Feelin' Good on A Friday

These photos brought me so much joy this week!
Our missionary friends (who we sewed washable pads for ) finally made it back to the Ivory Coast.
2020 was quite the journey for them trying to get home to Oregon to be with a dying parent, trying to maneuver closed borders and such. It was a whirlwind.
But they are "home" and she shared a few photos on facebook that made me smile.

I love the woman with the cloth measuring tape around her neck. That's exactly what I do with mine!
Angelika says they are sewing clothing for their children.

With that I thought I better share a photo of the children!

They are precious in His sight!

Maybe in 1 year I'll be getting ready to go on my mission trip.

Have a joyous weekend!

Mid Week Check In

How's everyone doing? Winter has come to Central Oregon! More snow and very cold temps are the name of the game right now.

I picjked up this lovely lady in Ohio several years ago.

I love everything about her! I had my friend, Kat, send it because there was no way I could check it or carry her on. She was worth it!

I don't get to see my daughter often enough, especially with the covid bs. She is a hairdresser and is being responsible about exposure and she gets the same from her clients. We were able to meet about halfway and go for a snowy hike. I brought the gear, she brought the soup.

Mirror lake on Mt Hood. We tailgated with hot tea and hot soup on returning to my car. It was fun and so good to spend time with her.

The following weekend we had to say goodbye to our dear Porter. He was 14 and such a good dog over all those years! This photo was in a magazine. I remember my hubby laughed at me because I put a photo of me and Porter and not me and my husband! LOL

Elsa is being extra needy, so we are accommodating her. We are all very sad and feel a  big part of our family missing.

The day after we went out to the trails to get some much needed fresh air.

I posted on Facebook and Instagram and feel your love with your kind and caring comments. No need to comment again, but I needed to share it here on my space.

Much love

Machine Applique Class

I feel like Saturday's workshop was a success! Every time I do a Zoom class or workshop I'll get better and better. LOL That's the plan!

Here is Deborah's machine appliqued block. Nice work!

And Mary's completed block. Another beauty!

Thank you ladies who were able to make it and support me by taking this online workshop.

I already have an idea to make it better!

Have a terrific week!

Wednesday Tidbits

For those of you who inquired about the quilt I am working on, here it is.

If you do not have this book, Jan reprinted the pattern and it is available on her website HERE.

As I look forward to completing the applique on the final border I also start considering my backing.

This is my preliminary sketch of my backing. I do plan on having this machine quilted so am adding 8" to both sides to accommodate.  As you can see this is inaccurate but gives me a visual of what I'll need to do.
This is a bit more accurate. I try not to put a seam down the center of the backing. I want to keep this one primitive with homespuns on the back.

Which brought me HERE.  I made some shop samples for Doni in the past and know she has a wide variety of primitive style fabric. What I didn't know was that I'd find them for $3 yard!
Check it out HERE

So, I've got an order in for a couple of different homespuns. Looks like I'll have to piece this backing since I couldn't find any 108" wide backing that I thought was suitable for this quilt.
Now I need to contact one of my quilters and see what kind of wait list I'll be on.
I think I'm done with super large quilts for awhile!
Buhl Bushong, Cherry Tree and this one and all huge!

I'm getting ready for my applique workshop this weekend. It isn't too late to join! 9-12 on Saturday morning pacific time. Get details HERE

Was able to get outside and enjoy the beautiful winter sunshiney days!
I'm so glad Michelle suggested meeting for a hike!
It was so good for my mental and physical well being.

Anniversary Quilt

I got my second border appliqued and attached! Woot!Woot!
It is going to be another ginormous quilt!
The left border is what I got completed this weekend,
I added to the lower corner after attaching the border and will still need to applique the stem and the woman.

 One more border to go!

Let's have an amazing week!

Sally Post Quilt

Good Morning! My office desk is covered in 1099's, W2's, and all other assortment of end of the year paperwork that I must get completed. The joys of owning your own business!  Many people pay an accountant to do this, but was encouraged during the 1980's recession to complete them myself and I've continued that until this day.
With that said, I've done no new sewing since my Wednesday post and thought I'd share photos of my Sally Post quilt which I just took better photos of.

This is another one that Gay at Sentimental Stitches patterned. The original maker had 3 rows facing out and I love that about this quilt! Check out the original HERE signed and dated by Sally Post in 1854.

The amazing quilting was done by my long time friend and machine quilter, Kathy McCarty. She's located in Ohio and if you are looking for a quilter, let me know and I'll send you her email.

Here's my Instagram for the past several days.

I had a wonderful Zoom lecture with the Northwest Quilters this week. They asked some great questions and now that we are online it's not as easy to turn to the quilt and answer those questions. I'll be adding to my notes! If your guild is looking for a lecture or workshop it is likely I'm available! I'd love it if you'd consider me for your guild. It looks like we'll be online for a few more months at least.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Anniversary Quilt Update

I've had a hard time focusing this past week. Just to focus on one thing has been hard!
I had an online guild meeting Monday and I'm prepping for an applique class, so bouncing from one thing to the next.

I finally made it into my sewing room for a little bit this week,

I added this rooster to the border I had completed, but had a big empty space that needed something. I think it turned out cute.

And got started on the next border, pig, basket, flower complete!

I challenged my friend to a minimum of 20 minutes of activity every day the month of January. I squeaked out a chilly walk at Smith Rock. This is a popular rock climbing area but I have to admit I've never seen anyone on this set of rocks! Look way in the center at the top!! That is a person!

I hope you are having a terrific week!
Much love and peace...

String Theory

Since we've worked on string quilts these last couple of years I thought I'd share this quilt show that you can see at Iowa Quilt Museum or HERE at this link! Such a great exhibit of quilts!

Readers Show and Tell

Janny shared with me her finished quilt "Abundance" that was a Humble Quilts quiltalong in 2013. I can see the quilted fans and love it!

I shared this quilt recently as it was part of the sapphire special exhibit in Houston. It is just a basic 25 patch block on point. A friend and I made this to commemorate our trip to Paducah Quilt Show.

Mona was inspired to make her own using the grunge line.

So pretty!

And Gay @ Sentimental Stitches is at it again. 2 more blocks are available HERE for this amazing quilt she is calling Polly's Polka Dot.

Thank you for all your wonderful comments on my newest quilt! Many of you were "no-reply" commenters so I have no way to respond to you. Just know I appreciate every single comment.

Well, The first week of the new year has not been a good one in general. Let's hope it can only get better from here. Much love always.

Beyond the Cherry Tree 2021

Boom! I cannot believe this quilt is complete!
I was finishing the last direction of cross hatch in the border, then there was no lines left to quilt! It was rather anticlimactic as I turned to my hubby and said, wow, it's done! LOL
Like the original quilt (that Gay Bomers purchased and reproduced) I opted to quilt the motifs throughout the quilt.
I have not washed this yet, so some of my hera marker lines are still visible.
And if you'd like to know, yes, I will be washing it before using it.
It was 10 years in the making (mostly the quilting)  so it will need to be cleaned.
This is the quilt I shared in Monday's video about starting to machine applique after the block with 57 leaves. It is actually pretty hard to tell which blocks are done by machine and which are done by hand.

This one is done by hand. Gee, you'd think if I did all these berries that 57 leaves would be a piece of cake! LOL

8 blocks are appliqued by hand, along with all of the vines, including the border, and 17 blocks are raw edge machine appliqued. (I'm teaching a class on January 23rd! Email me for more info)

I opted for a 108" backing on this one. I love turning over the back of an antique quilt and seeing a print.
It's a neat one by Marcus Brothers.

I opted to make my binding a bit narrower than usual. It is double fold cut 2" wide.
And a simple label.

This quilt measures approx 98" square and the original  was made circa 1850-1860. Patterns are still available at Sentimental Stitches website HERE.
I heard this morning she has the patterns on sale!

Gay's patterns are very well done and I would recommend her patterns without reservation.

Thanks for spurring me on for so many years! I'm so thrilled!
