Cousin's Walk Bird Sampler Complete!!

I started this sampler in 2019 and completed it this week!

It is huge (102"x116") and brought the stand and quilt to our empty store so I could photograph it. I struggled with the lighting but hope you can click on to enlarge. 

Sharon Tucker, Grass Roots Quilting,  did the machine quilting on it. We had numerous conversations and photos back and forth and she executed perfectly what I wanted!!

I changed the inner block to the compass. It is nice to have your quilt a little different than everyone else's. 

I machine appliqued. 

I am done with huge projects!

Here is the beautiful antique circa 1850

I snapped this photo at Mary Koval's booth when it was for sale. 

Feels great to have that one completed.

This and That on A Monday

I got my borders added and my corners complete!

I did mess up my corner length but oh well..... Fixed it and once it is quilted it shouldn't be too noticeable.

Am waiting for 10 yards of backing! This is the largest quilt I've ever made. (And ever want to make!) 

My first choice was short so I had to look real quick and make a second choice. My first choice was a cheddar print backing. My second choice is a little sand colored background with a red print.  I hope I like it!

My first blog post about the cousins walk quilt was August 2019! By the time I get it done it will be 5 years. Great quilts cannot be rushed is what I say!

Look! Blue sky and sunshine! 

Elsa and I took advantage of it while we could. It was cold but so pretty.

My adult children are enjoying a week at Disneyworld! I love that they are making so many fun memories together.

Cousin's Walk Borders

The photo below is the original quilt. 

Here is the pattern and the border corners. 

I cut 2 of mine too short! Aargh!

Frustrating but not really a big deal.

I have 2 borders attached

And 2 ready to sew. I may need another retreat to get them finished!

Cousin's Walk Folk Art Bird Sampler

I'm not sure I've made ANY progress on this quilt since last February! 

I'll be at a quilt retreat in January and this is my focus!

Must get these borders appliqued!

Cousin's Walk Bird Sampler

I thought I better move forward with the applique border of the Cousin's Walk bird sampler. 

It is big!

I oversized the triangles, so needed to trim first. 

It certainly will not look like the original quilt, but I guess that is what will make it uniquely mine. It seems I ended up with extra flowers, leaves and buds. 

 

As a reminder here is my center. 

Here is the antique. 

I need to start stitching the top and bottom borders. I am machine appliqueing. 

I'm off to Las Vegas!

The kids (hahaha adult kids) and I are running the Rock N Roll series!

Cory is our spectator and cheerleader!

Saturday night starting and ending on Freemont street Rene and I are running a 5K. 

Sunday night the strip streets will be closed and Rene is running the 10K (covid took some training time away boo-hoo) and Ken and I are running the half marathon. It should be fun!

My last half marathon was in September 2018. I'm doing it as a way to usher in my 60th birth-year. I'll have fun, take photos and celebrate!

Time For Some Borders

I sort of wish this quilt wasn't so large! Time to start working on some borders, since I said that was my "winter" project. March 20 is the last day of winter so I'll be cutting it close!

This is the green I'm using for the vines. 

Elsa knows how to soak up the sun even if it isn't super warm.

Some friends and I went on an almost full moon hike on a clear evening. Oh my gosh, it was wonderful! Here we are on a frozen lake.

We've had some lovely sunsets. 

 When I'm not out hiking, I'm taking classes about hiking and hiking safely!

Here is a reminder of the quilt and the lovely border.

Here is what I have completed. 

The border is my "winter" project. We've had a couple of evenings in the 30's so it feels like winter will be here before I know it! (boo-hoo!)

Cousins Walk Bird Sampler

TaDA! I got the center of the Cousin's Walk sample together!

Because of the bird direction I was challenged! LOL But I htink I did it as the original antique quilt. 

I did contemplate setting it so all the birds were facing one direction, but I do enjoy the quirkiness of them being a bit different. 

Here is the antique and as you can see I have quite a bit more to do!

Fun on a Friday!

Here is my friend Laurie's Cousins Walk bird sampler completed! I have to say I'm struggling with the amount of muslin, but with it quilted it looks lovely.

She had it hand quilted and used silk batting.

 I've never used silk. She loves the way it drapes. Do any of you have thoughts on silk batting?

I'm hoping to start getting my center together next week than I'll have the borders to applique. 

I met a friend to go hiking last Sunday. 

How beautiful is this view? Wow! That is Mt Hood and Laurence Lake.

Cousins Walk Bird Sampler

Looking forward to getting this center laid out and sewn together! I'm laying them out so I can see them all easily. The antique is set in a fun and folksy way. 

 It is likely I'll go with the antique setting. 

Here's a shy bird that I had been trying to get a photo of the entire week while in Hawaii. There was 2 of them hanging around together, but cropped this up close to see him/her better. It is called a saffron finch.

And, why did the chickens cross the road???? LOL 

Susanne sent me these wonderful buttons from Germany! She was my swap partner and sent them as a thank you. Thank you Susanne!

The ones on the left are made from thread and all handmade! So precious! They are all antique!

I love them and will add them to a project I will treasure!!! 

It has been a difficult week. Covid is definitely hitting our community and it's hard to see family's hurting. Our county has not made it easy to get the covid vaccine either and that is frustrating. 

Well, I'm hoping to get my sewing room cleaned up this weekend and Bernina Record hooked up and sewing soon!
