Steppin Out Recapped

We had a great time on the first Humble Quilts Zoom class! The teacher (me!) was the only one that had to use the seam ripper! lol

Jean's quilt
Christy's
Sharon's

HERE is a link to Katy's 2 quilts!

Karen and Wendy were unable to attend the day of the Zoom class but watched it later on video. I would LOVE to see your quilts as well!

2 things:

  •  I didn't think the recorded version was very good. I used the icloud storage that comes with the paid Zoom account. So I apologize to those who watched the recording. Does anyone have any ideas to improve the quality of a recording?
  • I plan on doing a second class using American Patchwork and Quilting magazine basket pattern. You will need to have the magazine if you want to make a quilt from it.   I'd also love to spend some time chatting about how to get a pattern you have designed into a magazine. I'm not an expert but I may get one to help us out on the next class! The date will be determined later this month.
I'm off to New England this week! Stay tuned!

Humble Quilts Class or Workshop?

Since I'm training for a half marathon I've had lots of time to let my mind wonder about Humble Quilts and what I want 2022 to look like.
I want to ask you all what you think about a short class once a month. We could do a small quilt project, learn about antique quilts or reproduction fabric. I think the possibilities are endless.  Please watch the short video and let me know what you think!

Leave me a comment or send me an email at HumbleQuilts@gmail.com for any ideas!

Thank you so much!

Friday Frolic!

A friend sent me a box of precious blocks! These are just a handful of terrific fabric with madder. All of the blocks are pretty crispy. Any thoughts about washing? Or just piece them together as is? I didn't iron them but they look pretty accurate despite my photo!

I'm continuing lectures that had to be rescheduled from last year.

It isn't as good as real life, but it is so nice that it is possible to stay connected to quilters!

This is what we call false spring. Just a tease. The hill we were climbing was steep!

It is so nice I can get away during the week on my son's day off.

Have a lovely weekend dear friends!!

Wednesday Wonderings

Janny sent me a photo of her completed string quilt. She was inspired by THIS blog post and quilt that I started in a Gwen Marston class. So wonderful Janny!
If my quilts have inspired you to make a quilt I'd love if you would share that! That really keeps me motivated to blog and quilt!

Here's a little different string quilt from my friend Susan I love everything about this!! Here was her thought process:

I thought I would show you my first string quilt.
It is called Three.
Three because it is composed of three ideas that never happened.
The center was a log cabin idea I never went further with.
The strings have been in a drawer for 25 years, never used.
The squares were in a shoe box, used for one project but they multiply like bunnies in that box. Not sure how that happens.
It is wonky because I just sewed, didn’t care if it was straight.
I started it as a clean up the quilt room during Covid project, use it or lose it. I stubbornly decided that since the strings have been in my quilt room for 25 years I was going to use it!

It is as charming as ever, Susan! Thank you for sharing!!

If you want to make a string quilt and try out a class on Zoom, the Columbia River Quilters Guild is hosting my "String Quilts Your Way" workshop from 1PM-5PM on February 20th.(pacific time) If you have not done a Zoom class and are hesitant or worried, I'd be more that happy to meet with you ahead of time and help you feel more confident! Find the link HERE to sign up.
We've got a cold weather snow advisory coming in! Looks like we may get snowed into our quilt retreat this weekend! I told the ladies last night we better bring warm imbibes!! LOL It likely won't improve our sewing!!
Have a fantastic day!

Machine Applique Class

I feel like Saturday's workshop was a success! Every time I do a Zoom class or workshop I'll get better and better. LOL That's the plan!

Here is Deborah's machine appliqued block. Nice work!

And Mary's completed block. Another beauty!

Thank you ladies who were able to make it and support me by taking this online workshop.

I already have an idea to make it better!

Have a terrific week!

Monday ♪♪ Monday Machine Applique Class

Here we go! 2021 is here and it is up to each one of us to make it a great year! Attitude is everything!

I'm going to start with a video on machine applique. I have several quilts I've hand appliqued, but most of mine now are done by machine. I just do not have enough time to do as much hand work as I'd like.

Check out the You Tube video! Click on the photo above or go directly HERE.

Here is one block on an entire reproduction quilt that I machine appliqued.

I've scheduled a 3 hour class on Saturday, January 23 using the Zoom platform. I'd love to have you join! Check out the details HERE

I'm very close to having my first quilt of the year complete! Whoop! Whoop!
Have an amazing week!

Fun on A Friday!

Happy Friday Friends!

Here's a sneak peak at a vintage quilt purchase! Oh my goodness, it is darling as can be! Who doesn't love polka dots??!! More to come.

Here's my instagram from the last several weeks.

A couple things:

I'm in charge of the Angel Tree program this year and we had a whopping 62 kids. In ONE Sunday, with less people attending (more watching from home these days) and a few texts on Monday all names were spoken for. With our "freeze" the next 2 weeks our church will not be meeting, so I am thrilled as ever!

We are still planning on sharing our antique quilt challenge quilt on Wednesday. If you want to send me a photo I'll post it on my blog. If you want to know what that's about click HERE

My in person quilt guild meeting is on FREEZE as well! So don't show up, because nobody will be there. I'll be getting my second lecture organized to Zoom this coming week.
Karen asked why is Zoom necessary. Here's a short update on my Zoom experience.

I've attended lectures with hundreds of participants. You can only hear the speaker and usually they have a slide show to present that they are narrating. There is a chat box to use if you have a question.

I used Zoom to do my "String Quilts your Way" workshop. It was a small class but I was able to use 2 cameras, one on me while speaking, and one facing down on the table. I could toggle between both cameras easily.

When I present for a guild, I'll be a co-host and the participants will also be muted (the host will have controls for that) and I'll be able to share my slide show and speak while it is going. The Host can monitor for questions.

It isn't ideal, but it is a great alternative during these days and likely months to come. If you plan on attending a Zoom meeting for the best possible experience download Zoom to your desktop computer, ipad, or phone! You can even do a test meeting so you can figure out the controls. Go HERE for more info.

I hope that more of you will look at this alternative to in person gatherings if your area isn't allowing them.

If your guild needs speakers, I'm filling up my 2021 schedule right now! Check out my lectures and workshops HERE

Have an amazing weekend!

Sparkling Star

Last week I string pieced some diamonds to test a block for the String Class I taught online on Saturday.  I'll interject here, I had a really fun time and I think the participants did too.
So, when class was over I finished this star. I'm going to lose a few outside points but I can live with that.
I'm considering making this the center of a medallion quilt.
I forgot how fiddly it was to assemble a LeMoyne star!
The dogs are usually in the living room, but because I was set up in the kitchen, they wanted to be nearby. I accommodated them!!

On another note, I thought the Zoom workshop went very well. I'd love to know if you've done a class, what you liked, what you didn't like. Would you be interested in taking a class with me? What subject matter would you like to learn? It was mentioned maybe a machine applique class. Would that interest you?

I'm going to make it a great week, how about you?
Much love

Technical Difficulties

One positive thing, my son came over and helped me set up my 2 camera system set up so I can do workshops through Zoom. Because one is a new class for 2020 I had not been able to do it live before covid hit. Would any of you be interested in paying for a class for me to work a few bugs out? If I have enough interest I'll get it set up.

This is the class:

New for 2020!
String Quilts Your Way!
String quilts have been made since 1860. Most were foundation pieced for stability and ease of sewing. If you've ever wanted to make a string quilt but didn't know where to start, this class is for you. Each quilt will be unique as you will decide which quilt block or setting to use. A fun and informative class!

EMAILS:

On a lousy technical note, my computer updated and I am no longer receiving my email to my inbox! The last day I got it was 10/14. It looks like my messages are downloading but I have no idea where they are going. I've tried searching my entire computer and am at a loss.

The "lost" emails are your comments that you leave on my blog. I'm getting them on my phone, and I've started saving them to my server. It seems to be complicated. Please forgive me for not responding! I'm waiting for my son to come again and see if he can help me.

On a fun note: Every year Aurora has a contest for Halloween. I snapped a couple of photos of my favorite scarecrows!

We have snow predicted and temps below 20! Brrr....

Take care.
