Great Plains Quilt AKA Spencer Museum Quilt

The Spencer Museum Quilt is done!

I'm actually calling it the Great Plains Quilt since the blocks are from old quilts documented in Kansas.

It was really nice to bring a little spring indoors. 

I love the little feathers she added.

Not Spencer Museum Quilt Month 4 Finale

I decided to go with the non traditional blue stars and cornerstones.

This was a fun quilt but glad I didn't make any more of these huge blocks.

Not Spencer Museum Quilt Month 3

 Here is my 4th and final block of this quilt, which I found out has nothing to do with the Spencer Museum! LOL 

I had to play around a little bit, although June will be my assembly month.

Gold?

Blue?

It was a fun quilt to make. If anyone has suggestions for a name, I'm open to hear your thoughts!

Now, non quilty  blog news.

2 Christmases ago our employees got a gift certificate for the Cowboy Dinner Tree, dinner and overnight stay in a cabin.  (click to read more! So fun!!) We had no idea it was as busy as it is, so just got in this past weekend!

It was seriously rustic and in the middle of basically NOWHERE!

It was fairly high elevation and a bit chilly- Porter was really enjoying the pellet stove. 

We hiked a bit on the way there on Saturday, but were only a few miles from a trailhead to a lookout. Porter is 12 or 13 and has had 2 leg surgeries so we limit the amount of miles. 

We didn't go all the way to the lookout, but it was such a nice morning for a hike.

That's a bit of fresh snow that fell overnight. 

My public service announcement is to be safe if you are even day hiking! Be prepared for any event. 

Two years ago on the Columbia Gorge someone started a fire that spread quickly. A one mile hike for some in flip flops and bathing suits turned into an overnight 17 miles hike out a different path. Thankfully some people were prepared to share with others. I never go hiking without my 10 essentials now. Mine all fits in a small bag. (except the water)

Pattern Conundrum?

It may not be a conundrum at all, but in my head it is a little bit. 

co·nun·drum: a confusing and difficult problem or question.

While admiring Dorothy Ramage's  Spencer Museum block, Carolyn Stewart Weaver mentioned this book that had the same pattern in it. Of course that peaked my interest and I'm a huge fan of red and green quilts, so I ordered up a copy. 

Its a terrific book highlighting 10 quilts that were documented in the Kansas Quilt project.

So in 2006 this book was published. 

This block is exactly like Jan Patek's Spencer museum quilt.

That little wreath? That is nearly like the one we are making this month, but ours has a star in the center. 

We've made this basket too. I LOVE that each block in this quilt is not exact.

Hmmm, look at this one.  It says it is owned by Terry Clothier Thompson.

Here is the Spencer Museum Quilt "designed" by Jan Patek, and published in 2009. 

Maybe they are all friends, I don't know. I just found it extremely fascinating and curious. None of the quilts, as of 2006, were in the Spencer Museum.  It brings up more questions. 

I don't mean to imply anything, just curious.

Spencer Museum Quilt month 3

Here is my 3rd block of the Spencer Museum quilt designed by Jan Patek.

I tried to add a bit of green, but really didn't like it.

Here are my three blocks. Unfortunately it was getting late and the light in my sewing room was not good. Let's do the final block next month, then quilt assembly the following month.

Spencer Museum Quilt Month 2

I think last month I neglected to say which block we were doing, but as long as you are making progress it really doesn't matter. 

 I did the basket. I'm trying to bring in a little blue in each block.

Upcoming on Humble Quilts

Wow, I started to get sick at the coast on Saturday, drank lots of fluids and warded it off until Sunday night. Monday I stayed in bed all day, until I went to Urgent Care. Yesterday was better after 24 hours of antibiotics, but still rested and took it easy. I really wanted to sew, but didn't even have energy for that.
So, here's my post for the day:

Spencer Museum Quilt

We are experiencing a crazy snow storm. It feels so late in the season. We are trying to make the best of it.

Spencer Museum Quilt

I mentioned a while back that I was going to work on this quilt this year and several of you wanted to join in!! YAY! 

Here is Jan Patek's version using her fabric. As you can see there is 4 designs, she made 3 of each one. ZZZZ that doesn't usually float my boat, so I'll make one of each since these are 20" blocks and can stretch it to make it a tad larger. 

I found this lovely French General fabric in Texas and thought I would use it for the border. 

I'm going to use my homespuns for the applique background. 

Here are the four blocks. I propose we start with the Upper left Whig Rose block. We will check back in on our progress the end of February. 

In one week we will have our first Stringalong linky party!!
