New old Quilt Revisited with Sizes

 

Many of you asked for sizes so you can make this little charmer.

When asking for sizes of orphan blocks there is a reason they were left out of a quilt! lol

The upper left block measures 6.5"x7" across.

The upper right measures 6.5" x7" also.

The lower left measures 7"x7"

The lower left measures 6 3/4"x 7" across.

I guess I would suggest making them all 6" or 7" finished.

I'd love to see yours if you make one!

The lower border finishes at 1 1/2"

The entire quilt with binding measures 14 3/4" across

New Old Little Quilt

Here's a little 4 block quilt that I cannot even remember where I purchased it. I thought it would be a fun little one to finish into a small quilt. 

I showed you close ups of the sweet fabric in an earlier post. 

The one side has the goofy border. Goofy, charming in a humble kind of way!

I was able to use the flour sack I shared the other day. It was perfect! No batting. 

This was in my "antique or vintage" fabric drawer. Someone gave it to me and I'm sorry I do not recall who. I cut it to make the binding. I just love the vibrant blue!

 

Here are the blocks prior to completing. Look at that bottom border! hee-hee I had to do a bit of trimming. 

It doesn't smell too good so I plan on handwashing it. I hope it comes a little cleaner and fresher smelling. (I had to dabble some mint oil on it to work with it!)

A New Old Quilt Project

I'm working on a little "new" project that is a vintage quilt block.

Actually it is 4 little blocks together. 

I used the flour sack I shared the other day as the backing!

It is humble but has some sweet fabric pieces.

Love that cheddar!

I'm doing some simple hand quilting. 

Friday night we went to a local winery for my birthday. This view is killer! They had a local band that plays Beatles. It was a lot of fun.

Then the next morning I was up early and on the road to meet my daughter at a trailhead on the Columbia River. It was forecasted to be about 90 degrees that day so we got an early start. 

Wildflowers are at their peak right now. The main ones are balsom root and lupine. 

Hiking along the rim in a "forest" of flowers and oak trees!

One of the best day hikes I've been on! 

6.4 miles with approx 2000' elevation gain. I took it easy on Sunday!

We stopped for a snack on our way down and my daughter had brought wrapped birthday/mother's day gifts! That was fun and she promised to pack them down too!!

Billie's Guild Box

I stayed in a lovely home with a wonderful host named Billie. She shared a box of vintage and antique blocks, bits and pieces that were donated to the guild. A knowledgeable woman took the box, documented all the blocks and presented a trunk show to the guild. They are going to donate the box of goods back to the woman so can use them for future teaching opportunities.

2020 Antique Block Challenge

Here are the quilts from the challenge I put out last year in Houston and then recently to any reader of Humble Quilts. We started with a vintage block and created from there. 

I'm calling mine Licorice Allsorts, since the pink and black reminded me of that candy.  I shared a sneak peak of the zig zag border. I use this border treatment a lot. It looks more complicated than it is.

Next up:

Kevin the Quilter. He accepted the "humble" part of the challenge. You have to be flexible with vintage blocks! Usually there is a reason they didn't make it in a quilt. LOL  I LOVE everything about this. 

He tried somethign new. He had some beautiful flannel and folded it over- one layer is the batting and one layer is the backing. He loves how flat it is. If you scroll back up at the front, he also folded the back over to the front. Good job Kevin for trying a new technique. That's one thing nice about small quilts- they are great to practice on!

Liz H was inspired by a quilt she saw on Betsy Chutchian's instagram post.

Bright and bold statement! LOVE these fabrics and colors.

Such a darling backing. 

Lois had some vintage blocks form her Grandmother and used them to make this special and beautiful quilt. I love everything about it! Especially the history. 

Mary B had 4 cute but brittle crazy blocks. She worked some real magic here! The little daisies were original to the quilt blocks.

 Betsy L shares this adorable vignette using the double nine patch blocks that she repurposed for the challenge. Super primitive and adorable!

Susan V made this beauty to go with her orphan tree block. WOW! Will be stunning for the holidays. She said she likely won't get it quilted right away, but will still be displayed. (that's a lotta HST in that tree block!)

Virginia made this from 2 Dresden plate orphan blocks. Look at that cute pieced strip in the border!!

Here is another from Virginia. She unsewed, washed and resewd!! Funny how we like to do that!!

Itty Bitty Basket Blocks

My lovely online friend Mary B had these adorable little blocks. These are hers pieced into a top. 

She was generous enough to ask if I'd like 12 to make my own sweet quilt. Thank you Mary!
