hand quilted it.

I'm making another one and this person knows we are swapping, but she doesn't know which of these are winging their way to Spain. I love this little quilt, created after seeing an antique.
I'm calling it Child's Play.
Here is Mona's "Quilters Madder" completed! I love it!
This was my latest fall quiltalong which you can find HERE,
And my instagram feed for this week.

Have a lovely weekend friends!
Thank you for all your encouraging words and kind comments.

Quilters Madder Linky Party. Add yours!

Add your Quilters madder! It doesn't need to be quilted.

Look at this great madder I picked up this week! It's by Paula Barnes.
Everyone who adds their link (you can add from instagram now too!) or sends me a photo to add will have their name thrown in the hat to win this little stack of madders from my stash. (Including that new one!)

Quilters Madder Finale

Using the pieces with the same background assemble your block like the photo. This traditional block is called Old Maids Puzzle.
Obviously I wasn't too worried about sharp points! LOL I love this madder fabric!
And this fabric! Make 6 of these blocks.

I laid my blocks out on my design wall and still messed them up! The bottom right 1/2 block got mixed up with the block above it. My pinks are closer together than I would like as well, but it's too late now!
Because mine is quilted and DONE!
I hope you are happy with your Humble Quilts mystery! It is a little bigger than the others I've done, but it just worked and I wasn't up to making up weird sizes.

Here is the inspiration for "Quilters Madder"

Thanks for sewing along! I'll add a linky in about a week or so, so we can see them all!
You can quilt yours any way you'd like. I machine quilted horizontal and vertical in the ditch on each row.
I hand quilted an X in the 3 1/2" squares, handquilted in the ditch next to the large madder triangle and stitched a line diagonally through the 2" patches.

Quilters Madder Part 3

I was trying to avoid you cutting, sewing, cutting,  sewing and have you do all the cutting at once. I've changed the directions to try and clarify them! Updated October 17, 2016
For this step we will be using the half square triangles we made last week.

From each of your 4 hst madder/background fabrics.....

....cut four (4) 2" squares and  lay them out like the photo above to make a cute little bowtie 4 patch.
Do that with all 6 background/madder pairs.

Using the 2 hst background/madders do the same.
You will have 16 of these little bow-tie 4 patches.

Using the background fabric of your 12 hst/bowties cut two (2) 2 3/8" squares. Cut the 2 3/8 squares on the diagonal to make 4 triangles.
Cut (1) 2 3/8" square for your single bowtie/4 patches, then cut it on the diagonal to make 2 triangles.

Add them to your hst, one side at a time, pressing before adding the second triangle as shown in the photo.

 Press toward the background triangles.

For the single bowtie/4patch,

Get your madder and cut a square 3 7/8" then on the diagonal for 2 triangles. (we are only using one)
Lay out your madder triangle as shown and sew.
You should end up with 4 of these.

Cut another matching madder 3 7/8" then cut on the diagonal. You'll be using both of these to make 12 of these blocks. They should measure 3 1/2"

The finale is next Friday and I'll show the antique that inspired this little "Quilters Madder" quilt.

Quilters Madder Part 2

We made it to Friday! Ready for Part 2 of the quiltalong?

Now we are going to make half square triangles. Using 6 different background (the pink now is going to be used as a background) and 6 different madder we will make hst that finish at 1 1/2". I'll show you the method I used, but feel free to use your favorite method. You will need 6 of each. My method makes 8, so you can use the hst in another project or you can make it real scrappy and use them in another block in this quilt.
From your madder and background fabric cut  a 5"x5" square of each and layer them right sides together. Use a hera marker or pencil to mark a line diagonally both ways. If you want you can mark your square into 4 equal squares too.(vertical and horizontal) Sew 1/4" on both sides of  the diagonal lines.  Don't press yet.
Using your ruler and cutter, slice on the pencil/hera marks, making 8 hst.
Ta-da! Press toward the dark color and trim to 2".
I used my pink for 2 layers.

Now you will need 4 more madders and background. I cut mine 2 1/2" x 5". We only need 3 hst, so you'll have one extra.
 Sew as shown.
Slice, press and trim to 2".
Now you should have 6 different madder/shirtings each of 6,  and 3 each of 4 different madder/shirtings.
(48 total!)

Nice work, pat your self on the back! Keep you fabric out cause we'll be cutting more next Friday!

Here's my Instagram feed for the week.
Have an awesome weekend!

Quilters Madder Part 1

This is NOT what we are making, but I saw this quilt last weekend at the show and couldn't resist taking close ups of these awesome madders! Maybe the photos will help you decide on what fabric to use.

Pink and madder seem a weird combination, but it works and was used frequently together. Even if you don't like it, I challenge you to add some pink.

I've shown you a few stacks of fabric for a couple of weeks now. Here they are again. I started pulling anything close to madder, shirtings (my criteria was only black and white/offwhite) and one pink.
The quilt will finish at 24" square.

Start by cutting 16 total madder and pink 3 1/2" squares.  (I did cut 2 pink- not showing in the photo)
 And 16- 3 1/2" shirtings.
We will make some 4 patches

 6 total
And 4- 2 patches.

I know a lot of you are trying to finish up your medallion. I'll give plenty of time until I post Part 2. This will be the first quiltalong I don't have mine made before you all! That's on my list for this weekend!

Here's my instagram feed for the week.

Be back Monday!
